rand_alpha19 , to asklemmy in Can anyone name some mysteries in stories where the answer ended up delivering and was better than the mystery itself?

Maybe not the best example, but The Prestige was very fun. I thought the reveal was worth waiting for, it sort of felt like a whodunit.

pcouy , to selfhosted in Open-source and self-hosted enterprise?

I can recommend some stuff I’ve been using myself :

  • Dolibarr as an ERP + CRM : requires some work to configure initially. As most (if not all) features are disabled by default, it requires enabling them based on what you need. It also has a marketplace with a bunch of modules you can buy
  • Gitea to manage codebases for customer projects. It can also do CI but I’ve not looked into it yet
  • Prometheus and its ecosystem (mostly promtail and grafana) for monitoring and alerting
  • docker mail server : makes it quite easy to self host a full mail server. The guides in their doc made it painless for me to configure dmarc/SPF/other stuff that make e-mail notoriously hard to host
  • Cal.com as a self hostable alternative to calendly
  • Authentik for single sign-on and centralized permission management
  • plausible for lightweight analytics
  • a mix of wireguard, iptables and nginx to basically achieve the same as cloudflare proxying and tunnels

I design, deploy and maintain such infrastructures for my own customers, so feel free to DM me with more details about your business if you need help with this

HTTP Hypertext Transfer Protocol, the Web
VPS Virtual Private Server (opposed to shared hosting)

jaggedrobotpubes , to linux in How can we make Linux more appealing as "just works"?

Thank you thank you thank you for posing this question.

This is the biggest issue by far with open source stuff in general, and as a non-programmer who wants to use more and more of it, user unfriendliness hamstrings so much.

I don’t know the answers but I can tell you for a fact that if open source in general is serious about broader adoption, this needs to be occupying 50% of everybody’s open source discussion time, at least.

What I know is the standard “fuck you read my 19 pages of 1s and 0s” is the wrong answer.

Maybe good design is just really hard. I don’t know, I’ve never tried to do it. Seems like the sort of thing that might take three thousands iterations.

Other wilds as already suggested Is a must play. But a strong second contender for me Is cocoon. Logic/environment puzzles, with no hand holding in any way, you have to figure out everything but the level design Is sooo good.

Honorable mention for Tunic.

Pacmanlives , to linux in Is Linux (dumb)user friendly yet?

Well since your building a computer your more tech savvy then most people. I have been using Linux for about 20 years now. If you pick something like Linux Mint or others make sure you have a solid /home partition and migrate to what’s ever distro you like most. It allows you to move around and not lose your data.

Worst case you do some distro hopping for a little bit and then install Windows and there is nothing wrong with that. I have a windows laptop for the very reason that Windows works best with certain apps just like I use a Mac for video editing

The crossbow suddenly doesn’t look as good when your pavise shields are still stuck in the wagon train and you’re in range of the English longbowmen.

luciferofastora ,

Are you suggesting that rapid offensives - lunging out beyond your logistical network without taking the time to have your auxiliary force fully equipped for the task you expect of them - are a bad idea and will lead to said auxiliary forces putting in but a token effort instead of dying for an ally that clearly doesn’t give enough of a shit about their lives?

Microsoft uses some of these. I remember having to do something like that to setup a minecraft account and at some point I thought I would just give up and lose my money.

OpenAI uses these. I used to have the pro subscription, yet they asked me to solve 10 of these for every other request. Needless to say, I’m no longer their customer.

toastal , to linux in How can we make Linux more appealing as "just works"?

More appealing? Linux runs basically all server infrastructure where even Microsoft bent the knee for Azure & Windows Subsystem for Linux. If we are talking about Desktop Linux, it will remain popular with those building software for easier/better dev tooling & wanting to better understand the systems their production code is run on. As software becomes more intergral to our lives & knowing how to write/debug it rises, folks will slowly keep trickling in as the have for decades where more & more software is treating Linux (& the web, & since BSDs, et al. are running similar software such as GTK they are also included) as a primary target. The other desktop OSs continue to shoot themselves in the foot injecting ads into the OS or denying system-level access to the machine you own.

A would say a better focus is mobile Linux… as casual users have migrated away from desktop OSs, where Android & iOS’s walls are holding them captive.

aluminium , to technology in Linus Tech Tips uploaded a video showing how to block ads on Youtube. Which was removed by Youtube for community guidelines violations.

I don’t care for Linus these days but respect for that.

ours ,

Yeah, I got tired of his videos half-assing the work and the failed reviews hurting small manufacturers while Linus doubled down after GN documented their failures.

But this I can get behind.

dev_null ,

Doubled down? After being called out they slowed the upload cadence, are taking more time to make sure mistakes don’t get through, and changed their production process. They also formed a volunteer team of “beta tester” viewers who see each video pre-release to catch any mistakes they didn’t internally. I think they handled it well. Of course it would be better if they didn’t have a problem in the first place, but I’d never call it “doubling down”.

ours ,

Not initially. Linus mouthed off as he likes to do on his own podcast before eating crow after GN reinforced their claims.

r_se_random ,

There was an initial reaction from Linus on his forums where he massively doubled down on his stance that he had not done anything wrong with the review model LTT had auctioned off without permission (I can’t remember the name of the company). He had even accused GN of not following “journalistic standards” by not giving LTT a chance to put their side forward.

This was met with another video from GN, and overall criticism over the dismissive attitude Linus was displaying. That’s when they came out with a YT video, admitting their numerous faults, and Linus himself admitted that the way he responded on the forum was not acceptable.

Pretty much doubled down initially, till they realised that they’re in actual deep waters.

dev_null ,

Fair enough. Still commendable for taking the heat himself without ever mentioning which employee made the mistake with misallocating the review item to the charity auction.
