On the gender controversy…the Olympics pool from so many humans that for many years now, you can tell just visually that top contenders are those naturally selected with genetic traits lending them unusual prowess in their sport. For strength based sports, more women with male traits rise to the top and vice-versa for men in more physiologically female dominated areas.

kevindqc ,

Yeah. Should Michael Phelps have been banned from the Olympics because his genes gave him a perfect body for swimming, giving him an unfair advantage over those who don’t? Where is the line drawn?

GraniteM ,
DragonTypeWyvern ,

Do not show this to a biologist unless you want to get lectured for a bit.

GraniteM ,

I’m not sure if the meme conveys my point precisely. I’m not saying that the Olympics are a genetic superman breeding program.

I’m saying that if you put a call out across the globe for the most gifted competitors for decades, you’re going to be getting people who are already deeply passionate about their events, but if you presume that level of competitive spirit to begin with, then you’re going to start seeing people who are also genetically advantaged emerge as top competitors.

Michael Phelps is already an incredibly passionate swimmer, but then again so is everyone in the pool with him. He’s got his super long arms that, if he weren’t competitive, wouldn’t be worth a damn, but combined with his training and commitment help give him an edge.

I bet if you did a little digging you’d see all sorts of genetic quirks among top level Olympians. Weight lifters with surprisingly dense muscle fiber, skaters and gymnasts with extra-robust inner ears, target shooters with extraordinary eyesight. It’s not meant to take away from their talent or the work they’ve done, but it’s not any more surprising than seeing extraordinarily tall players in the NBA, or extraordinarily stocky NFL linebackers.

This feeds my response to everyone who tried to pretend “All Lives Matter” or “Police shoot more white people than black people” was anything other than racist, bigoted obstructionism during 2020. There is no proposed police reform that I’m aware of which would only help black people. No matter the impetus, police reform would help everyone.

Same thing here. They didn’t help to effect social change that only helped black people, they helped to effect social change that helped us all.

And they did much more than that.

Sorry for the listicle but it’s a good one with decent detail.

MindTraveller ,

If white racists cared about white lives, then the fact that police shoot white people too should mean double the reason to abolish the police for them. But white racists don’t care about white lives. They only care about black lives; ending them. “All Lives Matter” may be true, but it’s a lie from the people who say it.

Fun fact: these amazing people are the reason Democrats and many Republicans voted in favor of gun control laws in California. They were racists that feared armed minorities protesting for equity and nipped that in the bud.

Now it’s us Leftists holding our unarmed dicks in our hands while armed Christofascist Republicans are trying to take over the government, while we finger waggle at them and hope the racist cops are on our side since none of us have enough guns to counter their deterrence efforts.

Elon has all but admitted that the hyperloop was just a distraction to derail California’s public rail plans, and now that thay ship has sailed he doesnt give a shit about hyperloop anymore. The Hyperloop concept is literally just a tool that Elon uses to prevent development of public transport in California so that people will buy more teslas instead.

The Hyperloop seemed impossible form the get go. It had so many issues that are easily solved by… Not putting people in vacuum tubes

TheSlad ,

Here let me try to solve all of it’s issues:

  1. Get rid of the vacuum idea to reduce complexity and points of failure.
  2. Move track above ground to reduce manufacture/maintenance costs.
  3. Make the “pods” longer and chain multiple pods together to increase efficiency.

Wait a minute… 🤔 🚉

I HIGHLY recommend forking a nix-config that uses flakes, home-manager, and whatever window manager you prefer. Since Nix is so versatile (and the documentation of flakes and home-manager are BAD), I found it absolutely crucial to reuse a well-architected config and slowly modify it in a VM to sketch out my config until it was stable enough to try on a real machine.

HakFoo , to amateur_radio in Random question for today: Considering people who are not amateurs, if you wanted to create increased visibility and participation in amateur radio, what would you do?

As a non-amateur who every few months thinks “I should consider getting a license”, I’ve been hoping for an obvious bootstrap point.

The library has some old “here’s every exam question” style cram books, but I’m actually looking for a course for understanding, so I don’t pass the exam and proceed to have no idea what to do or how to behave. That went so well eith the driver’s license exam. :)

667 ,
@667@lemmy.radio avatar

Here’s your bootstrap. Assuming you’re in the US, HamStudy.org. Spaced repetition studying for the exam, no Morse code requirement anymore.

FCC exams can now be administered remotely via computer. I’ve taken all three of my exams remotely; my first while sitting on a beach!

k0stk ,
@k0stk@mastodon.radio avatar

@667 @HakFoo Unfortunately our club is fixated on scheduled instructor led classes (death by powerpoint for the most part) and in-person administration of electronic tests.

They deliberately conceal the fact that self-study and on-demand remote testing are options when people inquire about getting licensed.

edit: fixed wordwrap

667 ,
@667@lemmy.radio avatar

That’s disappointing to hear. What would be the fallout within your club if you were to just go get licensed on your own? Does your jurisdiction permit licensure outside of clubs?

k0stk ,
@k0stk@mastodon.radio avatar

@667 In the US licensure is independent of clubs.

There is gatekeeping going on. It seems to stem from OMs who want to control how folks get into hobby.

Although they won't turn away a warm body toting a license...

Edit: added tag line

@667@lemmy.radio avatar

Ahh ok, I’m US licensed also. Was surprised to see your club insists on such a rigid learning experience.

You’ll know best for your present situation, but I’d encourage you to just go get your license on your own and get on the air. There’s plenty of media channels to learn.

k0stk , (edited )
@k0stk@mastodon.radio avatar

@667 I'm already licensed ... went "from zero to hero" on my own over a span of about 4 months back in 2011.

It's just so frustrating seeing the obstacles which are constantly thrown in the way of people who want to become licensed (or upgraded).

Edit: licensing year

@667@lemmy.radio avatar

100%

That’s wild your club makes newbies sit through such a course and refuses any kind of modernizations. OMs for sure.

ndz ,
@ndz@noauthority.social avatar

@HakFoo @vk6flab The real learning begins (and continues indefinitely) AFTER you get your license. Learn to follow the rules and not hurt anyone

Go through HamStudy.org and start taking practice tests. (I also picked up Gordon Wests books and did a once-through).

One tip is to grab the tech and general at the same sitting.

Got an cheap HT (handheld dual band)? Get on RepeaterBook, program repeaters in, and start listening to local nets. Test in person if you can but online is also avail

vk6flab OP ,
@vk6flab@lemmy.radio avatar

The answer on how to get your licence depends on which country or locality you live.

If you are comfortable sharing that, we can likely get you a starting point.

I don’t think he really needed advice (he seems to have a good grip on the situation) but wanted to talk to someone about it. I think it helped. And I got a feed, plus some free Greek yoghurt. Bonus.
