The meaning of words has nothing to do with how they’re formed. Big brain.

It’s almost like showerthoughts aren’t always as profound as they seem. Almost.

FairEmail: I hated reading email on my phone, till I found it. I was so happy that I already paid for it 3 times (optional!) just to give something back to the dev.

Waze: it belongs to Google now, but I like it much better because it's like a social network for navigation and maps. You can also edit the maps by yourself. Another advantage is that it shows speed limits and warns you about police while driving.

sketched ,

I also really like fairemail for it's privacy focused approach but often the formatting in emails looks weird.. e. g. Paypal is especially bad :(

What line did you use to verify the apk and what error do you get back? I’m on my phone, but if you still need help I can turn on my laptop and have a look

is gonna become the worlds richest person real quick

Unfortunately, no. There are zero scientists, chemists, engineers, etc., at the top of the world’s richest people list. It’s all capitalists.

MustardFish , to nostupidquestions in how does my "neighbor" hear my private telephone conversations.

My father had a really similar thing happen to him. First it was his stepmother and sisters, then my mother’s family, then the neighbor down the street with a wiener dog all spying on him constantly.

Turns out that they were getting directly into his brain from all the cocaine he was snorting.

boredtortoise ,

Damn that’s wild. Brain worms hidden in cocaine. They’re getting crafty

I disabled the Google app on my phone and my phone still seems to work fine

Buffalox , to android in What's the 3 apps that you can't live without?

#1 would be the phone app, pretty handy for calling people in real time. without it, I would probably have to carry a phone too.

#2 Would be SMS, these are quite handy for quick messages without interrupting something important.

#3 GPS maps, I have the most amazing sense of orientation, that basically guarantees I never end up where I’m supposed to, unless I have GPS.

You may take these functions for granted children. But back in the day, maps were something you had in the glove compartment of your car. Phones were something you had on the wall, with a long wire hanging out of them, to connect you to a wired network. Messages was something you send on paper, put a stamp on, and posted through the postal service.

Of course compared to back then, a smartphone has plenty more clever functions. Like the calculator, which we did either in the head or more complex calculations were done on paper.

But I guess these aren’t what you kids were looking for. But they are actually quite amazing, even if you take them for granted. ;)

Difficult_Bit_1339 , to nostupidquestions in Why does the infinity app still work with reddit?
@Difficult_Bit_1339@sh.itjust.works avatar

Infinity is going subscription-only in a coming update. The dev is just eating the costs until then.

Thioether , to nostupidquestions in Why all of a sudden tech companies are not being favorable to their users?

Combination of VC money drying up and fear of LLM sucking up their future revenue streams. I think the former is the the logical driver and the latter is the secret fear.

dreadedsemi , to nostupidquestions in What does the x/user per month mean?

Few people isn’t so bad. Common problem on Reddit was when a cool subreddit grows and immediately goes downhill.

Zelladore OP ,

That’s true. It’s gonna take some getting used to, I was hoping to see something similar to r/ProCreate with hundreds of posts with arts and tutorials. But it will probably grow over the next months :)

Right now you are not missing out on anything. Infact most apps are not fully functional yet.

Coherence , to books in What did everyone read in June?

•The Diamond Age - Neal Stephenson - 3.5. The book examines class consciousness through the lens of technology, interesting read

• Kiln People - David Brin. - 3.5 Disposable clay doubles and a private investigator’s attempt to get to the bottom of a mystery. Engaging and fun read

• Memory’s Legion - James S.A. Corey - 3. The novellas, and digital extras for The Expanse series. The Expanse is one of my favorite series. Most of the book’s material was included in the television series.

• Clans of the Alphane Moon - Philip K Dick - 3.5. PKD is always a wild ride!

• City - Clifford D Simak - 4 - A collection of stories about humanity and man’s best friend from present to thousands of years into the future. Really enjoyed this one

• Life - Keith Richards - 4 - “It’s Only Rock and Roll, but I like It!” Life of a rock and roll icon from early days to adulthood. The guy has lived an interesting life.

Knoll0114 OP ,

I have City on my (endless) TBR, good to hear it’s worth it.
