Diabetes Type II: You can lose your feet. You can go blind. The risk of cancer, stroke, and heart disease go way up. You can get kidney failure. There’s more, but it’s a long list of shit that can go wrong. You don’t want it.

CoffeeBot ,

Yes. This also takes years to develop and is a slow painful decline as wounds start to not heal and you get gangrene.

An aside, as a type 1 diabetic. You don’t want diabetes.

Coeus , to selfhosted in Self hosting my own Lemmy instance was so much fun

I’m running my own server on a linode. I’ve got it on the cheapest tier which is $5 a month. I’m not quite sure what I’m going to do when the 25GB gets full, I’ll have to find out the best way to delete old posts and pictures.

Keep the activity table on a tight leash.

ipkpjersi ,

Yeah, I’ve heard of people using cron jobs to automatically clean activity older than 3 days.

I’m not sure what can be done about image staking up a lot of space, I imagine that’ll take up a ton of space after a while. Not sure how that could be cleaned up safely.

SeeJayEmm ,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

I believe there are ways to prune the images store but I haven’t dug into that yet.

Wait. Like seriously? How old are you mate?

Diabetes type 2 is no joke and will change yoyr life for the even worse than it right now. Don’t waste your life like this even if you have a shitty situation.

If you have abusive parrents try to seek help from the police or other insurances.

I don’t know what country you live in but if its the US check this: www.acf.hhs.gov/fysb/programs/…/ndvh

I think you need to move out. And get your health in order. Diabetes messes you up very badly over time when not treated.

itsdavetho , to nostupidquestions in Deleted

I think the real question is what happens if you don’t independently seek therapy and remove yourself from this situation

Doesn’t impact my favorite shows since they were already wrapped up twenty years ago.

Mane25 , to linux in Was Fedora always so unstable?

Anecdotally it seems to be an unusually bad phase, lots of people reporting problems since kernel 6.3 ,then there was the bad ostree update (which I don’t think was exclusive to Fedora).

I have enough years of good experience with Fedora to know that’s not normal and confidence enough to stick with it.

Raphael ,
@Raphael@lemmy.world avatar

Last year Silverblue spent a whole month broken, the developers have no concept of rolling back bad updates.

Mane25 ,

Not for me it wasn’t, when was that?

Raphael ,
@Raphael@lemmy.world avatar

You probably didn’t notice, but you couldn’t install anything or update, rpm-ostree was broken.

Unless you fixed it manually, sure, there’s an argument to be had that way.

Mane25 ,

I was looking for more like a date and Fedora version number, there was a short period for a few months in August-September last year where I didn’t have an active Silverblue machine, but apart from that I’ve been running rpm-ostree upgrade on something on a daily basis for the last two years.

Raphael ,
@Raphael@lemmy.world avatar

It didn’t spew an error message, it failed completely silently. I was completely puzzled and wasted a day trying to figure out why I couldn’t overlay a certain package.

ASK_ME_ABOUT_LOOM , to selfhost in [QUESTION] Static IP vs Dynamic DNS?

I have a dynamic IP and have been using it for years. I also host my own mail server on a VPS using miab which provides my DNS. My router supports pushing DDNS changes, so as soon as my IP changes, I’m able to update my external DNS and everything is all good.

If you can reliably update an external DDNS service, I can’t see paying for a static IP for your self-hosted stuff.

Reva , to startrek in Why did Vic Fontaine sang entire songs in the later seasons of DS9?

I don’t know about you, but I cried during some of the songs. DS9 just started feeling like home, like these characters were my genuine friends. I loved just seeing them thrive and immersing myself in this world. For all that matters, I’d watch nine seasons of DS9: Operating Normally if it existed.

It might not have driven some kind of plot, but I am here because this universe is my happy place. I don’t care about some suspenseful plot.

DAC_Protogen , to linux in Does anyone actually like the default GNOME workflow?
@DAC_Protogen@lemmy.ml avatar

I must say, I have mixed feelings about it. When Gnome 3 replaced Gnome 2, I just hated it. It was missing features in every aspect, and the ergonomics were… questionable at best. Over time, modern Gnome evolved and since version 42, I think it’s a modern, pretty desktop environment. It is clean and readable on the eyes, looks fancy with all those animations, and there are amazing apps with almost minimalist approach, really useful, nicely integrated into a unified design language. I ran Fedora Silverblue for almost a year now, and it took me about 6 weeks to get used to the modern Gnome workflow. It’s just that different. And for a while, I even began to think that I really like it and that it might be my favourite desktop environment now. But lately… I just start to think that with a simple, traditional DE like XFCE, it would be way easier to manage many open applications and windows, and those fancy animations start to really annoy me. I think I have explored Gnome enough to now think that I prefer the oldschool way. I’ll be on something with XFCE soon.

Zozano ,

As much as I love XFCE, it isn’t ready for Wayland.

I just started KDE today for Wayland. It’s not as bad as I remembered it.

The fedora 37 and 38 livecd’s have a bug that prevents them from being bootable. So when I wanted to install fedora on my laptop I had to start with 36 then upgrade to 37 then to 38. No other distro has had this problem.

neuromante , (edited )

I had tough times trying to install fedora 38 kde spin.
