reddig33 , to startrek in In part because it reminds me of TOS:”The Cage”, I’m hooked on *The Prisoner*

It’s a great show. They tried to remake it a few years ago, but it paled in comparison to the original.

Be seeing you!

I love the crispy font! What font is that?

bluemellophone , to technology in Student dorm does not allow wifi routers

Using your own WiFi router also bypasses the wireless security settings to access the school network.

Some resources are only available while on the network (printers, access to library, academic papers, other student hardware). Now imagine a random person in a coffee shop next door had u limited access to these resources via an unmanaged access point.

Orbituary , to memes in Who ever thought it sounded good this way? I think it's because headphones weren't widely used back then.
@Orbituary@lemmy.world avatar

There’s actually a biological reason for this, believe it or not. Language and music “time share” many characteristics of both hemispheres of the brain. Language and music are processed in different hemispheres.

Read pages 20-26 of the book “How Music Really Works” by Wayne Chase. It breaks it down in detail.

@VanHalbgott “Dr Sleep” by Stephen King. Last read his books decades ago and nice to be reminded how good a writer he is. Also reading “Swedish Essentials of Grammar” by Viberg, Ballardini & Stjärnlöf which is not quite as gripping.

Fox , to memes in Who ever thought it sounded good this way? I think it's because headphones weren't widely used back then.

What’s interesting is just how different the quality was of some of the stereo releases vs the mono bounces. For an example, the stereo HDCD version of Pet Sounds is a little wack, but even if you joined the two channels to mono it sounds a hundred times better than the shittastic mono release. Got to wonder if they optimized it for AM radio play the way that similarly awful sounding releases in the early 2000s optimized for iPod earbuds.

teuto , to fediverse in Instance admins, how much does it cost you to run your instance? How much does that represent per active user?

For my single user instance, I can be charitable and say that it’s running on hardware that I already had that is running regardless on spare otherwise unused resources with a already registered domain so the only cost is time spent setting it up. Or I could apply all the costs from the server Lemmy, then it would be about $1200 initially plus ~$10/mo per user.

Codilingus , to selfhosted in Pihole on gateway device?

Not sure if it’s exactly what you’re after, but Unifi gateways can install NextDNS with a script provided by NextDNS. It’s all the same lists as Pi-Hole, and possibly more intelligent ones, too. Bonus points are it makes every device in your home use encrypted DNS, as well!

I’m using it on a Dream Machine Pro, and the new Cloud Gateway Ultra.

Burn_The_Right , to nostupidquestions in Why are doctors so hands off and unhelpful in the USA?

U. S. medicine is corporatized. You are visiting a corporate store front, not a doctor’s office.

If you want personalized medicine from doctors who give a shit, you’ll either need to find a small clinic that gives a shit or you’ll need to get your procedures done for cash while on vacation in Europe.

Medical tourism can sometimes be the same price (including travel) as staying in the U.S and dealing with insurance.
