Windows doesn’t play nice with Linux that means you always install Linux last as Linux does play nice with windows.

OhVenus_Baby ,

When windows updates it can totally break grub as it tries to flush out anything other than windows by default.

Stiltonfondu ,

If you use separate disks there shouldn’t be any issues.

Out of morbid curiosity I just installed Windows 11 on a spare ssd alongside my main Fedora install. All I had to do was re-add the Fedora disk to first in the boot order and rebuild the grub config with os-prober enabled to add the windows install to grub

No issues apart from Windows 11 being horrible

lordnikon ,

yeah that works totally it’s more the windows installer doesn’t respect the Linux install so if you don’t know how to do that how to do that with grub your screwed

Kelly , to nostupidquestions in In January, is it winter in Australia?

And given that, most of the population lives in northern hemisphere, is there a body of dad jokes and culture tropes related to the fact that “we’re different”, or is it just too cringe and boring.

Nothing anyone wound mention but there are some ironic Christmas clothing like a shirt with Father Christmas with sunglasses and cooking a barbeque, or a rashie with a knitted sweater pattern.

We are also aware that if a foreign studio announces a game or movie with a season for their release window they probably mean the northern season. Our studios tend to just use a month instead.

kyub , to linux in Switching back to Windows. For now.

Well, Linux is like a juggernaut that’s inching ever closer in all sorts of areas (while already dominating in some areas). The time frame where it makes sense for Microsoft to spend increasing amounts of resources to maintain and further develop Windows is closing, and if you look closely, they’ve pretty much shown that Windows is not at all priority #1 anymore since at least Nadella became CEO. We also live in a world which is increasingly becoming OS agnostic, which is bad for Windows’ dominance and great for Linux, MacOS, and others (because there’s less and less relevant applications specifically requiring Windows). Of course, Linux on the desktop also grows stronger and more mature year after year, which further accelerates the change.

There will also be some points in time which hugely accelerate things, like Valve going all-in on Steam Deck and Proton and to make Steam a more independent store/community platform, and also Microsoft making Windows worse and more user-hostile over time. From a business perspective, it makes sense for MS - they want to go full cloud (= full control), almost full removal of control for the user, and full ingestion of as much data from the user as they can - to sell it, utilize it for own purposes, and train AIs with it. It’s what increases profits in the short-term. A lot of companies are doing that kind of stuff. MS is just one of the more ruthless ones, which, again, makes sense, because they still have a big userbase to exploit. In the long-term, they’re damaging, no, DESTROYING Windows’ reputation as a half-decent OS (even among Windows fans) and driving more and more users to the alternatives. It’s kind of inevitable. MS’ striving for profit has doomed Windows, and soon, when no single company will be able to compete with the ever evolving Linux ecosystem anymore, Windows is also doomed. It’s kind of a law of nature now. It’s not a question of if, just when.

(I’ve used both Windows and Linux extensively, Windows since MSDOS/Win3.x, Linux since 1998. About 10 years ago, I’ve switched exclusively to Linux and banned Windows into a VM only that gets booted less and less [I think it’s been off for 2 years already]). I, for one, welcome our new old Linux overlords.

I think you could have kept the Windows drive installed while installing Linux as long as you were careful not to let the installer touch that device. But regardless, ideally you would run os-prober from Linux and let it update Grub with an entry for Windows (some Linux installers do this automatically). Then you would be able to choose the OS from the Grub menu during boot.

WeebLife OP ,

All the tutorials say to remove every drive but the one you are installing on, it’s better to be safe, or so I thought…

And I didn’t know about OS prober. I figured that if the OS’s are on seperate drives I could just enter bios each time and select the drive I want to boot to.

possiblylinux127 ,

You can but grub is easier

pelotron ,
@pelotron@midwest.social avatar

You can definitely use the bios to boot into each one as well. I’m not sure why that didn’t work for you.

When you say removed drive do you mean physically took it out of the PC. I have no idea why that would matter but I never did that step. All I did to dual boot mint & win 11 was put in an extra SSD and put mint on it. Now when ever I boot I can choose mint or windows before anything.

WeebLife OP ,

Yes, I physically removed my windows drive from the PC.

Blxter ,
@Blxter@lemmy.zip avatar

could be wrong but I think that’s the problem. I was always told do windows first so if you remove the windows drive you don’t really have a windows drive anymore so the install is wrong/buggy or whatever. Keep both drives in and do windows then linux

hotpotatoe , to nostupidquestions in With the death of the Hamas leader people are saying we are on the verge of a regional war. What is a regional war and what does it look like?

The media always hypes things more than their actual size. Most likely there won’t be a regional war, it is too expensive for everyone to go into war. And one side is stronger than the other. But if it does happen, here is how I think it might look like: Israel(most likely) or Iran/Hezbollah declare war on each other. They advance their troops to the border for invasion. International pressure rises to prevent a war. If pressure fails, aggression starts heavily. You can expect Israel to attack Iran where it hurts(it’s milita leaders or Tehran directly) and expect Iran to do the same(attacking Israeli citizens with missiles). Every country in the world has to pick a side to support. West would support Israel and supply it with ammo. Iran might get support from North Korea, possibly Russia and China(although they are not strong allies of Iran). I expect Arab countries to not join the war, or join lightly(sending observation force, or some weapons through unofficial means). Expect Iran’s militia’s in Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, and Iraq to provide varying degress of help to Iran. Most effective would be Hezbollah which is it’s strongest and it’s closest to Israel. Second would be Syria, it could become a front on the Golan heights, Iranian milita has strong presence there. Iraq/Yemen won’t provide much, likely only used for enforcement(securing Red Sea, land route from Iran to Lebanon) Expect destruction of Lebanon’s villages, refugess from the Middle East fleeing the war and the economic situation.
