then_three_more , to nostupidquestions in Why do boomers hate squirrels so much?

Not a boomer, but as a Brit - the grey squirrel is an invasive species which has pretty much driven out the native red squirrel from most of the country. They also cause damage to trees through bark stripping.

JadenSmith ,

I’ve known this for a while, however I do not wish harm to grey squirrels. This is their war, I don’t even know the first thing about squirrel warfare, although I do hope the red squirrels find an alliance to support their freedoms.

SexualPolytope , to nostupidquestions in I think I am socially ostrasized, what should I do?
@SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Getting a job won’t make things easier. Most people need human friends to live a fulfilling life. I think you might be imagining that people dislike you, as we socially awkward people often do. Just try talking to people, and you’ll surely make a few friends. I’m socially awkward, but make it a point to attend some social gatherings outside of classes/job so that I’m basically forced to talk to people, no matter how hard it is. If you’re just starting university, it’ll be easier as everyone is trying to make friends, and there’ll be many open events. For later years, it might be a bit harder, but try joining some clubs. I’ve found astronomy clubs to be pretty chill and welcoming to new members.

Just make it a point to attend some social events. There will definitely be people who will appreciate your personality, just give them the chance to get to know you.

(All of this is assuming you don’t have some underlying mental condition. If you find it hard to follow this advice, maybe seek help from a professional.)

bobs_monkey , to asklemmy in Are you self aware of different types of hungry?

Honestly I think it’s more of just becoming responsible as you age and your body’s requirements get more specific. When I was young, I could eat anything and anything. Now, dairy is fully off the table, breads and carbs in general need to be of a minimum quality, and volume of consumption absolutely cannot be what it used to be. I think the key of it is to just be cognizant of what works and what doesn’t, and have the self control to direct yourself to the right choices (especially when options are limited). It certainly comes with experience that aging provides. I’m sure there are some people that are so well tapped into their bodies that it’s automatic like muscle memory, but for the rest of us it’s definitely learned and steered.

Kebab case with Pascal case in the usual places. I’d change to all kebab case but the muscle memory of typing Documents would nearly kill me.

solrize , to nostupidquestions in Is there a house advantage in a "double-or-nothing" coin flip game?

If both players have infinite bankrolls, but only one of them is allowed to stop the game once they are ahead, the one with the option of stopping has an advantage. They can play until they are in the lead, then stop. The reason this doesn’t work in real life is that real bankrolls aren’t infinite.

And, in real life, the house has a much larger bankroll.

HandwovenConsensus OP , (edited )

I don’t know if that applies to this scenario. In this game, the player is always in the lead until they aren’t, but I don’t see how that works in their favor.

solrize ,

Oh wait you mean the player has to stop if they lose? That’s different.

Seems like it’s happening to me, too. Don’t know how accurate it is, but I do seem to be craving certain types of food.

Schlemmy , to selfhosted in Any non-tech-background self-hosters?

No background but I can read and listen. There are plenty of resources around.

I started out of privacy concerns and I wanted to deGoogle It started this year with a RPI and pihole. Then I saw Mealie, bought a domain, and started sharing recipes with my family.

At first I messed around with Casa OS. It’s like a gateway drug. So easy to use and get stuff running.

Last week a 2nd hand i5 arrived and now I moved everything to proxmox. The RPI is still running pinhole. At the moment I’m setting up Immich and I’m thinking about buying a NAS.

Since it is a new hobby I keep everything low cost. If it sticks I’ll invest in a proper home server.

subtext ,

De-Googling was what got me started as well. Wanted to be able to have my own Google Drive clone with Nextcloud. From there it was just one little improvement / additional service at a time as I learned to use Linux and docker. Now I run a Linux laptop and am considering an android phone.

Engineering background for reference.

ArbitraryValue , to asklemmy in Are you self aware of different types of hungry?

I occasionally get into a state where I feel hungry but the thought of eating almost any food, including foods I usually like, is disgusting. I end up eating something really bland, like raw tofu.

Also, I didn’t have any cravings after I became a vegetarian. I was never seriously tempted to eat meat. However, I did eat a lot of cheese and now that I eat very little if it, I want cheese all the time. I’m not even hungry right now and I’m still salivating because I’m thinking about cheese.

Yeah, the most prominent is actually thirsty.

More often than not when I feel like I want some kind of unhealthy throwaway snack I’m actually just thirsty and the craving goes away if I drink water.

Hunger and thirst are very easily confused.

Today ,

I think this is my issue. I’m really trying to learn to drink when I’m thirsty and eat when I’m hungry. I forget to drink and then end up with headaches and leg cramps.
