Underwaterbob , to science_memes in Pavlov

My daughter was watching Bluey the other day, and Bingo wanted some “Pavlova”. I immediately thought it was some reference to them all being dogs and Pavlov.

Nope. Turns out it’s actually a dessert named after a Russian ballerina that originated in either New Zealand or Australia in the early 20th century.

Serpent ,

I think if any Australians see you you are in deep trouble!

Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In ,

I only knew of the Australian connection by reading https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Continent

Underwaterbob ,

Is Pavlova a national Australian treasure or something? Wikipedia seems unsure as to whether it originated in New Zealand or Australia.

Cephalotrocity , to technology in Student dorm does not allow wifi routers

Pretty sure you could end around their TOS by connecting a PC with 2 Ethernet ports to the provider’s internet and connect your router to the PC with the 2nd port. In the PC’s OS bridge the 2 ports together, and disable the routers firewall.

sugar_in_your_tea ,

That’s just using a router with extra steps.

stephen01king ,

An extra step that doesn’t go against their TOS, though.

sugar_in_your_tea ,

Is it though? It seems the prohibition is against using any form of wireless access point, it doesn’t matter where the network cable plugs in. When you have too many wifi networks blasting in a small area, the experience is degraded for everyone.

stephen01king ,

That might be one of the concern, but the TOS clearly doesn’t state that. They only prohibit against attaching multiple devices to the network. If you attach it to your desktop PC, it could be considered not on the network as long as you don’t bridge the two connections together.

sugar_in_your_tea ,

“Disruptive Device” means any device that prevents or interferes with our provision of the 4Wireless to other customers (such as a wireless access point such as wireless routers) or any other device used by you in breach of the Acceptable Use Policy;

That’s in the OP, so it specifically calls out any kind of wireless access point.

Yeah, it might not be on the network, but the prohibition doesn’t seem to be limited to network-connected devices. Bridging from your phone to your AP/router w/o touching the network may still be against TOS.

stephen01king ,

Oh yeah, they did mention that clause. I guess you can still limit the power of the wireless router so it doesn’t penetrate too far outside the rooms, as well as using bands that is not as congrsted. That might be good enough to comply to the TOS, or it might not.

sugar_in_your_tea ,

Oh sure. Personally, I would just break the rule and drop the transmit power on my router, banking on them not bothering to enforce it. They’ll most likely give a warning first, especially since the dorm rep said it would be fine. I have broken plenty of dorm rules, yet never got as much as an email because I made sure my rule-breaking didn’t bother other people so nobody reported it.

A lot of times, those rules are in place because someone ruined things for everyone and they added it so they have something to point to. If you don’t cause problems with others, it shouldn’t be an issue.

Regardless of how your touch typing improvement project goes, be sure to get a good mic. Voice typing has come a long way, if you work in circumstances where you can speak aloud. It’s usually faster than my touch typing most of the time (not that I’m a blazing fast typist, but still).

Species with internal fertilization tend to have females care for the young because the male is the one who can leave first. He can maximize his reproductive success by searching for other females while the female is left with the choice between putting a lot more time and energy into caring for the offspring or leaving them to die.

Species with external fertilization usually have the opposite dynamic. The female lays unfertilized eggs and then leaves. The male is the one stuck caring for them because they would die otherwise. However, the males of some species have evolved to be too clever for this:

Among the maternal mouthbrooding cichlids, it is quite common … for the male to fertilise the eggs only once they are in the female’s mouth.

@the_dopamine_fiend@lemmy.world avatar

The jump from mono to stereo made a lot of engineers’ heads spin. Then again, how many 100% perfect 5.1 albums have you heard?

Actually, I’ve listened to only three 5.1 remixes, all of them phenomenal albums to begin with, and their 5.1 jobs were pretty meh. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots came out pretty good, but mainly because they just fucked around and tried stuff.

Iamsqueegee ,

Have you ever listened to Zaireeka appropriately? I haven’t, but that must be a headache to line up correctly.

LucasWaffyWaf ,

It was a pain in the ass but me and a buddy got it working once. I was a young teen and this was long before weed helped me see more beauty in music, so I didn’t get much out of it, but as an adult it’d probably be different.

SnotFlickerman ,
@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I thought part of the point of Zaireeka is that it is impossible to get it exact every time, so every time you play it it is a unique soundscape.

prole ,

I don’t think it’s supposed to line up “correctly” no?

li10 ,

I hate the “spatial” mixes.

Sometimes they’re done really well, but most of the time it’s just putting different parts of the song in different areas and makes it sound “diluted”.

Like, the guitar is in front of you, then the bass is behind and to the left… why??

ayyy ,

You’re missing a key ingredient: Lysergic acid diethylamide.

In all other circumstances I agree with you.

li10 ,

Lysergic acid diethylamide doesn’t fix a bad mix.

You can still hear all the separate instruments surrounding you on a good regular mix, all the spatial does is break the interwoven sound.

prole ,

Lysergic acid diethylamide doesn’t fix a bad mix.

I mean… Have you ever listened to “Whole Lotta Love” or “Axis: Bold as Love” while tripping balls? Those panning parts are pretty wild.

DannyBoy ,

My understanding is that most (at least rock) music is mixed this way, just subtle enough to help your brain pick out instruments but not enough to consciously notice.

li10 ,

Music is mixed that way, but spatial then takes a hammer to that concept.

It takes away the single interwoven sound and imo sounds like different tracks being played on opposite sides of the room.

I usually try the atmos mix for an album if it’s available on tidal, and usually all it ever does is remove the punch from songs.

Hammocks4All OP ,

It makes sense. I bet it’s super hard, especially at first.

It’s largely a headphone problem, at least for me. I can’t listen to a song where certain tracks are completely isolated to one ear. The audio doesn’t need to be mixed perfectly, but I need at least a little bit of each sound in each ear. Otherwise it’s too distracting. My brain hates it.

Tabooki ,

It’s supposed to sound like the band is in front of you on a stage. Not all mashed into one spot in the center of the stage. You should be able to close your eyes and picture where each drum is positioned. Where the before guitar players are standing. And you should be able to hear the shape of the room. Modern recordings mixed digitally can no longer do this. Then again if you’re streaming Spotify into Bluetooth your missing most of what’s there anyways.

saigot ,

There’s some cool 5.1 and even 7.1 stuff in classical music (I don’t have a a surround sound setup myself but I hear a lot of talk of it).

Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, who produced Pet Sounds, was actually deaf in one ear. Despite that, he got along just fine in a monophonic world, but the switch to stereo completely left him behind. It was a huge change in how music was mixed.

prole ,

And yet Pet Sounds (and even the contemporary stuff they originally recorded for SMiLE but never officially released) still sounds phenomenal to this day despite being in mono.

The man was a wizard.

Recently, I really enjoyed the scholomance trilogy by Naomi Novik. Had anti capitalist themes and cool world building. main character can be a little polaraizing though, she can be “b wordy” for lack of a better less misogynistic term coming to mind, I’ve seen some talk about how much they hated her character and others how much they loved her (I personally loved her)
