I mean if you think about it, the default of humanity is to die of thirst assuming we were to do nothing so ‘earning a living’ is just a realistic expectation for any society.
If able, you should provide enough to society to make it worth meeting your basic needs. They give you food, water, shelter, you give them back enough to compensate them for that effort.
At its root, this is what cash should be, a measure of what society owes you. You make other people’s lives X much better, and they do the same for you.
We should really be trying harder to get cash to meet this goal. A person making 60k a year for 45 years is $2.7 million dollars. You can buy a person’s lifetime of effort for $2.7 million.
Bill Gates is worth $131 billion. That’s the lifetime effort of 48,500 people. He hasn’t improved our lives that much. Something is clearly out of sorts. There’s nothing one person can do to deserve the lifetime effort of a thousand people.
It doesn’t matter. One person can’t put forth 48k lifetimes worth of effort, and they don’t deserve that much in return.
I promise the dude hasn’t worked harder than the combined efforts of 48 thousand people.
We can reward talent, and we can reward effort. But no combination of those two is as ridiculous as our reward structure. Our reward structure is flawed because people with money make the rules, and their primary rule is that people with money should have more money.
What you are saying is true, but there is not a better option for how the economy works that doesnt end really bad. I dont like bill gates, but the idea that he cant have what he has doesnt end well.
The federal tax receipts/gdp were pretty much the same as they are right now in the 50s and 60s. Just because the tax rate was high doesnt mean people pay that much.
Yeah, what a shame it was that people had to invest in the longevity and reputation of their business in order to keep paying them out over a hundred years.
To answer this question seriously, Bill Gates has held back computing by stealing other people’s work and ideas and using Embrace Extend and Extinguish.
If Bill Gates had no existed, arguably open source computing and hardware would be even more advanced than what we have now. Windows has been a net detriment to society.
I don’t think that’s a realistic position to take though. If not Bill Gates it would have been someone else trying to capitalize, not a de facto FOSS utopia.
I said this on Reddit and they agreed that you don’t deserve to be alive if you’re not working, it’s really a disease of the mind to believe this shit.
I could see why tho. What happens today is not the same as this ideal probably. You could argue that if your a fit, 20s, healthy, etc. and you just sit home all day, your kinda a waste, but then again siting somewhere else 9-5 is also a waste so.
Eh, I can see why would someone think that. There are things that I disagree with more.
I mean it does make sense if you keep in mind that we traded having to hunt and forage for a system that let’s you buy these things indirectly with currency.
You just need to leave out the whole thing of empathy and morality and reduce the whole system to a exchange of goods and services for money.
It’s more like you haven’t earned the right for other people to do the work of keeping you alive.
Human life requires work to sustain. Someone has to do that work. The most fair system is one in which that responsibility falls on the person benefitting from it.
ie, to be alive, you must contribute work. Because your life requires work to maintain.
I’m so torn on this meme because on the one hand I have the same gut reaction of “yeah, but youll die if you don’t do jack shit in the woods, you kind of have to be useful to live”.
But then I think about our society … the billions of dollars going to rich people who do nothing, the millions of people who work in jobs that are useless, or the millions who work jobs that actively harm society, and in that context, the amount and type of work does seem like bullshit. It’s not like going into your marketing firm 5/7 days of your life means a farmer gets to work less. People like to comfort themselves with vain thoughts like ‘we all just gotta do our partfor the system to work’, but that’s objectively not true. Lots of parts of our system are objectively bullshit and are excised completely through new laws and legislation and society keeps working fine, in some cases much better.
There is a difference between believing everyone owes a debt to the society and civilization you participate in to support those who cannot support themselves, and not deserving to live if you didn’t fit into the rigid hierarchy structures we’ve built for work. But often these sentiments get mixed together.
I don’t think they do. In our society we don’t really let people die just because they don’t fit in. When there’s someone who can’t take care of their self, we take care of them.
Where are you talking about and comparing to what? Cause I see a lot of people dying in the streets because of mental illness or drug addiction when I take the subway to work. We don’t throw them away like ancient Sparta but we definitely don’t come close to providing the services they need to the things they need to begin to get off the street. Cause the solution now is put the homeless in prison and that’s going just fine right? …Right?
As a selfish conservative you should already know that they are the exact ones who want to steal every single security net from every citizen whilst simultaneously enabling corporations to destroy unions and create monopolies.
I mean c’mon, you have to know this. It’s the core tenet of the traitor supporting party. Thieving, stealing, cheating, and lying are all that the magat traitors have to offer.
I live in reality, and I myself have been given free resources when I’ve been unable to work.
In my country, I have never seen a hungry person who could not obtain food due to lack of fitting in or having money or any requirement other than “oh that person has a stomach and needs food, so let’s feed them”.
That is the reality I see all around me. If you want to call that a “fairy tale”, I challenge you to provide evidence of a person being treated in the way you’re describing. Anywhere other than say a concentration camp or japanese pow camp.
What part of our society is letting people die because they don’t fit in? This is a serious question, because everybody seems to believe what I’m saying is a fairy tale, and yet I see it happening all around me.
How, exactly, are you getting the impression out society is one that doesn’t value the life of people who don’t fit in?
This meme is mainly talking about workers who are worked to death to “earn a living”. Capitalists who leech off of workers do not deserve to be alive.
Of course, that’s not the case for those who are physically unable to work to the same extent as others. Basically, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.”
We have more than enough resources for everyone, so long as the working class can control the means of production instead of the capitalists who try to hoard all the wealth.
“Earning a living” doesn’t state that people should die if the choose to be a grifter or a thief or some other dishonest person that takes from others and doesn’t contribute to society. It just means those people didn’t earn their living.
In a functional society everyone should contribute to better the society. “Earning a living” is a statement of pride in contributing to society value equal to or greater than the value you get from it. If someone is making a living through dishonest means so isn’t earning a living, it can be something they should be ashamed of
Note that socialist societies have similar expressions like “from each according to their ability to each according to their need”. The intent is the same, encourage people to contribute to society. What if I don’t contribute according to my ability and just want to take what I need? Does that statement imply I’ll be sent to a gulag if I don’t contribute according to my ability? OMG socialism says I don’t deserve to live!!!
This isn’t helping. 90% of people’s bosses are also being exploited. It’s the millionaires and billionaires who are the problem. Very few of which actually work. They’re just shareholders with generational wealth.
Stop trying to get people to hate others who are part of the same exploited working class just because they’re slightly less poor.
This OP just has really bad takes sometimes. Like 30 percent of their posts are like this. I can’t tell if they’re a tankie or just so angry that they post anything no matter how out of touch it is.
There’s nothing here about hating others. The meme is talking about how the boss appropriates the value the worker produces under capitalism. The meme is criticizing the system of capitalist relations that produces millionaires and billionaires. These people don’t just magically appear out of thin air. They’re a product of the system. Educate yourself FFS.
Maybe you’re unable to read then. This meme says your boss is stealing from you. Most people really hate being stolen from. The manager at McDonald’s making 50k a year is not stealing from the cashier making 45k. You’re pitting the working class against each other and it’s not helping. You’re completely out of touch
That’s literally what’s happening, the boss appropriates the value that your labor produces, and then pays you a small portion of that in form of wages. Hope that helps clear things up for you.
Yes I understand Marxist theory. But quoting things written down almost a hundred years ago in a meme without context is like saying that homosexuality is wrong because it’s in the Old Testament of the Bible. It doesn’t make sense to most of the people reading the meme and it doesn’t help the situation. It just pits the working class against each other and makes progressivism look extreme when it’s not. Unless of course, you’re only doing this to feel superior to people by quoting Marx at them and then saying things like, “educate yourself FFS” so that you can feel like you’re better than others. Hopefully that’s not the case because you sound completely out of touch.
The whole point of memes is to kick off discussion. Meanwhile, not sure how pointing out that bosses appropriate salary of the workers pits the workers against each other in your mind. You’re making a really poor argument here and you just keep doubling down on it. You sound like you just like to argue for the sake of arguing to be honest. Seems like the only one who’s commenting to feel superior to people here is you.
Ok you’re the boss. Everything that Marx wrote still applies literally and managers and bosses don’t contribute anything to production. Good thing your meme has kicked off such great discussion about how cashiers should see their managers as thieves.
Not sure what kind of privileged life you lead where you can just post memes all day but some of us have to actually live in this capitalist hellscape. We need the entire working class to rise up, not fight amongst each other because the “boss” who’s making an extra 50 cents an hour is appropriating everyone’s salary. You’re out of touch.
This is absolutely hilarious. First you complain the meme is too simplistic, then when explained the context you complain that people are talking down to you. Nowhere have you provided any actual critique of what Marx says, or why you claim it doesn’t apply today.
I’m again confused how pointing out that workers need to organize against capital owners is making us fight against each other. It seems that you’re very confused and angry person who might want to go outside and touch some grass.
Absolutely vicious straw man there. Great job boss. This meme does not do any of the things you claim it does and I’ve absolutely demonstrated what you just said I didn’t. You’re obtuse and completely out of touch.
I’m upset that this meme helps the ruling class by pitting the working class against each other. That’s it. Your meme does not say, “capital owners”, it says, “boss”. This is why I’m still questioning your reading comprehension because I’ve now explained this multiple times.
Anyways. Enjoy your day of posting memes that help the elites that wouldn’t exist if the working class wasn’t constantly fighting amongst ourselves. I’ve got to go organize with my coworkers, including my “boss”, who are all part of the labor class getting screwed by the elites that you are enabling.
I think the McDonald’s manager is a bit of a straw man here, insomuch as it is an edge case. It’s a class traitor job, much like being a cop is. Both are wage slaves tasked with disciplining other wage slaves.
Edit to add: Employers—from owners all the way down to McDonald’s managers—and cops & prison guards can’t join the IWW, but anyone else can: www.iww.org/membership/
I dunno man. Even in a utopia where we control all the means of production you still need someone to schedule work hours and order ingredients and stuff. They should be beholden to the rest of the team just like anyone in any position so I see what you’re saying. However, comparing them to cops is a little extreme. These “bosses” need to be in agreement with the rest of the labor class and calling them thieves is unhelpful when the real enemy are the shareholders. Let’s start with taking down the actual ruling class before pitting workers against other workers just because some of them have been elevated to minor positions of power by a corrupt system. Of course there are bad bosses who buy in too much but I’ve had plenty that actually care and are just as exploited even if they make 5 or 10 percent more slave wage.
All I’m saying is that this meme is hurting class solidarity and if it actually said “capital owners” and not “your boss” then the 90% of people who aren’t experts on Marxist theory might understand. As it is, I feel like most people would just read this and think, “well then my boss is a thief and I hate them for that”, which doesn’t help.
“Dopamine Detox” and “NoFap” guys are trying to get you frustrated so you’re easier to radicalize. This is a long and storied fascist recruitment tactic. The worse you feel the more likely you are to find community within their circles, and that’s when they get you.
Buy some supplements that contain Vitamin D and Iron. Most people are deficient and it affects their mood. I got some meal replacements that basically contain everything and it’s kept me in good spirits while everything is going to shit. I should be depressed, but I’m not.
EDIT: Iodine too. The over-the-counter stuff is called “kelp” and the reason they don’t put it in multivitamins is because it metabolizes into a substance that in excess will give you gout. Iodine is hard to get from your diet so having supplements every now and then is important.
No worries about the iodine, we always buy iodized salt and consume fish once or twice a week. However, I do think that I may some sort of calcium deficiency. I’m going to look into L-Tyrosine and Vitamin D. Currently, I’ve been taking Omega-3 capsules, but I don’t consume it regularly. And most probably, I’ll need a little bit of sunlight too.
Tyrosine. It’s a dopamine precursor. By itself, it mildly increases focus just enough to get non-preferred tasks started. It also makes completing tasks much more rewarding, which can start a positive feedback loop that leaves your space much more livable/less depressing.
There’s so many different variants (Amazon India), some of them are really cheap and some are really expensive, how do I pick one? While searching about this particular amino acid, I also came across something called a nootropic stack, do I have to be careful about how much capsule/tablet I should be consuming? Should I also be pairing it with some other tablet? Right now, I have a few omega-3 capsules which I do not consume regularly because it makes me gag. Should I stop with it?
Supplements suck that way, sorry. I’ve found a couple brands that work for me (Nature’s Way, Horbäach), but I’m no supplement expert. I’d try to find a mid-price option that didn’t seem too sketchy.
As for nootropic stacks and whatnot: never heard of them, although they seem interesting. I personally take 2g of tyrosine along with vitamin D and a vitamin B complex (plus a couple medical rx). I would start at 500mg-1g, and add more after a week if you felt you needed to. I have taken tyrosine with omega 3s but never regularly; I didn’t notice an interaction at the time.
I’m the product of two failures with histories of depression, so I just feel like every ounce of joy costs a pound of numbness. No exploitation or too much joy needed.
I feel ya. My parents literally met at an Alcoholic’s Anonymous meeting, and they both continued to use and drink long after that too.
That said, eh, fuck paying for joy. Steal that shit like its a grape at a grocery store. Just make sure you’re not stealing from people in the same boat, cause thats just stealing from yourself in the end too.
It’s an American dish and the Americans who are credited with creating and trademarking the name are the ones who named it a “dutch baby.” There’s speculation it’s because they meant to say Deutsch to make it extra ridiculous but a lot of our foods in the US have names that are evocative of other countries.
By Boss it should say Corporation, or Large Corporate Boss. Because many bosses at companies are earning same as you and got more responsibility dumped on them.
I’m lucky I guess our company owner leads by example and believes in open financial statements. We all see what the company makes, what the expenses and labour are, and how much profit has been generated
I own a small contracting company, I’m working twice as much as any of my guys and don’t really make much more than them for hours in/money out. I am in the field with them all for all 40 hours they are as well as weekends, plus all the admin stuff at night. They also make good money hourly as well as cash bonuses
