Durandal , to retrogaming in What second generation console do you like the most? (Atari 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision, etc.)
@Durandal@lemmy.today avatar

Atari 2600 because it’s the one I got to play the most and having video games outside of the arcade was mind blowing.

I never had a Vetrex but I would see them and always wanted one. Still do lol.

Not a “console” per se… but in that time frame… Commodore vic 20 or 64 would probably have been my most played games.

where_am_i , to piracy in Does anyone consume scene music?

ITT: a collective beating up of the OP.

btw, OP, I pirated like half a terabyte of FLACs (and when not available mp3s) back in my days. And also never heard of this term. Sounds like you’re just a bad pirate.

Prewash_Required , to retrogaming in What second generation console do you like the most? (Atari 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision, etc.)

I like ColecoVision best, but it had an unfair advantage, coming out a full 5 years after the 2600 and 3 years after the Inty. It’s really generation 2.5, competing with the 5200. But man, those arcade ports were so impressive, and the expansion module to play 2600 games made it the best of both worlds.

SexualPolytope , to selfhosted in Anyone with problems with duckdns DynDNS?

I’ve heard many people complain about DuckDNS. Personally use desec.io for DDNS and it’s been solid.

AceFuzzLord , to asklemmy in What's A Piece Of Software You Could Never Do Without?

On my laptop/desktop, for now I’d say Strawberry Music Player because I like playing/listening to the audio files I’ve stored locally on them.

For my phone, it’s currently Auxio for the same reason.

These are subject to change if I find something better.

bruhbeans , to linux in Encrypt whole system?

How old are we talking? If the CPU is >10 years old and/or some kind of ARM, it may not have hardware encryption acceleration, which means it’ll happen in software. I did that once, it was horrible. lscpu |grep -i aes should probably tell you what you need to know.

thepiguy , to linux in Encrypt whole system?

Maybe systemd-homed is the solution you are looking for. The arch wiki has a page for it. And this can be better for your use case because only your home folder needs decryption and not the whole drive.

There is this to keep in mind since you are using KDE, but can be easily fixed: wiki.archlinux.org/title/Systemd-homed#Home_direc…

brown recluse

You’re now banned from !spiders

Litany ,
@Litany@lemmy.world avatar

Memes aside, since I’ve been on the internet long enough to know that this could legitimately be the first time someone’s seen this information:

A brown recluse is a real spider endemic to the central United States. They are small, slender, and brown. Their bites are venomous and can require medical attention. In rare cases they can potentially be lethal, especially in young children.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_recluse_spider

tobogganablaze ,

Thanks for that!

To expand more on the meme side: It’s a notorious problem in spider communities that every brown spider will at some point be called a brown recluse by … less educated people. Which can lead to innocent spiders being killed just for their skin colour! Which is why there are usually rules that prohibit layman from identifying medically significant spiders.

The spider in the picture is a tarantula, so very obvious not a brown recluse. That’s the joke. It’s funny here, but seriously don’t make that joke on an actual spider community, none of the residents will think it’s funny.

SARGE ,
@SARGE@startrek.website avatar

I would like to know the inside joke, but I also don’t want to look at a bunch of pictures of spiders…

I’m not arachnophobic, but I’m also not a spider voyeur, and am perfectly okay with them staying in their corners of the house while I stay in mine.

So uhhhh… Can someone explain the joke I’m too scared to try and understand? I assume it’s in the same vein as "the MELTdown " on the reddit grilled cheese page

InAbsentia , to nostupidquestions in How do I alleviate bitterness due to lack of intimacy?

You’ve got to cast that shit out my man. Bitterness is a poison and will only turn you on yourself or others. I’m not in that situation but you have to look at things as if you haven’t met the right one yet. I won’t tell you to lower your standards but maybe consider trying to find the beauty of a person in a different light. Their intelligence, humor, mannerisms, there’s so many aspects of people to hate and appreciate.

Look at it this way, it’s hard to meet people these days. You go to parties, and find people that go to parties. You get on any dating sites? Chat rooms?

solsangraal ,

stop making goals for the summer. in fact, stop making goals period

“goals” is annual planning bullshit and should not be any part of your life that you’re not getting paid for

now that “goals” are in the toilet where they belong, make plans for your life instead of goals. plans can be changed, can have backup plans, and don’t have to meet your employer’s bullshit rubric for success. if your plans don’t necessarily include staying where you are, then they don’t.

fuck goals

The most mind-blowing moment I’ve ever had was the course Relativistic Electrodynamics.

If you assume static electricity (charges attract or repel), then apply special relativity to see what the situation looks like to an observer travelling by, you get magnetism!

Turns out half of Maxwell’s laws is a direct consequence of the other half once you know about special relativity.

ArbitraryValue ,

Vitamin deficiencies are easy to detect and to treat, and there’s no sense in spending months or years hoping to find the right anti-depressant before checking for them. Heck, I wish my issues were caused by vitamin deficiencies.

racsol ,

How are vitamin deficiencies detected? Some specific blood test?

ArbitraryValue ,

Yeah, I think it’s something a GP will prescribe.

Zwiebel ,

Your doctor sends your blood sample to a lab and ticks the ‘B12’ box on the printout form

shneancy ,

i know you’re joking but fuck, sometimes it do be like that.

Obviously nobody should infantalise people suffering from depression by telling them to “just be happy”, “go outside” etc. but if you’re malnourished, have vitamin deficiencies, don’t go out to hang out with the human tribe, and sit in your home the entire day without moving - you’re going to feel like shite. Fixing those problems won’t cure clinical depression, but the other way round is true too - getting meds for depression won’t cure you of feeling like shit if you don’t use the chance they give you to try to improve your life yourself.

imPastaSyndrome ,

It’s not always someone saying - it’s definitely these and anyone who is depressed just isn’t taking these, it’s literally just a kind and actually possible and helpful suggestion
