The ad industry is truly one of the most reprehensible and insidious things humans have ever invited unto themselves. It’s beyond dystopian how much of our ability to move through the world is now contingent on us allowing our brains to be bukkaked with ads that are designed specifically to bypass our rationality and embed themselves in the very fabric of our beings like psychological rootkits.

I believe conspiracism is the root of all evil. But ads are gaining on conspiracism like they’re Usain Bolt being chased by an angry bee.

I have to hand it to those soulless fucking devils though, they might have pulled off one of the most brazen but successful mindfucks I’ve ever seen: they convinced lots of people that seeing ads about topics they were interested in was some sort of concession from the ad industry, like they were begrudgingly implementing measures to make ads “relevant” to us, and that we were somehow gaming the system because of it. It was a “win” for us to have the ads being served into our eyeballs and ears be tailor-made for us. “I’m so sick of seeing ads for products I don’t even care about! I wish there was a way to make the ads be relevant to ME” said no cunt ever. But they managed to convinced us that everyone else was saying that, and that we’d won some sort of victory against them to have their advertising have the precision of a sniper rifle, versus what it was before, like some sort of shotgun fired from 150 feet away in the dark.

An entire species of marks.

paraphrand ,

But, but, how will people know about our product?!😩

AndrewZabar ,

I have been using adblockers for decades already. And it’s been that long since I had to see ads. Occasionally some site will have some way of it getting through but even then I have the plugin scan and it sometimes can start blocking it. Essentially, my internet has been 95% ad-free and frankly I am surprised when I encounter anyone who doesn’t do the same.

Uli ,

I’ve used an adblocker for ages as well, though I do wish content creators on YouTube could get some passive non-membership revenue from me without me having to disable my adblock and look directly into the Ark of the Covenant. I could get Premium, but at that point, I feel like I’ve negotiated with a terrorist.

AndrewZabar ,

If they have a Join in addition to subscribe that directly gives them revenue (of course not until after YouTube has taken like 80%). Also always see if they have a patreon account. I occasionally contribute to some very talented people.

I feel your vitriol and agree with it 100%.

When politicians of both parties say shit like “Americans like their private health insurance”… I kind of die a little.

When a random podcast from somewhere else in the world has a local ad injected into it by the app I downloaded it with…same.

When the godamn fucking pitcher’s mound has a CGI ad superimposed over it…same.

We’re going to advertise and conspicuously consume ourselves into extinction. So there’s that I guess.

farcaller , to selfhosted in Router died - Replacement/solution recommendations

I would not recommend unifi for a mature solution. It sure works nice as a glass panel, but it will get limiting if you will have a desire to hack around your network. Their APs are solid, though, it’s just the USG/Dream machine that I wouldn’t recommend.

Mikrotik software is very capable and hackable and you can run it in a vm if you feel like bringing your own hardware.

a1studmuffin ,
@a1studmuffin@aussie.zone avatar

Another vote for Mikrotik, but only if you’re technical-minded and want to learn how routers work. One of the things I like the most about it is the ability to import/export the router config as plain text. That makes it very easy to do things like bulk-editing (I have a lot of IOT devices I need to configure), storing your config in version control for safe-keeping etc.

I’m sorry, what game? This just looks like a 5$ bin indie™ (They got 30M$ in funding through investments) Unreal Engine 4 shooter. The fact that there’s no controller support or console ports planned says more than enough. What’s newsworthy about their use of a crappy anti-cheat? Not like most in here were ever going to even think about it. It’s a freemium GAAS shooter with an almost inevitably a small player base which will be all but dead a few months after coming out. I know I’m being mean and their people have been working on this game for years now, but come on.

You’ll find waking up on your own time instead of using an alarm clock to be better. Good luck reconfiguring your sleep schedule to allow it and still be up in time for work or whatever.

Linux is better than ever, but it is conflicting with Windows more than ever also. Changing between SSDs simply broke Debian for me. Anyway, Steam is doing an awesome job with compatibility, the games work much better than 2 years ago.

drkt , to linux in Soon to be 4 months exclusively on Linux
@drkt@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’ve been “on” linux for a decade and even ran it on my desktop without dualbooting for months at a time back in the Ubuntu 16 days. A few months ago I’d had enough of the Microsoftisms and installed straight Debian with i3wm on my desktop with intentions of dualbooting Windows for the rare graphical work I do. Maybe once a month. I managed to boot that thing 8 times, none without issues, before it finally stopped booting alltogether and I spent 14 hours yesterday trying to reinstall it to no success. It would commit suicide on second boot consistently and I said well dog darnit then. I guess I have to bite this bullet and learn how to do my graphical workflow on Linux.

Honestly, I should have done that sooner. I’m now Adobe and Windows free and I have literally no reason to go back. There’s nothing I need or miss. All my games work (thanks valve) and all my creative tools are here in some capacity. There aren’t many bugs I encounter daily in i3wm, and none are showstoppers.

Shoutout to Blender for being superior to industry standards, and Darktable for being good enough.

WereCat OP ,

While I never had issues with dual booting in the past, I’ve just found it to be annoying in general and even thinking about having to switch to the other OS because of X for few minutes made me not want to deal with it.

I also use Blender. It’s amazing. For my occasional office work OnlyOffice more than suffices. Photopea in browser as a Photoshop replacement or Krita in a pinch. OnShape for CAD for personal use. FreeCAD is nice too but has some severe limitations.

Everyone laughs like this is obvious, but I really struggle to do this. I’m not sure if it’s an ADHD thing, but I just can’t make myself go to bed at night. Extremely tired? Nah, I’d better wait until I hit a second wind. There’s unimportant stuff I’d rather do.

I envy those that can just fall asleep whenever they want. It usually takes me an hour or more of laying there to finally bore myself enough to pass out.

Beacon , (edited )

Yeah i WISH i could control when i sleep, but I have lifelong serious problems falling asleep. I've tried all the things people talk about - counting sheep, no screen right before bed, melatonin, meditation, exercise early in the day, etc etc. Some of them help somewhat sometimes, but so far there's no fix. Actually there was one thing that totally fixed it, which was taking zoloft. Taking it at noon everyday completely fixed my lifelong sleeping problems even though it did little to help the depression i had back then. Now that i say it, i think i should start taking it again just because it fixed my sleep so completely.

Akasazh ,
@Akasazh@feddit.nl avatar

This is me. I met someone who once had a psychotic attack and told me she has weaned of to a micro-dose that helps calm her internal voice so she can fall asleep.

I convinced my doctor to try that medicine (after i underwent sleep trials) and it works really well. It’s no sleeping pill, it just shuts up you internal monologue for long enough to get to sleep. It’s great, it got me off my alcohol self medication. It doesn’t make me feel sleepy, though, I need to remember to get to bed. But then it works.

Anyway the medicine is this one, of course check with your doctor, as I’m just a guy from the internet.

Beacon ,

That seems like a very powerful medication with a lot of effects and side effects that you would only want to use as a last resort. Wiki says it has effects on serotonin and dopamine receptors, which are also receptors effected by zoloft, so if seroquel helps you then you might want to consider switching to zoloft. But honestly what the hell do either of us know, we're just sharing anecdotes, which is useful but shouldn't be assumed to be true.

SteveFromMySpace ,

ADHD hits everyone different but I know I personally crash so fucking hard if I’m tired. We’re talking head hit the pillow then I time travel to the next morning.
