Tyrangle , to nostupidquestions in Why is there so much hype around artificial intelligence?

This is like saying that automobiles are overhyped because they can’t drive themselves. When I code up a new algorithm at work, I’m spending an hour or two whiteboarding my ideas, then the rest of the day coding it up. AI can’t design the algorithm for me, but if I can describe it in English, it can do the tedious work of writing the code. If you’re just using AI as a Google replacement, you’re missing the bigger picture.

Kintarian OP ,

I’m retired. I don’t do all that stuff.

Tyrangle ,

A lot of people are doing work that can be automated in part by AI, and there’s a good chance that they’ll lose their jobs in the next few years if they can’t figure out how to incorporate it into their workflow. Some people are indeed out of the workforce or in industries that are safe from AI, but that doesn’t invalidate the hype for the rest of us.

FourPacketsOfPeanuts ,

Maybe look into the creativity side more and less ‘Google replacement’?

Kintarian OP ,

The hype machine said we could use it in place of search engines for intelligent search. Pure BS.

FourPacketsOfPeanuts ,

Yes. Far more useful to embrace its hallucinogenic qualities…

Kintarian OP ,

I’ll see if I can think of something creative to do. I was just reading an article from MIT that pointed out that one reason AI is bad at search is that it can’t determine whether a source is accurate. It can’t tell the difference between Reddit and Harvard.

FourPacketsOfPeanuts ,

Neither can most of reddit…

bhamlin , to explainlikeimfive in ELI5: Why is cheating in online games seemingly so prevelant?

Because they’re online? Not everyone is playing the same game. There’s the same cheating in offline games too, but that’s not as visible.

how do people feel about .ee?

chatokun ,

Don’t even know what it stands for. I don’t recall feeling a strong specific vibe from .ee people. By vibe I mean, I see a lot of people from that instance giving a vibe. Explaining it is complicated, so I won’t try, but based on some instances I feel there is a general feeling of how users may feel about certain topics, but .ee isn’t one I have any baseline for.

tnarg42 , to nostupidquestions in Is the Video Download Helper companion app safe on Firefox?

I’ve used it off and on in KUbuntu for a couple of years without issue, installing the helper app from the .deb file directed to me by the plugin. I have scanned it for viruses and watched for strange behavior, and I haven’t observed anything suspicious. It runs as the current user, no elevated privileges required.

Arch Linux is the same as the last time I was in the hospital with my babies and I was wondering if you were going to be able to get a new one.

Well, in some cultures, if you’re not cheating to get ahead you’re considered a sucker.

intensely_human ,

I myself don’t cheat, but aside from hacking the actual code, I don’t think it’s cheating to do anything the game’s mechanics call for.

Most notably, I hate when people complain about spawn camping and snipers dominating.

My philosophy is: figure out a strategy to oppose that strategy. And avoid letting your spawn get overrun.

There are assholes I really hate though. Two experiences that really ground my gears were:

  • Getting my bed surrounded by lava, in Minecraft multiplayer
  • Getting boarded by a galleon crew who spawn killed us repeatedly on our sloop, without ever sinking our ship, in Sea of Thieves

I don’t mind being beaten, but being tortured is a whole new thing IMO.

Is this not contradictory?

Disclaimer: I’ve never played Sea of Thieves.

Eiri ,

All of those issues sound like things the game developers should figure out solutions to. If there’s a boring behaviour that results in boring gameplay and people can’t do much against that unless they have overwhelming skill… Yeah sounds like a problem that they need to solve somehow.

Because games should be fun.
