digdilem , to nostupidquestions in Are there any Reddit refugees spending more time on Lemmy than Reddit?

About a week since i read or posted on Reddit.

Reading Christian’s rebuttal was genuinely shocking to me and I decided I didn’t want to continue supporting Reddit’s management by being associated with it.

I demodded myself (sole moderator of a 13 year old sub, plus another two smaller ones), deleted all my many thousands of posts and comments and stopped using it.

I’m planning on deleting my 11 year user with a lot of karma on the 1st to join the protest then (I need to revisit to check that’s still happening)

danielfgom , to android in How does everyone feel about Oneplus phones?
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t like them. I think they are trying to be Apple and I hate that because it means higher prices, fewer features. No headphone jack, no SD card slot, no dual SIM, high prices.

That’s not meant to be the Android way. Android is all about choice and options. That’s what I love about Sony, and why I have a Sony Xperia 10iii - they give you more: award winning design, sleek form factor, fantastic cameras, headphone jack, SD card slot, dual SIM, waterproofing, easily removable SIM tray, notification LED, battery care, long battery life, great OLED screen, NFC, HiRes audio on wired and wireless, MP3 upscale to improve music quality on MP3 tracks, great video recording (up to 4K on mine), support app built in, fast stock launcher will little bloat. I’m even a fan of the dedication Google Assistant button and use it all the time.

And the price was great because I got it on sale for just €350.

That’s how Android should be: options, choice, value for money

Edit: I forgot to mention that Sony allows unlocking the bootloader if you want to install other ROM’s like Sailfish, Lineage etc

Aceticon ,

Is it just me that reads “award winning design” and instantly mentally classifies a post as “likely marketing”?!

WTF is the value for a customer if their phone’s design has received awards?

I mean, does any genuine human out there choose the looks of their phone based on the awards it got rather than, you know, personally likeing said looks???!

Zaros ,
@Zaros@lemmy.world avatar

I stopped reading out of habit as soon as I got to the “award winning design” and “form factor”. Such marketing buzzwords are usually a good sign telling me that part of the text has no valuable information and should be skipped.

I hadn’t even noticed this habit and I have no idea when it started. I wonder what other subconscious reading optimizations I’ve made, and how they might impact the type of information I read without me realizing it…

Jajcus , to explainlikeimfive in ELI5: In computer networking, what is a port?

Additionally to all the correct answers, a 'port' can also mean something completely different 'in networking'.

It can be a physical socket in a network equipment, like 'Ethernet port'. Or it can be a virtual equivalent of such, e.g. when connecting virtual machines on a host - that could be called a 'logical port'.

Those can sometimes be used interchangeably with 'interface' or 'device', but it depends on convention used in particular system or environment.

scott , to selfhosted in What is the best selfhostable messaging service for family?
@scott@lem.free.as avatar

Matrix. With its bridges you can “wire-in” networks like WhatsApp, Slack, Signal, Telegram, Discord, iMessage, SMS, e-mail, … and have a single app that interacts with them all. You can have a single group chat with users from all those networks participating and no one would be any the wiser.

wgs ,
@wgs@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

From my experience (with Dendrite, not synapse, so keep that in mind), bridges create “fake” users to replicate your contacts on these platform as matrix users, and they are visible on the whole instance by all their users (but you might not be able to talk to them). Also, in puppeted mode (which is what you want to “replace” your app with matrix), only a single user can use the bridge at a time, so the other users cannot use it.

scott ,
@scott@lem.free.as avatar

This is true but if you’re self-hosting it’s not that much bother to add additional copies of a bridge for other users (granted, it’s not ideal).

wgs ,
@wgs@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Bridges were not that easy to manage in my case (regarding process management, and ease of config deployment/reproductibility). It was on OpenBSD though, so your mileage may vary. And still, it leaks all of your contact informations to the other users of the server (like their phone number eventually), so definitely not suited for public instances.

SirEDCaLot ,

Leaks contact information to the other users? Can you elaborate on that? I haven’t heard anything like that

wgs ,
@wgs@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

That’s from my own experience. I had a self-hosted matrix server running with Dendrite, and the mautrix-whatsapp bridge running. The bridge was running in puppeted mode, so upon synchronizing contacts, the bridge created “fake” users on the matrix server, one for each of my whatsapp contacts. The matrix username of these contacts is (by default) https://github.com/mautrix/whatsapp/blob/master/example-config.yaml#L105. And these users are visible (at least) by other users on the same server. It was my own instance and I was the sole user so I didn’t really care. But when a friend of mine wanted to try matrix, I created an account for him on the server, and when he joined, he could see all the fake whatsapp/telegram/discord users created by the bridge on the server. And as the default username includes the phone number, he basically had access to my whole phone contact list in real time.

SirEDCaLot ,

Very interesting.

github.com/matrix-org/synapse/issues/8969 This may be of interest- it’s basically the same thing. Seems that before that patch was merged, bridge-created puppet contacts would show up in searches.
Of course that’s for Synapse not Dendrite. So it sounds like Dendrite never applied that same functionality.

chinpokomon , to android in How does everyone feel about Oneplus phones?

I had a 6T and really liked it. Got an 8 Pro about the day they disabled the Photochrom filter. That really disappointed me, not because it had "X-ray" capability, but because it was an IR sensor and I was excited to see a world I couldn't see with my visible light spectrum eyes. OS updates seemed to degrade things. I hope their foldable serves them well, but I'm not even considering it since I don't think they could make a good multitasking OS. We'll see when they announce it.

anyone_yun , to linux in KDE Wayland for Gaming

I play exclusively on kde wayland and I am really happy with it, I don’t have to mess with anything and everything works. The only thing that comes to mind is that Steam isn’t wayland native so you have to set an environment variable to set scaling on hidpi screens. Other than that everything works really fine!

SecurityPro ,
@SecurityPro@lemmy.ml avatar

I set STEAM_FORCE_DESKTOPUI_SCALING=2.0 in /etc/environment

No, it’s a file in your computer, located at /etc/environment, you need to edit it and add the env variable I posted earlier

fredthefish ,

I think it is a great game - I’m loving the sandbox feel and the “anything goes” way of traversing the map, solving problems etc - but I admit it doesn’t have the same sense of wonder and immersion (I think?) as BOTW somehow.

It’s also the first time I’ve made use of any item duplication glitches (it seems like the only “fun” / non-grindy way of making use of the new building mechanic) so maybe that, plus being able to just fly around everywhere on DIY contraptions, has taken some of the fun / point out of wandering around the map 🤷‍♂️
