Well that’s a thumbnail I’d never click on

Their video about thumbnail A/B testing was quite interesting to see. Considering how they have dedicated designers to make these thumbnails I guess that works pretty well, despite your personal opinion on it, with which I agree too.

You have to understand shit like these thumbsnails arent made for people like you and me.

They are made for the mindless horde of sub-intellectual gremlins who are incapable of rational, independent thought. The kind that run out and put sandpaper on their windshield wipers and microwave their phones to “fast recharge” them because they saw a video that said to do that.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Unfortunately this is just the way it is on YT now. Post clickbait thumbnails, or miss out on hundreds of thousands of views. Because that’s the way YT likes it. They don’t want to positively weight long-term high-quality content, they want to promote clickbait.

ILikeBoobies ,

If someone cares about their view count then you shouldn’t give their content your time of day

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Quite the opposite. If they didn’t care about the view count the content wouldn’t exist in the first place. No one makes content with the intention of no one watching it, and they certainly don’t make high quality content that requires a team of people and expensive equipment.

ILikeBoobies ,

They make them because it’s fun/they are passionate

And that makes them higher quality

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

At a bare minimum they make them because they’re passionate about sharing with others. In which case they care about the view count. Once again, no one makes a video and uploads it to a video-sharing platform and doesn’t care who watches it.

Having the time and money to dedicate to making high quality content makes them higher quality. If they have to work a 9-5 doing something else, and they record everything on a Galaxy S4 because they have no money, it’s bound to be lower quality or just non-existent.

ILikeBoobies ,

All of their thumbnails are unfortunately click-baity. They spoke about ut in an older video. Apparently, the click-baity images drive too much traffic for them to justify something more subtle.

beliquititious , to linux in How can we make Linux more appealing as "just works"?

Software, 1,000%. I love linux and daily drive it. But when I have videos to edit, photos to rework, or collateral to design I have a windows laptop with professional grade tools to do the job.

I’m sorry, gimp is hot garbage. There isn’t a pro-grade, open source video editing tool or anything close. Inkscape is useable in a pinch. Scribus is useless.

Not everyone is a multimedia creative professional, but most software on linux never quite have the features you need, are no longer maintained, or will be useful in ten years.

That said, I’d still rather break out the laptop when doing client work than daily drive MacOS or Windows 11. Either way the barrier for most users is that linux almost works.

asap ,
@asap@lemmy.world avatar

There isn’t a pro-grade, open source video editing tool or anything close

Do you use open source professional grade video editing tools on Windows? Almost certainly not, so why would it be a requirement for Linux?

What we need is companies producing Linux builds of professional grade closed source software. And if the trend of Microsoft making terrible decisions and Linux use increasing, it might actually happen.

bigmclargehuge ,
@bigmclargehuge@lemmy.world avatar

This kind of opens up its own point: people need to accept that non-free software isn’t the devil. It actually can be really good for a community to have large entities investing real, actual USD dollars into it, and creating products and services that people want to pay for. It absolutely shouldn’t be the only option, FOSS is a beautiful thing and I love that the Unix community puts a huge emphasis on it. But, without some heavy hitters putting some money on the table, Linux/BSD will always be niche. They won’t go away, but they won’t blow up either.

BCsven ,

Gimp works really well, just that it is destructive editting.

As for the software not having features or not being useful, part of that comes down to: if a company offers a linux version make sure you use it. For a proprietary MCAD and PLM system from Siemens, we had a unix version, then windows, then when Linux was viable with support on SUSE and RHEL we had the exact software OEM aerospace and Automotive engineers used for design and management. Trouble is not enough companies used it to make supporting it a worthwhile effort, so they ditched the GUI desktop support. You can still run the few years old version. Maybe it will come back with Linux rising from 1-2% to 4.5% ; if that trend continues

Disaster ,

At least we have Bitwig for music production now (if you can work out how to use it… I still haven’t had the time :-/ )

Laser , to linux in Linux Directory Structure - FHS

A good first approximation.

So where in this setup would you mount a network share? Or am additional hard drive for storage? The latter is neither removable nor temporary. Also /run is quite more than what this makes it seem (e.g. user mounts can be located there), there is practically only one system path for executables (/usr/bin)…

Not saying that the graphic is inherently wrong or bad, but one shouldn’t think it’s the end all be all.

werefreeatlast ,

I’m gonna blow everyone’s mind… I have my Linux system in a relatively small 4gb drive, and my home in a 4Tb drive. I mount my 4tb drive to /home/me as someone already said.

If my SSD for my OS takes a shit as people say, all you do is install it again, change fstab to swap the home directory and you’re back in business like nothing happened. That’s like 10 minutes install time on a good SSD these days. The other guy who mentioned this, didn’t point this out. The idea of separating my home folder into its own drive didn’t occur to me for years and years of using Linux. Every wrong update I was there copying home like a total windows 11 noob. I also install my extra drives and shares on /mnt, that’s standard.

unexposedhazard ,

On debian when i mount an ftp server through my file browser it uses gvfs

This will mount it to /run/user/1000/gvfs/ftp:host=<IP>,port=<PORT>,user=<fpt-user>

Metalemming , to lemmyshitpost in msi

The only brand of computer parts i will specifically tell people to avoid

Baphomet_The_Blasphemer ,

Genuine question: Can I ask why?

I’ve had several components and even had a complete msi PC build in the past and never had an issue with them. I’m not a msi fanboy, nor am I saying buy their products, I’m just curious as to what’s the reasoning behind why you tell people not to?

Metalemming , (edited )

To start with, i am in no way saying you build is junk, or that you are likely to start having problems. If it already works you are likely golden

Im often the “tech friend” for a lot of people, so ive built about 20-30 custom systems, usually with an assortment of different parts, and so far MSI has been the cause of every single show stopper to date. Ill list a couple examples, but these were just my experiences, and i dont build nearly as many pcs as i used to, so they may be better now, ive just personally no longer trust them.

1 Built a system for my roomate with a high end msi motherboard. Told him to go with the newer gen processor it supported while we were at microcenter because it was the same price, and i assumed the board would have a way to update the bios without a processor in it, since it was a high end board, and this feature was already pretty common on most boards. I should have checked, because i was wrong, had to make another trip back to microcenter to exhange processors

2 wanted a white motherboard for a snowblind case (you should look this up if you dont know what it is, they are neat), and msi had the only pure white one available that was sub 1000$ at the time. I double checked before i left the store that the motherboard supported the ryzen 3000 series processor i was getting, and was able to update the bios without a processor before i left the store. Turns out, they pulled the bios that supported ryzen 3000 series due to bugs and never released it again, or updated the store page. Had to go back to the and replace it with an older cpu again.

3 guided a friend through building his own pc. Everything went super well, he was a natural, and we spent the rest if the night playing FTL. A couple days later he brought it to me because it would lose display seemingly at random until a hard reboot was done. Turns out the brand new msi 3080 in it had a faulty vram module, and it worked fine until that module was filled up, causing the display to cut out, but everything else continued to function as if nothing was wrong. This was one of the hardest to diagnose issues ive come accross to date.

Ive had one or two other issues, but those are the ones are the most memorable

beliquititious , to linux in Gentoo vs any other distro

The theoretical benefits of Gentoo or Arch are completely negated by the fussy nature of those systems. You have more control, but to get it you have to do a lot more work. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, just that’s the main difference between arch, gentoo, and a more streamlined distro.

Really it depends on what you want out of your distro. If total control is what you’re after, then gentoo is only the beginning of a deep k hole that ends in LFS and a ricing habit. Personally I like using my computer as a tool to do other stuff so anything more hands on than debian stable just gets on my nerves or turns me into a ricing addict. But I had to install gentoo to figure that out.

Gentoo is a filter. You either love it and continue diving or learn you want something else from your OS.

Whatsapp is the most common, as pretty much everyone here in the Netherlands uses it. I used to use Telegram, but nowadays I trust it less than Whatsapp and all my Telegram chats have moved to Signal. SMS is only there for backup and older people who don’t use other apps. And Discord is there for people who want their messages to never be read, because that app is a dumpster fire that constantly makes me miss messages.
