On the official app you would get notifications at certain milestones (1 upvote, 5 upvotes, 10 upvotes, 20 upvotes, 1000 upvotes, etc.).

You can’t do it on Lemmy unless you’re an admin but the Connect for Lemmy app has this feature.

What does defederating from Meta's Threads.net actually accomplish?

Afaik, whenever an Activitypub instance has defederated from another it has always had to do with some combination of bad user behavior, poor moderation, and/or spam. Are the various instance admins who have decided to preemptively block threads.net simply convinced that these traits will be inevitable with it? Is it more of a...

You can’t really follow someone until they’ve made an account. Threads has an option where you can go into settings and find a list of your Instagram following list. From there, you can make it so you follow certain people as soon as they join Threads. https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/8d8cb64f-ac65-4b4d-8d92-7135ab90b0e5.jpeghttps://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/dd63d2ce-72aa-46b2-87ab-6886f26dd13f.jpeg

Having all your memories of something good wiped completely is better than never being allowed to experience it again.

EDIT: I don’t think I conveyed what I meant well enough in the post. I was talking about something like, say, reading. It’s my favorite hobby. If I was forced to never read again, I’d be absolutely miserable. But if I completely forgot about reading, there wouldn’t exactly be anything to miss.

What’s the fediverse’s answer to email? And everything else we use?

The talk about “enshittification” made me think of the very email we use for the instances we signed up and instantly, it paints a grim picture. One of my account used gmail to sign up. Some proton mail. It reminds me that these too are companies beholden to their shareholders....

mizu6079 ,
@mizu6079@lemmy.world avatar

Email is already a federated system. You can host your own email service.

mizu6079 ,
@mizu6079@lemmy.world avatar

Yup. Or you can use something like Proton Mail.

Idea: Fediverse community/"subreddit" explorer (kbin.social)

A problem many have realized is that there are many /tech, /gaming etc. communities in different instances/servers. There is already https://fediverse.observer/ , so I think it wouldn't be too hard to make a service that periodically roams the fediverse, checks for example the last 100,000 submissions of each (or top 100 active...

8th message middle row; heterosexual relationships are the most common globally.

In my understanding of the main principles of the Fediverse, federating with any large corp should never even be considered. Is my understanding wrong? What is the "idea of the fediverse" to you?

There is one argument I’ve seen missing in most of the de/federation discussions, that I think should be mentioned, and warrants it’s own discussion....

mizu6079 ,
@mizu6079@lemmy.world avatar

I believe the point of Fediverse is making sure no big corporate decision can ruin the whole thing for everyone. Since a huge amount of people will be using the Meta apps, a bad decision will mess it up for quite a lot of people.

I personally like the new Threads app. Most of my friends use Instagram and this is a nice change from the reels and all that crap. But I definitely think it should not join the Fediverse.

My feed is now all those interesting people, places, & publications that I followed on over the years reacting & replying to celebrities & brands like Dunkin Donuts and fucking Paris Hilton.

Or worse, seeing celebrities & brands replying to each other.

Awesome. 😬

It doesn’t matter as long as:

  • Your instance isn’t defederated from too many big instances. (LW is defederated from beehaw.org so I have alternative accounts to view posts from there).
  • Your instance doesn’t have a specific topic that you aren’t interested in. (LW is a general-topic instance so that’s all good).
  • Your instance has good uptime. (LW often has issues with huge masses of users migrating over from Reddit).

It’s still a very good instance. If you want to switch over to a different instance, check out Awesome-Lemmy-Instances on Github.

From what I understand, LW users were posting lower quality content after a huge amount of Reddit users flooded into it and the Beehaw admins were tired of it so they defederated.

If beauty is tightly associated with facial symmetry, then why doesn’t everyone have their hair part down the middle?

Edit: to clarify, I know that many short hair styles don’t have a part at all. Mostly talking about people with hair long enough to have one. I find it interesting that many studies conclude that beauty is tightly correlated with how symmetrical someone’s face is. However, many haircuts and hair styles are asymmetrical,...
