Eggyhead , to gaming in What's your favourite and/or least favourite gaming hardware?

DSi introduced region locking to Nintendo handhelds. I stopped buying them at that point. The next Nintendo system I bought was the switch, which was no longer region locked. The DSi kicked that off, so it might be my least favorite.

Favorite hardware is a much tougher nut to crack. Could be my first console, n64, or my first gaming apparatus, the Gameboy Pocket. But the PSVR1 blew me away and made me a little less into flat games. The PS5 has everything I love from PS4 onward (and does VR), and the Steam deck streams my PS5 from bed while also playing pc, retro, and Xbox games and being a full on Linux machine.

sleepybisexual OP ,

Oh. I thought older stuff was locked too. Aren’t nes/fc carts non compatible? I likely wrong.

Yea, lots of good hardware over the years

Eggyhead ,

Home consoles were region locked based on physical barriers in the slots that would block a cartridge from a different region. You could just extract those barriers and the console could play any cartridge from any region, though. Handhelds had been different, though. Up to the DSi, you could buy a handheld cartridge from any country and it would plug in and play no problem.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot , to retrogaming in What is the better game...The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy VII?

Ocarina of Time was the first third-person 3D game that I thought actually had decent controls. I didn’t play it too much because I didn’t have an N64, but after trying it on a friend’s system I spent years seeking out things like Soul Reaver, Beyond Good & Evil and the Dark Cloud games to get a similar experience.

FFVII was just the existing JRPG formula with Little Big Adventure-style graphics.

independantiste , to showerthoughts in Prank calls don't really exist anymore with caller ID and everyone sending unknown numbers to voicemail.
@independantiste@sh.itjust.works avatar

We just called businesses instead, during lunch time at school, since they don’t block unknown numbers. We were starting on algebra and they showed us how to calculate the radius the area etc. So to us it was the funniest thing to call a pizza place and order a 4-2x(12π) sized pizza or something like that. That and calling completely unrelated businesses and ordering a pizza also

MutilationWave ,

As someone who managed a ridiculously busy pizza place. Fuck you from the bottom of my heart. I’m convinced that job took years off my life from stress and the constant prank calls totally fucked up production.

Really though you were just a kid and couldn’t have known. But I cussed some kids out in ways they’d never heard.

__init__ ,

Can I get uhhhh boneless pizza

MutilationWave ,

Yeah yo mama was boneless for years then I added my bone to her hair pie.

sunniegoldie , to asklemmy in What is the worst IT setup you have seen at a company?

One of the worst IT setups I’ve encountered involved a company using a patchwork of outdated systems and manual processes. They had multiple disconnected applications for different functions—some were on-premises and others were in the cloud, with no integration between them. This led to data silos, inconsistent information, and a lot of manual data entry.

After researching for months, finally the company adopted an ERP system which has greatly improved their situation. This system eliminated the need for manual entry, reduced errors, and provided a centralized view of their operations, leading to better decision-making and efficiency.

Zahille7 , to asklemmy in what are your favorite condiment creations?

The Kinder’s fry and burger sauces are pretty damn good. They’re kinda tangy, with a hint of spice on the back of the tongue. Whataburger fries are really good in it.

I posted on another thread similar to this one, where I worked in a sports bar where we made our own Nashville hot sauce and that stuff was the bomb on our fries. Mixed with a little bit of ketchup (about 60/40) and it was absolute gold.

You can never go wrong with a ketchup/ranch mix. I’ve never tried the premade stuff, but Red Robin’s ranch mixed with ketchup is really damn good.

Professorozone , to science_memes in Can whales eat humans?

I heard a story a while back about A SCUBA diver that was sort of swallowed by a whale. He was allegedly all the way in, then the whale spat him out and he was only bruised. It appeared to be an accident. But if I remember correctly, the credibility of the story was in question.

Sooooo… not sure why I answered. Well I’m this far now…

kratoz29 , to nostupidquestions in Why do people complain about multiple streaming platforms existing?
@kratoz29@lemm.ee avatar

I don’t know man, it was awesome when you had pretty much what you wanted in Netflix then when they started to focus in their “original stuff” and losing content (and the competition rising) I stopped to bother with this trend and downloaded all my stuff with Softwarr

Nowadays all my streaming needs are very well covered with a single subscription, Real Debrid, which is cheaper than any streaming service and surely has more content than all of them, even combined… I use it along with Stremio and Kodi, which both offer a better UI than most streaming apps lol.

  • DS Lite: maybe it’s because it was my first gaming console I bought with my own money as a kid. But this thing is such a trooper. Looks beautiful clamshell and the battery some how is still good today, almost 20 years later. Works real well with game carts too!
  • GameCube: I’m such a sucker for Nintendo but this thing was so portable and had a phenomenal wireless controller if you had it. I loved this console and the mini disks were so fun until I lost my case full of them.
  • Switch Lite: I know this isn’t a common one but the weight and the power behind it is amazing to me. I’ve always wanted a super portable console that doesn’t weigh a lot. The regular switch hurts for me to hold too long even with grips.

Least Favs:

  • PS2 slim: this little shit barely worked. At one point the slim would stop working where I’d have to open it, spin the disk like I was pull starting a lawn mower. It also scratched half my disks for no reason. The OG was a tank.
  • OG DS: bulky pain in the ass. Felt like holding two GBAs glued together.

That thing was such a comfortable controller.

Switch controllers:

Hopefully, they will fix them for the second version because the drift is unbearable at times. I bought kits to fix them, but come on man

Dreamcast.

Not so much it was a bad system, Sega just abandoned it like hot potato. The controllers sucked though from what I remember. Really bulky.

Favorites:

  • Steam Deck. I haven’t been this excited for a console since the original Xbox. I play a lot of games that I would otherwise avoid on my gaming rig, and it’s excellent for traveling.
  • Steam Controller. This one was worth the effort to get used to, and it introduced me to gyro controls and paddle buttons. Also, it was integral to the Steam Deck’s control scheme design.

Least favorites:

  • Wii. There were a few good games, but the controllers sucked ass. GameCube was better.
  • Game Gear. Screen was a smudge-fest. Any kind of motion was super hard to see.
  • Gen 1 Xbox controller. That thing was massive and awkward.
