rotopenguin , to linux in Is FreeSync over HDMI not supported in linux even for FreeSync compatible monitors?
@rotopenguin@infosec.pub avatar

The Steam Deck only does VRR over Displayport. Valve has their own engineers working on every part of the software stack. It’s their own hardware and their dock. With all that, Valve still can’t get VRR over HDMI to work.

Fuck the HDMI forum.

Vash63 ,

Actually it works fine on Steam Deck. It uses VRR over DP to the dock, which then translates it to HDMI with VRR. The dock has proprietary firmware to do this.

Intel and Nvidia hardware with open source kernel drivers also do a similar trick where the HDMI part is in a firmware blob. Only AMD does not work with HDMI VRR.

braindefragger , (edited )

Source? So it can do 4k, 120hz+ VRR? I have found comments and change logs, but I’m not sure it fixes the HDMI 2.1 issue. Which would be 4k+ @ 120hz+ with VRR.

NM I found what I was looking for.

overkill.wtf/steamos-3-5-5-brings-just-so-much-st…

Looks like it just gets VRR working, generally. Unfortunately not some kind of 2.1 workaround.

just_another_person , to linux_gaming in Gamepad not recognized when turned on after starting games

Is it wireless?

SolarPunker OP ,

Yes, bluetooth. The controller is seen again by the OS and then by Steam but not by games already started.

just_another_person ,

I’m betting this has to do with your OS settings for two things:

  1. Bluetooth device sleep settings
  2. ID mapping for BT devices

If X minutes lapses without activity, your OS may put some device and device controllers to sleep, like USB and BT devices. Install ‘powertop’ and look to the tunables tab to see which has which.

I would also have a look at the deviceid of the Bluetooth controller while it’s working, and then check again afterwards. I think you can use ‘bluemon’ as an easy tool for that, but whatever works. If the ID changes, then it’s possible steaminput isn’t paying attention to it.

Depending on your OS, you may have to install some compatibility tools for Steam as well. On Debian-based, it’s called ‘steam-devices’, but there are others that work as well. See the Flatpak section here: wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam about ‘steam-devices’.

So just switch to DisplayPort…in fact, it would have been easier to just buy a displayport cable than it would have been to make this post.

Sentau OP ,

My laptop has no DisplayPort. Hell the monitor came with a DP cable as standard but because my Laptop has no DP port(not even through usb-c), I had to shell out for an HDMI cable

There it is. Always at least one of these special folks on every AMD HDMI 2.1 spec post.

kitnaht ,

You’re using an operating system specifically because it is free and open source, and then complaining when a closed, proprietary, licensed spec isn’t implemented. So you’re right, there sure are…looks like there are at least half a dozen of them so far.

Kinda weird. When every time you have this interaction…starts to make you wonder if maybe there’s some sort of reason…

Sentau OP ,

Well frankly, I dont actually care much about VRR. The post was only gather information because I saw some conflicting info. I agree that expecting an implementation of a proprietary spec in open source is foolish and people should be willing to make some sacrifices in exchange of freedom. What I do request is that you dont be ass about it when you recommend DP.

Yes. My work uses Ubuntu for certain touchscreen PoS devices they sell to their customers. It runs their proprietary apps automatically, and the end user doesn’t know or care that it’s Linux underneath.

There are tons of computers running Linux besides PCs. By far the biggest part are servers and supercomputers. Microsoft even has their own distribution for their server business. Then there are all the Android phones and devices. Android is Linux. In Germany I’ve also often seen Linux used for kiosks at government agencies.

Linux is used in TVs and set top boxes. Everything that says Tizen or WebOS is powered by Linux. I’ve also seen it used as in-flight entertainment systems. And Lunduke had an example of Linux running on a machine controlling how cows are milked, if I recall correctly.

For most systems you won’t actually know what OS is used until you see a hardware error screen. Although Microsoft has made it a little easier with mandatory updates.
