koinu , to android in What are your power user/advanced use cases for your phone?

This is pretty niche, but damn do I use my phone a lot to manage my Homelab server. In fact, I don’t actually currently have access to a computer, so I can ONLY manage my server via my phone.

I use JuiceSSH to SSH into my server.

I use OpenVPN Connect to connect to my server via VPN.

There’s also plenty of apps that I use to connect to the *arr suite of software that I have running for media.

giant_smeeg OP ,

Yeah same here. Been using nzb360. Absolutely wicked app!

koinu ,

I’m using it too! I currently have LunaSea for direct management of radarr, sonarr, and even tautulli!

I actually prefer it because IMO it has a nicer UI. I do have NZB360 as a backup in case for whatever reason LunaSea fails, but also NZB360 supports adding qBittorrent, so I did!

But I actually found that the app qBittorrent Remote works well, so I use it in conjunction with LunaSea.

So good.

This si currently what I have on my phone, and then I use Google Chrome/Firefox to manage everything else that doesn’t have an app/PWA. https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/402ef871-2a9d-4316-a367-63383f999545.jpeg

giant_smeeg OP ,

Very interesting. I need to check some of these out. Lunasea you say?

koinu ,

Highly recommend! But be careful, it doesn’t support torrents/torrent management. IIRC, the dev wanted the app on both iOS and LunaSea, so he chose to commit torrents from the android version. Fair trade IMO.

giant_smeeg OP ,

Yeah that’s fair. I haven’t used torrents in years. Usenet!

I got it all setup and think atm I prefer the UI from NZB360 but lunasea is opensource and does seem to display the data better. Will keep both setup for now (Y)

I dropped the lunasea dev a few ££ either way from my google play balance!

giant_smeeg OP ,

How do you find trakt vs other options?

OptimisticPrime ,
@OptimisticPrime@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

Similar, I have a raspberry pi running nextcloud for storage and jellyfin as a mediaserver and I do a lot via phone too. Actually a lot of times I use an app called Raspi check which can send command line inputs that you can save and just tap to send them immediately. Like rebooting for example.

koinu ,

Oh wow, that Raspi check sounds super handy!

With JuiceSSH, I still have to first log into and establish SSH connection before I can use the saved “snippets”.

OptimisticPrime ,
@OptimisticPrime@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

Well, its maybe not very safe since the app saves your login details. In my case I don’t care since my server is not accessible online, just in our home intranet. But it is super useful if you have some commands you repeatedly run. I’ve been wanting to setup a script to run my backup process fully automated so I could just start it via the app, haven’t had time to do that yet.

koinu ,

I haven’t had a chance to play with it, but apparently Ansible is supposed to be able to automate your server commands?

Might be worth a look.

squaresinger ,

For SSH I usually just use pure OpenSSH over Terminal Emulator.

koinu ,

Idk if I can do this. I really want/like the saved snippets so I don’t have to retype everything over and over again lol

squaresinger ,

I have a physical keyboard attachment, so typing is much less painful.

At risk of sounding like an Arch shill, I've had the best experience with Hyprland on Arch. I first tried to get it working on Garuda but couldn't get it to work without weird issues, then found it wasn't available on Linux Mint (might be available now? Not sure). Worked pretty much out of the box on Arch with Sddm, and havent run into issues since.

That being said I tend to not install many packages, which reduces the chance of things breaking, so your miles may vary.

I think Hyprland might be available on Pop!_OS, might be worth checking that out.

rivingtondown , to gaming in Working parents, how do you find time to game?

My kid is a toddler, I can’t play games around him, even on my Switch or Steam Deck because he’s too distracting and wants too much attention. My wife and I usually play games for about an hour after he goes to sleep and we finish all the chores (laundry, cooking, dishes, food prep, daycare prep).

Between about 9:00pm and 10:00pm, on weekends if either of us have the time we’ll try to get chores done during the day while he’s awake which would give us maybe one more hour.

That’s it though, probably a third of the time we spend that single hour with some other form of relaxation (TV, book, social media, maybe ½ a movie). Another third of the time we just have other obligations or extra chores - maybe we need to do taxes or buy airplane tickets or book hotels for travel. Then, probably one or two nights a week on average we’re just too tired to do anything past 9pm and go to bed early.

So… all said, maybe 3 hours of gaming a week on average. Every so often my wife or I will take the kiddo out by ourselves and the other will have an extra hour or two for whatever but that’s not every week.

RandoCalrandian , to linux in Should I bother learning Podman?
@RandoCalrandian@kbin.social avatar

I can't help but laugh at this.

"learn how to use podman" from someone who already knows docker is their happy path.

https://docs.podman.io/en/latest/index.html#what-is-podman

Most users can simply alias Docker to Podman (alias docker=podman) without any problems

Seriously, the only two problems i've had are:

  1. makefile doesn't honor the alias
  2. need to restart the VM occasionally
ablackcatstail OP ,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I would consider myself a very beginning docker user so I’ve a long way to go but I can see, given that I am a beginner, it might make sense to pivot now to Podman.

AbidanYre , (edited )

It might be easier to learn some docker first. That’s what all the documentation is written for and I’ve found the “alias docker to podman and call it a day” approach to be overly optimistic.

RandoCalrandian ,
@RandoCalrandian@kbin.social avatar

conversely, switching now means he'll be learning domain specific knowledge for podman, the thing he wants to work in, and not building it in docker, the thing he's trying to move away from

AbidanYre ,

That’s certainly possible. I’m just saying it may be faster to learn docker and then learn the differences, given the abundance of docker documentation that exists.

dandroid ,

I did need to install some additional stuff to get docker-compose working with podman, and I needed to make sure I ran those things as a user instead of as root to make sure that the containers created by docker-compose were running rootless. But I do have my Lemmy instance running with rootless containers using podman.

My next step is to convert it to a systemd service, but I just haven’t got there yet.

codecompost ,

But is it really a drop-in replacement for docker? Networking seems fundamentally different.

I tried to use a docker compose file for Wordpress as an example, with nginx-proxy-manager in another compose file. They’re linked together through an external network.

Podman works differently. You’re expected to create ‘pods’. I’m not super clear on this (just dipping my toes) but podman seems to be an alternative to k8s, not docker.

erock ,

That’s the claim but buildx is extremely limited on podman.

gorogorochan , to linux in Does anyone actually like the default GNOME workflow?
@gorogorochan@lemmy.world avatar

I prefer GNOME to KDE and I understand that there’s research and philosophy behind some of the decisions, but I just can’t get around some of the quirks. “Workflow” itself is fine, with tiling on top, you can get by. But those window decorations. So much space is taken by a completely useless, fat bar at the top of each window even though it’s not really aimed at being touchscreen native.

pe1uca , to selfhost in [Question] Any advice to give to give? Starting to self-host soon

Caddy is a very simple reverse proxy which handles the https redirect by default, other proxies are http by default and you have to manually configure the redirect. Also caddy automatically handles the TLS certificate for HTTPS with http challenge by default (need port 80 open) or with DNS challenge (you need to build caddy with your DNS module and type the API key)

jvrava9 OP ,
@jvrava9@lemmy.ml avatar

Thx! I heard about Nginx before, should I consider using Caddy instaed?

pe1uca ,

I’ve always thought nginx configs were too complicated… But that’s because I’m not a sysadmin, so I have little to no point of reference.

The Caddyfile is a very simple file, and as mentioned, I don’t have to worry about configuring the https redirect or the ssl certificates (reading and obtaining/renewing them), which is more than enough for me.
I’ve only used it as a reverse proxy which also helps to my config being so simple.

I’ve read caddy has better performance, but there are posts saying otherwise too. So I’m not sure.

phoenix591 ,

nginx is fine, lemmy uses it inside of its docker images too. I don’t find it’s config scary(template lemmy internal nginx config)

CubitOom , (edited ) to linux in Best distro for Hyprland?

Arch, NixOS and openSUSE Tumbleweed are very supported.

Source: wiki.hyprland.org/Getting-Started/Installation/

I would recommend an Arch based distro if you want to keep it simple. That will give you access to the AUR and compatibility with the arch wiki.

PS: Arch can be very stable, especially if you use an LTS kernel and don’t restart during updates.

theshatterstone54 OP ,

I’m considering Tumbleweed. I think it might work.

Thugosaurus_Rex , to gaming in Instead of "casual" or "ranked" they should just have "play to win" or "play for fun."

There was a brief time in the late 90s to early 2000s where you’d just hop into an open server. The lobby would keep the same players as it went round to round and people would just filter in and out as they felt like it. It didn’t track scores or stats between games, and there wasn’t a leveling or progression system that followed you. You just played through the round as it came. People seemed to care a whole lot less about their record or team–it just seemed like everyone was happy to be able to play online. Maybe it’s just because I’m older now and I’m looking back at it with rose tinted glasses, but I wish we could go back to casual modes like that. I don’t have the energy or will to deal with people the way it’s set up now.

ampersandrew ,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

I remember those times. They were awful. I had no fun if the people I started the match with weren't the same I ended it with. What was the point? It's not fun if I can't even tell if I'm getting better at the game. I didn't need to be the best Counter-Strike player, but I wanted to play actual Counter-Strike.

However, while this isn't necessarily mutually exclusive, those games that let you run your own servers will actually survive to be seen by future generations, unlike just about every game with matchmaking these days that won't let you run the game in LAN or on a private server. It's possible to have both, but devs don't want to.

Kolanaki OP ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

I was there. I would prefer to go back to that. At least you’d be able to find communities that have the same idea of what makes the game fun. Random matchmaking sucks donkey dick for making friends.

zergling_man ,

xonotic, sauerbraten, 0ad

PenguinTD ,

I was also there but it’s not a really good system when scale up. If you are from the same era, and if you did not own a clan server, they can kick you out for whatever reason. (Like killing a mod one too many times.) And for competitive games that really doesn’t work well, that’s why old server has that after round auto balancing mod, it shuffles player around base on how they performed. A fake way to try balance the team. Ie. I was kinda decent capper for 3wave ctf, grenade rocket jump and all that. So if opponent doesn’t have a good sniper or also decent enough capper, I can usually win the game even when our team is a bit short on players. Then when auto balancing come around to balance players, it actually make it less balance.(you also can’t dial it too much that you got spawn camped and thus one side of player just quit to find another server.)

And it also not helping if you go to a clan server and the clan all want to stay on the same team. Which often leads to players go in/out frequently.(that’s why later on GameSpy can even show match status so you can choose to join or not.)

A well managed server pool and MMR system helps resolve all those issues, and scale up really well.

PowerSeries ,

And you might even get to know people who visited the same dedicated server, and make friends.

I even got admin access and set up some mods (pyro dodgeball night woo).

Good times.

Omegamanthethird ,

There’s a customs browser in Halo MCC that is essentially that. There are a lot of fun game modes to be found on there.

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

The problem with non balanced lobbies is that they can be completely wrecked by someone who is more skilled.

Gekkonen , (edited )

This is especially true in games like Starcraft where even the tiniest difference in skill results in a total face stomp.

Kolanaki OP , (edited )
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

This is still an issue with matchmaking systems intended to keep the game balanced in developer controlled servers though, so I don’t know what the relevance is.

Fizz ,

Kolanaki OP ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Admins do not kick people for being to good. I dont know where you get that idea.

Kolanaki OP ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Well I can tell you never actually played in that era, because it did happen. Just on the SLAUGHTERHOUSE TF2 servers, in which I myself was an admin, would kick players who completely dominated a game over to another server where they would fit in better. This was a pretty common practice. Not to mention the admins who power tripped and would kick anyone who killed them too often or claim everyone better than they were was cheating.

LLMs. Despite how absurdly useful they are, I can recall a time when I had the skills of remembering phone numbers naturally and being able to easily navigate with no maps of any kind.

These skills have deteriorated significantly in the past 10 years, and they’re not the only ones. The common thread they all have is my smartphone replaced them.

I fear losing a skill that is less innocuous, from the new tech effectively replacing my need to practice it.

banana_meccanica ,

Try not having a smartphone with you when you leave the house. Actually many starting returning back to basic phones just for calls and SMS.

Kid who doesn’t remember a time without a phone, using a “dumb” phone is impossible despite a want for it. So many things are qr based or require a phone at my college. I learned this the hard way when my phone broke and I didn’t replace it for 2 weeks. Couldn’t even access my accounts cause of 2fa.

I would love to use a “dumb” phone for text only but the most random shit will require a “smart” feature.
