Just out of curiosity, what did the devs do that was stupid?

porkins ,

The devs hold extreme political views. They are on board with the Tiananmen Square massacre being necessary and shit like that. Like this post says though, there are plenty of instances that are totally run by normal people. Additionally, the Lemmy server code is open source, so that helps to ensure that it isn’t doing anything nefarious behind-the-scenes.

More details in the link above, here is the introduction:

“My concern is that users are being banned and content is being removed on lemmy.ml citing a rule that is not publicly stated anywhere that I have seen.

Moderators of lemmy.ml are removing posts and comments which are critical of the Chinese government and are banning their authors.”

Lemmy feels as a aplha/beta product that we ar all testing right now. Nothing wrong with that, in fact, I like Lemmy more then Reddit. But you cannot expect everyone to love it right now.

For Reddit its clear: you sign up, you search for a community and you subscribe.

Here, you sign up (if you don’t get the spinning wheel). You search for a community. Oh, it is on another instance. What is a instance? Then you browse and see different Lemmy websites. You get confused, you heard something about Fediverse but what is it?

Also, there is no karma what important is for many users. Mod tools are extremly limited and all the apps you can use on mobile are in alpha/beta/in development.

There should be a easy to understand welcome page upon sign-up and I think this needs to be prioritized if we want to welcome (more) mainstream users. The post that explains how Lemmy works on c/lemmyworld doesn’t cut it.

bilboswaggings ,

Karma is important? The only “use” for it is to do what? users farm it so adding karma or something similar would just make this place worse

TheInsane42 ,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

In the r/CRSRacing2 sub (which I mod, kinda, until I can’t anymore) the karma is used to stop new joiners to ask the standard questions that are answered in the 1st post the get to see… (pinned)

But that’s about the only use I can think of. (other then useless bragging rights)

Derproid ,

Yeah but this could be solved with a slightly more complex bot that tries to determine if a post is a question from the FAQ instead of just blocking new users.

carl_dungeon ,
  • it can be used to differentiate troll accounts from people that make generally liked comments
  • it gives users a rush and encourages participation
  • it can help with ranking

Now, that said, there are ways to game those things too, but that’s the concept and some of the bigger benefits.

hatter ,
@hatter@lemmy.world avatar

I still receive PMs every once in a while from random people on Reddit thanking me for comments that I’ve posted years ago. Those comments have less than 20 karma combined. I also have a comment saying “Nice.” which contributes nothing and is sitting at almost 3000. Karma is meaningless.

Trying to play though ff16 but it’s so difficult because it’s so awfull.

It’s not ff, it’s not an RPG and the performance is terrible and the side quests are dull.

Im renting it and I may just send it back before even finishing it.

I am using OpenBoard as well. There even is a fork with gesture typing for the adventurous.

sneakyninjapants , to android in How does everyone feel about Oneplus phones?

Have a Oneplus 7 Pro, first Oneplus phone I’ve owned and it will be the last. Absolutely love the phone itself, but Oneplus as a company, the software they package, the warranty issues, and the direction they’ve gone as a value pick have all fallen off a cliff since it was produced, and have turned me off to ever upgrading to one of their newer models. That’s fine for me though, I have replacement parts on-hand, and a third-party actually maintained rom, so I’m OP7P until the wheels fall off this thing.

Edit: Can’t comment with experience on other OP phones, but I’ve heard very good things about the 6s, it was my second pick when I was looking for a phone at the time.

My podcasts fall into two groups:

Linux/Tech

  • Destination Linux
  • Late Night Linux and its brethren
  • Linux GameCast and its sister show LWDW

Urbanism

  • The War on Cars
  • The Urbanist Agenda
  • Strong Towns Podcast
  • Upzoned

They release on almost a daily schedule, so I always have something to listen to.

SteelCorrelation , to asklemmy in Visiting the US soon - do I really have to tip?

Here, unfortunately, YTA if you don’t tip. I forgot once and had the server run after me to make sure something wasn’t wrong. Some service folks take it personally if you don’t tip, which makes sense given that their employers don’t pay them shit. So yeah, you the customer foot the bill for ensuring these people can make ends meet… as if giving the restaurant your custom wasn’t support enough.

The problem is that, like most other industries here in the US, the system is rigged against the working class. While not all restaurant owners intend to fuck over their staff (especially smaller, local places), it’s how it works. Now, some places will automatically add gratuity to your bill under certain conditions, so check your breakdown to ensure it’s not already included. This is becoming more common, which irritates me since I scale my tip based on the quality of the service rendered.

Also, we know it’s expensive here. Don’t bother coming here to complain about it, we do it enough ourselves. Tipping is here to stay for now and I don’t imagine it changing for quite some time.

Stovetop ,

Just to add onto this good answer, you are really only expected to tip for sit-down restaurants with service and bars.

For takeout, cafes, fast food, etc., you don’t need to tip. A lot of places these have payment machines that just ask if you want to tip by default. You can safely hit “No tip” on these if you don’t want to.

Ostensibly it’s just to replace the tip jar for those who don’t use cash, but the prompt appearing every time you pay by card has convinced a lot of people that tipping is what you’re supposed to do in those situations, when in reality you have no obligation to.

ElectroLisa , to linux in KDE Wayland for Gaming
@ElectroLisa@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

If you’re playing competitive FPS games then Wayland still isn’t there, use X11 instead. Outside of it, I’d say it’s worth a shot, it goes especially well with FreeSync monitors.

Your experience will vary from your GPU vendor too. I have an AMD card so Wayland is a smooth experience for me, if you’re on Nvidia then you will most likely face issues.

I’ve noticed a bug where in GPU bound scenarios entire desktop is lagging. This issue happens for me on Wayland but not X11. I don’t know what’s causing it, could be my graphics card running out of its 4 GB of VRAM.

TL;DR give it a try, you can easily switch between X11 and Wayland.

marmalade ,

I would say the exact opposite if you’re playing competitive FPS. Xorg tears and is super jittery like a motherfucker. Wayland is the only thing that properly drives my 240hz monitor.
