Everybody in a PC community is going to go to "build your own" by default, but it really isn't the only option.

It is true you won't match the price-to-performance on the Deck, but if you're willing to go a bit higher you can try a few things. For one, you can try to buy used. I would like to see a PC in person before I do that, but there may be options, depending on where you live. The good news is that upgrading from a Steam Deck anything with a dedicated GPU should be a nice boost in performance, so you can go for entry level or older desktop parts. If you don't mind a bit of bulk or have a convenient place to stash it you can also skip the whole mini-PC space, which is typically sold at a premium, and just buy a big old tower.

And then there's laptops. Used laptops devaluate a lot, which means you can find decent entry-level laptops with 30 series GPUs that will still outperform the Deck by a lot for a few hunderd bucks. Again, I'd like to look at one of those before I buy, but if you don't care about the screen quality or the cosmetics there are some affordable used options out there. Just... check the noise when gaming, because some of those sound like a hair dryer on high power mode.

As others have said, it depends on your budget and specific use case, but if you're using a handheld as a console attached to a screen you should be able to cobble something more functional together. Just maybe not as hassle-free or reliable.

You could go for the 8600G/8700G APUs without a graphics card. This should give you better performance than the Steam Deck and the option to later add a graphics card.

I’ve added a screenshot of a german shop that sells these for 649€ without operating system:

I did not find any pre-built PCs with this CPU, that’s why I’m referring to this shop that does the assembly for the customer.

vortexal , to android in What Browser do you use on Android, and why?
@vortexal@sopuli.xyz avatar

I’ve been using Fennec F-Droid, which is based on Firefox. I mostly use it because I want a non-chromium based browser and Firefox and it’s derivatives have browser extensions on android. I chose Fennec F-Droid because, while I could be wrong, it seems to be slightly smaller and run slightly faster than Firefox.

Nytefyre , to asklemmy in What affect has capitalism had on your mental health?

Capitalism makes me view the world and society as manufactured. Nothing I buy brings me true happiness, because it is just a means to survive or bring some bare minimum amount of comfort. Nothing out there to watch, play, read, listen to brings authentic joy as they once did, knowing how much capitalism has affected all of those mediums.

I've had to watch my dreams and ambitions die on the chopping block, because they'd require a level of financial stability or requirement I'd never ever get to see in my life even now.

They say you should turn your hobbies into a job. Well to me, my idea of a hobby is to enjoy and to escape. To monetize it, would mean I have to let that toxic friend be more of a friend than I am already at a discomfort with being my unintentional friend in the first place.

I already have a very jarred and jaded outlook on everything in the world, thanks to capitalism. I even despise the word 'consumer' because that's a derogatory term to devalue people by, but we've come to accept it unfortunately.

And one day, I will be a victim of this capitalism. I am just one car repair or emergency visit away from wanting sweet release.

It’s a great show but it’s also all bullshit pretty much, it only follows the broad strokes of the real story.

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

If we’re talking about the HBO show, then calling it a documentary is just straight up wrong in the first place.

It’s a “based on real events” TV drama that never claimed to be a rigorous retelling of the catastrophe.

There are a ton of immediate differences to reality that anyone even vaguely familiar with soviet history would notice.

Renacles ,

I really wish they made that clear though, the show tries very hard to make you believe that’s the real story.

Maggoty ,

It was never supposed to be more than the broad strokes though. Even those were largely unknown in the West.

Trainguyrom , to linux in What is the most duct-tape thing you've done to Linux?

About a decade ago I was playing a game on Linux and the game crashed and took the entire DE with it. So I went to a different tty and started a fresh x desktop session and started playing again until the game crashed again (I was running a bunch of mods so it would crash every couple of hours or so) and still didn’t feel like rebooting so I went to yet another tty and started yet another x desktop session. I did this about 3 times in total before I finally went “I should probably actually reboot because this has to be making a bigger mess of things”

The German term “Windjammer” translates literally to “wind whiner” or “wind lamentor” as the crews of these ships were very unhappy when there was no wind.

According to Wikipedia, Windjammer is a term of English origin:

TootSweet , (edited ) to showerthoughts in I want an AI TV that blocks all forms of advertising.

A pet pieve of mine is people randomly sticking the term “AI” into a description of some particular tech solution.

You want ad blocking. (Which is based.) But you don’t want “AI”. If this can be done in a way that doesn’t qualify as “AI”, that would satisfy you, yes?

And using the term “AI” that way makes it clear you haven’t really thought through what you really even want in that feature. (Not that there’s anything particularly wrong with that, especially in a showerthoughts community, but it’s still kindof a “slaps me in the face” kind of thing.)

And the term “AI” is so imprecise anyway.

And particular kinds of “AI” are such a bubble right now. And that’s why everybody is sticking the word “AI” into random contexts for no fucking reason. But it’s also just a gimmick at best and a huge scam at worst.

And “AI” is inevitably bad about false positives and such.

I’d really rather see the word “magic” than “AI” in this context. Because at least that admits that this is an idle wish and not something you think actual real-world adult humans should be seeking venture capital to attempt.

I’m sorry for taking this out on you specifically. You’re definitely not the first person I’ve seen do this.

fubbernuckin ,

They have absolutely thought through what they want in terms of features and the features they described absolutely require machine learning as it stands today. I cannot think of any other methods to remove advertisements from objects in a live video feed like the pitcher mound example op provides.

TootSweet , (edited )

I cannot think of any other methods

Exactly. What you’re describing isn’t “AI.” It’s “magic.” And “AI” can’t do what OP wants either.

No “AI” solution we have any reason to expect we’ll be able to create in anything approaching the foreseeable future is going to be able to do anything remotely like this without ridiculous amounts of false positives and/or false negatives.

By false positives in this case, I mean things like not coming back from the cool little slideshows until a minute past the end of the commercial break or obscuring important details of the show having falsely “concluded” that it’s a logo or some such.

And I would have assumed “without a lot of false positives” would have gone without saying. If OP is comfortable with lots of non-ad content blocked/obscured along with the ads, then I’ve got a 100% guaranteed zero-false-negatives solution that’ll fit OP’s requirements without involving a speck of “AI” anywhere that OP can implement right now: turn the TV off.
