sunbeam60 , to asklemmy in What are your best tips for finding quality stuff on AliExpress and similar?

The few times I’ve used AliExpress I’ve had expectations met in terms of product quality, exceeded in terms of customer support and disappointed in terms of promised delivery speed.

I don’t get the sense most people are any different.

Just finishing up Episode 4 of the Quake remaster on nightmare difficulty. Episodes 1-3 were challenging, but my god these exploding bouncy ball “spawns” in E4 are such rage fuel.

Only 3 more levels then I move on to the expansions. First time playing those, so looking forward to it!

atrielienz , to showerthoughts in I want an AI TV that blocks all forms of advertising.

The idea that AI would be used to prevent companies from making money seems a bit far fetched to me.

Beacon ,

AI doesn't require a company. There are already AI created by independent groups

atrielienz ,

In it’s current iteration, either you run a local model which has limitations that I think would prevent it from being used to this end (I don’t know that for sure, and am happy to find out if anyone does know), or you use a corporate one. Unfortunately corps seem largely to want to use AI to make money and one of the best ways to make money in the age of information is ads. There’s a reason they have become more and more prevalent despite the fact that so many people hate them.

sp3tr4l , to pcgaming in What is the best value, out of the box PC gaming solution?

The short answer is no.

The long answer is, you might, just might be able to approach slightly higher specs than a Deck for the same cost if you do a custom build, assemble it yourself and get some wild deals or get lucky with a used but still good component.

ThePantser , to showerthoughts in I want an AI TV that blocks all forms of advertising.
@ThePantser@lemmy.world avatar

Best chance it happening is by a open source app that you run on a shieldtv or HTPC and run your video through for filtering. Everything will probably be on a long delay so the video can be scrubbed. But this should be doable soonish.

sparky1337 , to pcgaming in What is the best value, out of the box PC gaming solution?

With budget pre builts, you’re usually sacrificing performance to an extent of cheap power supplys (that can blow up) and a tier or two lesser graphics unit for the same price as you would building it yourself.

Honestly, if you’re happy with the performance the steam deck provides then you should stick with that long enough to either realize your need for a purpose built desktop, or put it in a gen 2 steam deck down the road.

Huh, never knew this was where the RPG term spelljammer came from.

I’ve never run or been in a spelljammer campaign but have always been interested. I just thought they “jammed” together magic and age of sail ideas and that’s where they got the name from lol.

ladicius ,

The “jammer” in Windjammer is not associated with “jamming”, see my other comment.

iltoroargento ,
@iltoroargento@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Yeah lol looked that up myself, too. But when making sense of the RPG term in the first place, I relied on my then understood definition of jamm(ing/er).

tonyn , to nostupidquestions in Is this a triangle?

The term you are looking for to describe such a shape is technically “spherical polygon”. Triangles are impossible in speherical geometry since the sum of the angles would always be greater than 180°.

sudoreboot ,
@sudoreboot@slrpnk.net avatar

There is no rule that the angles of a triangle add to 180 degrees. It only holds true in Euclidean geometry, which this is not.

SkyNTP ,

There is no rule that the angles of a triangle add to 180 degrees.

I think this is debatable. If it was not, then the answer to OP’s question would be obvious, and this thread would be uninteresting. The words we use carry a lot of unwritten baggage.

jordanlund , to showerthoughts in I want an AI TV that blocks all forms of advertising.
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

It wouldn’t be a TV itself, it would be an extra box you feed the TV signal into for filtering, then out to the TV itself.

This has been done previously for language filtering with hilarious results. It was called “TVGuardian”, oh, almost 30 years ago now.

It translated “the Dick Van Dyke Show” to “Jerk Van Gay”.

dabaldeagul ,
@dabaldeagul@feddit.nl avatar

Here is a video (24:27) by Technology Connections talking about the TV Guardian. There’s also this video (20:59) by Ben Eater, who looks at the memory chip on the device to figure out how it works. It’s pretty neat, and I recommend both videos if you have some spare time.

Lost_My_Mind ,

To be fair, Dick Van Dyke is ALREADY a hilarious name. Not even sure how that made it past 1950s censors who wouldn’t let Ricky and Lucy sleep in the same bed, or Barbra Eden show her belly button.

Anticorp ,

Because it’s his actual legal name. It’s not some snarky name they created for the show.

KingOfSleep ,

Tell that to Johnny Felatio.

Anticorp ,

TiVo used to have a commercial filter. The networks sued them. I don’t remember who won. This was a lifetime ago for most Lemmy users.

IIRC “fuck” was skipped over entirely.
