Killing the host is typically a pretty bad long term evolutionary strategy for something that requires a host though. Better to keep the host alive so it can proliferate you

confusedbytheBasics , to science_memes in What doesn't kill ya

Don’t they usually mutate to less deadly forms? Killing their host isn’t exactly a successful strategy.

expatriado ,

yes, killing the host is considered a jerk move in the microbial community, but some still take the suicidal path, it’s a bacterial insanity issue

confusedbytheBasics ,

Totally 💯

AIDS didn’t get the memo, try emailing them.

confusedbytheBasics ,

HIV won’t kill you. It weakens your immune system so other diseases kill you.

jjagaimo ,

Cancer is a prime example of op message

Also viruses started somewhere. A lot had to mutate to get them to be so deadly to begin with for deadly ones.

confusedbytheBasics ,

Uh… Cancer is not an organism with its own genes. Cancer is you baby, you’re just just getting out of control. Viruses sometimes start deadly but they almost always get less deadly over time.

Disappointed to see the dumb Fitbit Premium subscription carry on. Too pricey.

meant2live218 ,

Maybe I’m crazy entitled, but I feel like if I’m spending a few hundred dollars on this piece of hardware, I shouldn’t have to pay an additional fee to get some of its basic built-in features to work well.

@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

Especially since Apple doesn’t paywall basic health features behind a subscription.

mhague , to retrogaming in Who is your favorite character from The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)?

Ganondorf wasn’t developed that much and was kinda just tyranny, death, and despair from what I remember, but I liked the idea of a villain that won and now it was the hero that had to destroy the current world and make something new.

Link because his storyline in oot and mm is insane.

Also, shout out to the music box guy related to the song of storms. Iconic.

if you planted from seed, some trees from the nursery may be 8 years old or older, specially those that come rooted in 45 gallon containers

archomrade , to selfhosted in I'm at a loss on what server to buy

Lots of good suggestions here

I’m a bit surprised by your budget. For something just running plex and next cloud, you shouldn’t need a 6 or even 3k system. I run my server on found parts, adding up to just $600-$700 dollars including (used) SAS drives. It runs probably a dozen docker containers, a dns server, and homeassistant. I don’t even remember what cpu I have because it was such a small consideration when I was finding parts.

I’d recommend keeping g your synology as a simple Nas (maybe next cloud too, depending on how you’re using it) and then get a second box with whatever you need for plex. Unless you’re transcoding multiple 4k videos at once, your cpu/GPU really don’t need much power. I don’t even have a dedicated GPU in mine, but I’m basically unable to do live 4k transcodes (this is fine for me)
