definitely weird, and when I say turtle my lips don't become a turtle. why not??

chunkystyles , to conservative in Is this actually conservative normally? Is it just being heavily brigaded right now?

“Brigaded” meaning just hearing other opinions and not being a completely insular echo chamber like /r/conservative, lol.

An instance/server is like an email provider but for your Reddit Lemmy account.

Fizz , to nostupidquestions in How do I make a community?
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

I just find and instance that allows you to create communities. Make an account on that instance then create the communities and make my normal account a mod. Because my instance doesn’t allow communities to be created and I like it to much to switch.

WigglingWalrus ,
@WigglingWalrus@lemmy.world avatar

What makes you like your instance so much you don’t want to switch?

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

Because nz is a small place and I like to rep it out in the world.

murrman , to youshouldknow in YSK: If you're on Lemmy.World or Sh.itjust.works you should not subscribe to any Beehaw communities
@murrman@lemmy.world avatar

Can you help me understand exactly how this will affect me? I actually have accounts on both lemmy.world and beehaw.org (I signed up for both when I initially found Lemmy and was trying to figure the whole thing out).

If I’m on my lemmy.world account, will I no longer be able to browse beehaw communities? On the flip side, if I’m on my beehaw.org account, will I no longer be able to browse lemmy.world communities?

Am I understanding things correctly? If that’s the case, then is the only solution to flip back and forth between the two accounts depending on which server the community I’m wanting to browse is on?

Rossel ,

Basically. You can browse them with the opposite account but you can’t interact.

SwallowsDick ,

So it’s like getting banned from a subreddit, except you can’t even browse with the same account after being banned?

NounsAndWords ,

Yes browse. No post.

Edc3 ,

If you get an account on an instant that isn’t involved in this mess like FMHY you can browse both without any issue.

pattmayne ,

I might have to go here. I’m already tired of defederation and its histrionic champions.

Holodeck_Moriarty ,

This was my thinking.

Is there an easy way to check if anyone has defederated from your instance?

Cheradenine ,

I use KISS on my phone, it makes one handed easy. I use Discreet on my tablet, nothing on my homescreen but, pull down for my favorites, all apps (except those I have hidden) are swipe up. People love Kvaesitso though, and it’s really good, just not for me. Probably in my perfect world I would use Discreet with something like Samsung Side Panels, but FOSS.

@Deathsauce@kbin.social avatar

Obsidian, Telegram and LibreOffice.

Gandalfthewhite ,

What is Obsidian and Libre?

JuicySchnitzel ,

Obsidian is a note taking app, LibreOffice is an office suite similiar to Microsoft Office.

Deathsauce ,
@Deathsauce@kbin.social avatar

Yup. Obsidian is a 'second brain' system development-like app and there's lots to it. It supports markdown, has a canvas where you can lay out and interconnect ideas and stuff. It's very customisable, it's just not open source. Libre Office, on the other hand, is a free and open source Microsoft 365/Office alternative.

disassembly , to showerthoughts in what if solar systems are synonymous to atoms in that they are the minute building blocks of something greater?

I'd say there's no "what if". We can already know that they both are and are not building blocks of something greater.

What are atoms building blocks of? Nothing. Combining atoms to form a parsley doesn't actually make anything new. Nothing emerges from combining atoms. There is no "parsley", there's just atoms.

Similarly solar systems form galaxies, they form galaxy clusters etc. But a galaxy is nothing but a collection of solar systems etc.

However, the direction of causation is not only from small to big. The big also influences the small, and actually also determines it. For example the position and movement of the small is influenced by the big. Its position and movement is what the small actually is, as being in a different place or moving differently it would be something else that what it is now. You can't separate a thing's position from what that thing is. And more fundamentally, a thing is its interactions with other things. Outside of its effects on other things, you can't observe a thing, and those effects are the only existence of that thing.

In that sense you could say that atoms and solar systems are not building blocks of bigger things, as there are no fundamental building blocks and no things that are built either. There is just a network of things, none of which exist as independent things other than mutually determining and being determined by the network.

Skelectus , to nostupidquestions in What does the x/user per month mean?
@Skelectus@suppo.fi avatar

I’m pretty sure it means the number of users that have posted or commented during the past 30 days.

DrQuint ,

I can confirm this but only empirically, as I know of a community where only like 4 people actually commented, but I know at least a few dozen looked at.

mizu6079 , to nostupidquestions in What does the x/user per month mean?
@mizu6079@lemmy.world avatar

it means x people have been active. As in they have commented or posted in the community in that month.

Zelladore OP ,

Okay thank you. I’m just surprised that it’s so few!

ashe ,
@ashe@lemmy.starless.one avatar

yeah, from my experience lemmy has way fewer but more active users compared to reddit

cybersandwich ,

It’s going to be interesting to see how Lemmy evolves and what impact this has on reddit. The engagement here and activity level of the users seems so much higher than on Reddit.

I wonder what percentage of “posters” came over verse lurkers.

What if reddit lost 50% of it’s posters and lemmy got them all?

Shialac ,

Yep… I still think the “Powerusers” - Mods and actually active Posters, creators of original content - were the ones most likely to use 3rd Party Apps and thus have left Reddit after all the shit that has happened

I noticed a huge drop in Quality in the last 2 Days on Reddit (and a rise of Alt-Right bs), lets see how it develops

For now I feel really comfortable here on Lemmy

zsnell02 ,
@zsnell02@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah that’s been my take too. Honestly, minus missing more OC, I like Lemmy a lot. It’s definitely starting to hit that Reddit-like feel to it

Crackhappy ,
@Crackhappy@lemmy.world avatar

This is exactly how Reddit felt before the great Digg exodus.

cybersandwich ,

I think there will be a natural constriction and consolidation in communities over the next few months.

It was almost like a landgrab with all the excitement and people creating communities. A lot of them were similar so they are diluted a bit.

I think, eventually, we’ll see people gravitate to one or two particular instances of <type of community here> and the other will close or wither.

I wish some of the Lemmy servers were more intentional about community creation though–to reduce the number of similar communities.

Zelladore OP ,

I get that. I hope you’re right so we can get bigger but fewer communities about the same topic

thurstylark ,

Do votes count as activity?

Personally, I would consider that too lurker-y to count, but I could see both sides of that particular argument.

Then again, I could get off my ass and go read the fuckin code… Is my reddit refugee showing?? :P

Adanisi ,
@Adanisi@lemmy.zip avatar

I don’t think they do, I see a lot of communities where there are more votes on a lot of posts than the active users count.

@mizu6079@lemmy.world avatar

BristolRambler , to ukcasual in Casual Sunday

I’m sitting here in my daughter’s room, while she had an absolute banger of a meltdown. But upside is I’m taking the time to research what it would take to self-host my own Lemmy instance. I like the idea of my own personal instance that I can then federate through, rather than my account being tied to someone else’s instance.

sideone OP ,
@sideone@lemmy.world avatar

I tried last week with an oracle cloud free tier and a Lemmy easy deploy script. It didn’t work but apparently the script has been updated now.

BristolRambler ,

Good to know, I did read that the docker instance is a right pain to setup, but apparently there is a nice ansible script. Would be a good excuse to learn ansible. 😄
