@blaue_Fledermaus@mstdn.io avatar

The USian system is so bizarre.

Here in Brazil everybody HAS to register when turning 18. The registration can get suspended if you miss an election without justification, but you get a fine for each time.

Voting is not a right, it's a duty.

ByteOnBikes OP ,

Absolutely!

It’s in the core fabric of the American system. Yet some conspiracy theory has made voting and the right to vote a difficult process.

Telorand ,

In some countries, you get a fine for failure to vote, and voting day is a mandatory paid day off of work. I wish the US would do that.

blaue_Fledermaus ,
@blaue_Fledermaus@mstdn.io avatar

Here voting is always on a Sunday, and for those that work Sundays, the employer has to arrange so that they have time to go vote.

eezeebee , to asklemmy in Be honest: have you ever lost your temper with a customer service rep? And did it ever help?
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Yes I have, and no it does not help. Always apologize and tell them it’s the situation, not them, that you are upset with.

I’ve done that job before and most likely they would help you if they could, but the company won’t train them or make any solutions available because it costs money. Your impression that they don’t know what they’re talking about is probably accurate.

Your best bet is to keep escalating to a higher department (“manager”, “office of the president”).

BallsandBayonets , to asklemmy in Is it wrong to report email as spam when you previously opted out and they either add a new subscription/newsletter, etc.?

I applied to a job with a hotel once, now they send me regular emails about other unrelated jobs. But to unsubscribe I have to log in, and apparently applying to the job didn’t create a complete profile so I’d have to create an account just to unsubscribe.

They’re marked as spam now.

bleistift2 , to asklemmy in How do you feel you've aged?

At the end of my 20s I can feel that I’m becoming stupider. Reading texts or just thinking about a problem take more effort than they used to.

cashmaggot OP ,

I know I keep saying dumb shit all over the joint but like...uh...you ever think that maybe you've got an undiagnosed mental condition that's messing with you? Or that maybe you're not eating well enough? (I only say this because the Brain-Gut connetion) Or just like...idk, not giving yourself enough time to decompress? Cause legitimately you might be exhasuted, you might be depressed, you might be malnurished, you might be ADHD, you might just need to run. I mean could be anything, but if you feel like you're losing iq you might be suffering from brain-fog or something like that. Idk, I'm not a doctor. I'm just saying like...there might be something to it, you know?

rando895 ,

The undiagnosed mental condition could be it tbh. I found it hard to learn anything I didn’t find really interesting (among other things). Boom, ADHD diagnosis in my thirties

MadBob , to asklemmy in Be honest: have you ever lost your temper with a customer service rep? And did it ever help?

Once I decided to end my contract with Virgin Media and they kept asking me why I was leaving, so I kept saying I didn’t want to explain, I’d just cancel (because I knew they’d do their best to talk me around) and it got to the point where I became firm, but I didn’t shout, though I wanted to.

Tangentially related: after I’d signed up to the Telephone Preference Service, I knew that the only people ringing me to sell stuff were doing so illegally, so if they persisted after I’d made that point, I used to just verbally abuse them. Right cathartic.

theshatterstone54 ,

Similar story. The only way we could finally end it is if we paid 1 month at the high price (it was a promotional contract, 20-something quid for 100 mbps or so they claimed; it became 40+ after that).

From the about page it looks like it’s a non profit that does not enforse or support candidates or parties, they claim to only try and work on erasing the barriers between voters and the act of voting

ByteOnBikes OP ,

Yep!

In the political side for nonprofits, there are clear rules of what you can do or not do. So a nonprofit with the goal of getting people to vote should not lean left or right.

In the one I volunteered at a decade ago for gay rights, each volunteer had to sign that they are simply pushing the issue forward, not promoting a particular politician or party. It was pretty freaking clear what party we were aligned with, but we couldn’t actively tell people to go vote for X or Y, only that here’s what party X has shared about the issue, while party Y hasn’t given us any comment about it.

PeepinGoodArgs ,

Vote.org is an classic site for voter registration. It has existed many years

douglasg14b , (edited )
@douglasg14b@lemmy.world avatar

That doesn’t answer the question.

Domains can expire, be sold, have their hosting (nameservers) changed…etc it’s very conceivable given the current climate that it could be a malicious site used for data exfiltration from prospective voters. The security posture, if any, of the owner are also unknown, meaning it may be unknowingly compromised.

Especially when you have people willing to drop tens of millions of dollars on voter suppression.

Plain and simple, don’t enter your personal information into a 3rd party site. Use your official government provided ones for this purpose.

PeepinGoodArgs ,

That’s fair

Catoblepas ,

If you don’t want to give a random site your information (good practice), scroll down and select your state from the drop down menu and it’ll direct you to your state government’s official website to check your registration. I actually had to enter less info than vote.org was asking for to check mine, lol.

Donebrach ,
@Donebrach@lemmy.world avatar

search for your state’s Secretary of State website or go to your state’s official website if you are concerned. An official government website will generally have a .gov address or a .state.StateLetterAbriviation.us or some permutation.

brbposting ,

OP ( @ByteOnBikes ):

Recommend changing your URL to the .gov:

usa.gov/confirm-voter-registration

This will take everyone to nass dot org/can-I-vote in Step 1, but I like sending people through a dot gov first so there’s no bamboozle concern. Feels right.

Thanks for spreading the word 😎 Checked mine when someone posted a recommendation Texans check their status the other day.

Edit: for “register or update [or check status]”, the fed provides:

vote.gov

The USA link focuses on checking status.

dan , to technology in Bitcoin is Stupid and Does Not Deserve an Emoji (blog post)
@dan@upvote.au avatar

You don’t get a new Emoji by creating a change.org petition lol

You need to write a proper proposal and send it to the Unicode consortium: unicode.org/emoji/proposals.html. If it gets rejected, it’s four years until you can reapply for the same Emoji.

lud ,

A Bitcoin emoji was rejected in 2020 i doubt it will be any different this time.

dan ,
@dan@upvote.au avatar

Yeah I doubt it’d be approved… I was just saying that there’s an actual process that has to be followed. The Unicode consortium aren’t going to care about a Change .org partition that gets maybe 20k signatures at most given billions of people use Unicode and they’ve got proper processes to go through.

lud ,

I absolutely agree with you.

brbposting ,

Overnight a terrible proposal on the first day, get it rejected for everyone for four years

Ffs can we stop posting this propaganda that pushes the agenda that Finland is a real place?

ByteOnBikes , to asklemmy in Be honest: have you ever lost your temper with a customer service rep? And did it ever help?

Yes. More than I care to admit. No. It never helped.

It’s even worse today, where the front line support starts with a defensive attitude now.

I’ve tried a bunch of different strategies. But as Im now in my 40s, I’ve learned that you always get better service with honey.

I started doing that Gen Z stuff of like, “Hey man. You are probably just doing what you need to do, and I’m hoping my issue is easy as fuck to solve. If not, I’m not here to give you trouble because the system sucks.”

There’s a great book called Verbal Judo which goes through how to deal with the suck. Its not for everyone. But for people like me who tend to blow up easily, it’s great for keeping your composure, getting to a solution without ruining your day (even if it isn’t what you want), and remembering the person behind the screen/phone is human.

I feel like I’ve been hit by a couple of SUV’s and only barely able to claim to be in my 30’s. A few years ago I had an xray done and was in a room waiting for a doctor. This random guy walked in and asked my name, age, and if I had just had my scapula xrayed. He said He had to double check that nothing had been mixed up because my bones looked like someone in their 80’s… Maybe avoid actually getting hit by those SUV’s. My folks are in their mid to upper sixties, but I’m still the slower crochety one, unless I’m on a bike. For all you mid to old farts, there is a reason so many of us are on bikes. It may seem impossible, hell, I can barely sit up or walk, but it is amazing how bad of shape a person can be in and still ride a bike when it is properly setup and fit to the person. Without riding I fall apart both physically and mentally.

In other news, I expected the logarithm of day length verses lifespan to level out so that days seemed like a stable unit of mental measure, but the slowdown never happened and a day is an impossibly short amount of time.

cashmaggot OP ,

Cause if you are, and you're still lined up for surgery god bless. If not, and there is some kinda treatment I hope somebody's got your back and you've got a little time you can point towards that. WOAH! You are the person? My guy, you were on my mind the other day because I literally was told by my doctor that they might have to go forward with an operation and I was like "I guess it's you and me both brother" and sent some mental sorrows your way. Hahahaha! God, I hope that operation goes well. It sounds like it'll be okay, I mean it sounds awful, but it also sounds like you've got a clear path to being maybe 60 or even 40 instead of 80. Just hot damn! Big hugs =X!
