simin , to nostupidquestions in So how long until the Fediverse is monetized?

hopefully the cost of running it is not so much and all users chip in to a degree to keep it going.

AttackBunny , to nostupidquestions in how does my "neighbor" hear my private telephone conversations.

I’m going to agree with everyone else, and say check Bluetooth connection and yeah maybe even carbon monoxide BUT you say the house and their place are connected by a breezeway. It’s entirely possible that they can just hear you talking. Sound travels in really odd ways sometimes, and people talk louder than they think. Is there another room, on the opposite end of the house, that you can make calls from, to see if it helps?

hungryphrog ,

Can you explain the carbon monoxide thing? Like how could it cause this?

I hope with a smaller community you feel more able to start / contribute to quality conversations. You add value here. Reddit was easy to feel like your comments didn’t matter.

betterdeadthanreddit , to nostupidquestions in Why all of a sudden tech companies are not being favorable to their users?

We’re not people to them, just part of a product. Why do anything more than absolutely necessary to keep the money flowing in? Save a fraction of a penny on bandwidth, earn another fraction by selling more complete data and ad views. Multiply that by the number of users and if enough will tolerate it, somebody at the top can buy a shiny new yacht.

genoxidedev1 , to retrogaming in anyone here fancy themself some GameCube?

Super Mario Sunshine was my childhood game pretty much. Still have my Gamecube but no TV/Monitor that wants to connect to it or display anything.

Loved Sunshine. Got it for free from a Nintendo Power re-subscription promo (ya know, back when we got good things without having to fight for em tooth and nail lol).

I had a NP sub for a long time, I don't remember any free games. Maybe it came after because I had it during the NES/SNES era

Don’t use Bluetooth for a while and see what changes. Turn it off, tell your partner on the phone that you lost your earbuds and see if the neighbor offers you theirs.

Are you wondering if one instance can be spread across multiple machines? I don’t think that’s possible and seems unnecessary. I say that because spreading users onto more instances creates less load on the larger instances, not more. Edit: I guess you can scale instances across machines!

Andreas ,
@Andreas@feddit.dk avatar

Instances can be scaled across several machines. Here they're using multiple containers as their resource usage isn't high enough to require multiple machines yet, but it proves that it can be done.

Touching_Grass , to showerthoughts in If everyone moved to open source non-profit solutions, the tech industry would lose billions

I don’t know the solution but I do know that we’re losing what the internet was suppose to be.

I remember in the early days how we all thought it was insane and unethical to create scarcity in data.

We all knew data could be copied and shared almost limitlessly and so the internet was headed towards this new post information scarcity world were we could all collaborate and share information and knowledge and culture.

It seems like now we’re putting up walls everywhere and charging for access to every bit of data we can. I think as an online culture that we lost a lot of that early 00s mentality of what the net would be.

I feel like we dropped that baton and the newer generation is almost pro data scarcity.

redballooon ,

I remember the general feeling you talked about, and the insanity of the idea when DRM was introduced.

It seems we vastly underestimated the ideas corporations can produce and implement.

For a short while it seemed as if with AI the field would be leveled again, but then I was astonished how quickly the EU moved with regulations first and foremost to protect copyright.

designated_fridge , to nostupidquestions in Why all of a sudden tech companies are not being favorable to their users?

You are used to a time where money was essentially free for companies. Whenever they needed money, they could loan money almost for free.

As interest rates are up, that’s no longer the case and priorities have changed from growth to plugging holes.
