dr_jekell , to linux_gaming in How to install Minecraft on Linux Mint?
@dr_jekell@lemmy.world avatar

You have a few choices:

  • Minecraft launcher (official) - Allows you to play vanilla MC.
  • Prisim launcher - allows you to download & play mod packs from several sources (newer FTB packs have to be loaded up in the FTB app first before being imported).
  • FTB app - allows you to play basically any FTB modpack.

The first should show up in the software store and the second two have install instructions on their websites.

Halo CE, Halo 2, and Halo 3 are great. Then the franchise was purchased by 343 and everything since has been a soulless COD clone with a Halo skin… and a random RTS.

RightHandOfIkaros ,

343 didn’t purchase Halo, Microsoft purchased it from Bungie and then licensed it to Bungie, then transferred the license to 343 after Reach launched.

But other than that, you are correct on the other stuff.

averyminya , to asklemmy in What's your stance on "donating" blood plasma?

You lack the cultural lens of America. About half of our country governs from the perspective of “why should I?” with the most negative and self-preserving mindset possible.

Why should I pay for others healthcare, even if it means they pay for mine? Why should I donate my blood if it doesn’t benefit me?

Solve that problem by giving you $25-100 for your “donations”

ADTJ ,

100% and I’m sure you know this too but just to add to your point, I believe the US government spends more money per capita on healthcare than anywhere in Europe, so even under the “Why should I?” lens, the current approach costs individuals more because they have to pay for it in taxes and then also in insurance premiums, copay etc.

It’s not just for the benefit of society as a whole, “you” as an individual would also be financially better off under a socialised system.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The important part is that the individual people spend more per capita for worse healthcare, too. You, private citizen reading this, are worse off and are paying more than you would be with socialized medicine in this country. Pretty much no matter what level you’re at, too.

Coarse Salt. Add just enough water to move it around + a little dish soap and shake. Works like a charm.

madjo , to technology in Feels like so many tech bubbles are about to burst

We still don’t have the capability to play games in full native 4K 144 Hertz.

And we really don’t need that. Gameplay is still more important than game resolution. Most gamers don’t even have hardware that would allow that type of resolution.

13esq , (edited )

I remember when running counter strike at 30fps on a 480p monitor meant you had a good computer.

Modern graphics are amazing, but they’re simply not required to have a good gaming experience.

Buttflapper OP ,

Gameplay is still more important than game resolution

In your opinion*. You forgot that part. For lots of people, graphics are way more important because they want a beautiful and immersive experience. They are not wrong to want that. I respect that you feel the way you do, but I respect others who care more about graphics. I’ll even go so far as to say that I am of the same mind as you, I don’t care about the graphics much at all but there are some games where the graphics have truly wowed me, or the visual effects. For example two that come to mind, Ori and the will of the wisps, or No Man’s sky. Two very different games but absolutely crazy visual effects and graphics on high-end computers. Another game that I play a lot is World of Warcraft, gameplay is so damn fun but it’s hard to get any of my friends to play it because it’s so ugly, looks like a poorly rendered PS3 game. That horrible quality of graphics prevents people from even trying it

Most gamers don’t even have hardware that would allow that type of resolution.

This is because they refuse to innovate. Think of the DVD player. You think a DVD player costs a lot today? Of course not, there’s a million of them and no one wants them anymore. If they actually innovated and created drastic leaps and technology, then older technology would be cheaper. It’s not expensive to go out and get an RTX 2080, which is the graphics card I currently have. Is about 250 or $300 now, pretty damn solid card. If they actually innovated and kept pushing the limits, technology would accelerate faster. Instead they want the inverse of that. They want as slow growth in technology as feasibly possible, maximum amount of time to innovate, maximum amount of revenue, and maximized impact on the environment. All those carbon emissions and waste of graphics cards being thrown out

No idea what distro you’re currently using but generally you can install whatever window manager/desktop (gui) you want

For a tiling wm I’d recommend hyprland. It’s not the most stable but I’ve had minimal issues with it and it’s really easy to get started with. You can install it alongside gnome/kde I believe and switch between the two on login so if you break one you’ve still got the other

Bear in mind most tiling wms don’t come with much installed by default, you’ll need a bar and a launcher at least

Chozo , to games in Games like Splitgate? (Halo?)

I've been getting back into playing The Finals lately. Kinda similar to Splitgate, in that the mechanics are easy to understand and mastering them will yield you a lot of fun and victory. The movement is very snappy, there's a lot of variety in how you can play, and matches are relatively quick.

It's an objective-based shooter, so you won't win just by getting kills; you have to complete a specific goal before your enemies to actually win. So it's a bit like Overwatch or TF2 in that regard (kinda dated references, I know) in terms of goals and a player's abilities. And the gunplay feels very much like Battlefield, which would make sense because ex-DICE devs worked on this game, I believe. It's also got crossplay.

It's got a seasonal/live service model for cosmetics. The battle pass and any other MTX are all only for cosmetics, though; unlocking weapons/abilities can only be done through gameplay, with no skip mechanics. So no weapons, abilities, maps, game modes, etc can be bought with real money at all. Figured I'd mention, since I know that's a turnoff for a lot of people, but I've been enjoying it as a free player.

ouch OP , (edited ) to linux in VPS encryption

Thanks for the comments. I agree on the general consensus, that once an encryption key enters the VPS, the encryption is compromised.

However, I’m thinking more in practical terms, eg. the service provider doing just casual scanning across all disks of VPS instances. Some examples could be: cloud authentication keys, torrc files, specific installed software, SSH private keys, TLS certificates.

Lemmchen ,
@Lemmchen@feddit.org avatar

Modern CPUs have some RAM encryption features, but ultimately you’re running on hardware outside your control. Personally, I use full disk encryption (except for /boot) and unlock remotely via SSH, but that only helps against automatic scanning of the storage.

ouch OP ,

Do you use dropbear and manually input the password to unlock the LUKS partition, or have you scripted something to automate that?

Superproductivity is great for tasks. It can even sync issues with apps (Gitlab, Jira, etc.) Pair it with Obsidian or any note taking app and you can forget work todos outside of work.

For the windows users: Powertoys has bunch of utilities. Without this windows is unusable for me.

Turns out they thought ArcGIS cost the same as like Office or Acrobat, and they didn’t budget for it for the fiscal year that started 2 weeks before I started working.

Anyway, I’ve gotten pretty good with

great I had heard about superproductivity from techlore but I brushed it off

could you please tell what seperates it from planify though?
