ok so, this post reminds me, a while ago i archived all of the older Vsauce content, and i binged through the vast majority of it, and i can swear there was a video from him about the scale of the universe, or the scale of things in the universe, but i can’t for the life of me find it.

Either it’s hiding somewhere, or i’m making some shit up and it isn’t real lol.

MindTraveller ,

Maybe it was by a different educational YouTuber. I’m thinking Veritasium.

KillingTimeItself ,

that’s possible, but vasuce has a very specific video style, i guess i should probably go watch a couple veritasium videos to be sure lol.

The obvious answer is that it’s actually something related to “the scale of the universe” which is another really cool project, but i don’t think it’s that one either.

Not Vsauce, but corridor crew did a video like that.

Or maybe its this from the D!NG channel hosted by Vsauce Jake

There is entirely too much dough in this thread (/j).

I pronounce it staccato:

You’re someone.

Flatworm7591 , to piracy in Someone needs to create a page about how to help and contribute to piracy communities.

I think the reason people don’t post much about how to host pirated media and distribute to a wide audience is because in reality it’s not so easy to do this. This community mainly exists to help people learn the basic of piracy: e.g., how to torrent safely, how to setup a jellyfin server, which websites are good for obtaining certain types of media, help with troubleshooting etc.

Let’s take torrenting as an illustrative example. It’s simple to learn how to download a torrent, and even simpler to seed it (though you might not think so given the actual number of damn seeders lol). But if you want to become a torrent uploader of your own pirated content there are many barriers to entry:

  • If anyone could upload torrents to [insert your favorite public torrent tracker site here] then it would quickly become swamped by malicious uploads that contain malware. That’s why it’s hard to find any public trackers that allow torrent uploads. You may have better luck on a private tracker, but then you will have to jump through hoops to get an invite, and then prove yourself over a period of time.
  • It takes time to establish a reputation as a trusted uploader, and even one (accidental or otherwise) slipup and you have destroyed your reputation. That’s why pirates love uploaders like fitgirl (for example), who has created clean and trusted repacks for many years.

Hosting is problematic because it’s a constant cat-and-mouse game with domains being seized frequently and DMCA notices being sent to the hosting provider who will often happily delete your account and give your info to the po po. You’ve also got to consider bandwidth and infrastructure costs.

Apps like Jellyfin are great for personal use (a few friends and family) but usually can’t cope with a large number of simultaneous users. Online streaming piracy is very user friendly, but extremely expensive and technical to setup at scale.

You can upload to Usenet but you have to be very careful to hide your tracks since your IP address could be logged when uploading. And Usenet is often pretty hopeless for older stuff because uploaded content often gets copyright claimed quite quickly, and content is only retained for so long.

Maybe I2p is part of the answer? It has some enthusiastic advocates, but I haven’t really engaged with it much so far.

Agree about the difficulty uploading. I tried to share torrents on a few sites for a video game (which was no longer possible to buy or download legitimately anyway) and some books I’d scanned but got rejected 🤷‍♀️ I understand they have to maintain a quality of uploads and uploaders but it would be nice if they could stay away malware while still making the barrier to entry for sharing your own benign torrents low.

Flatworm7591 , to piracy in How to keep track of files?

You are going to have to be more specific about the type of files if you want useful advice.

Leavingoldhabits , to asklemmy in what's that one sandwich you can't stop thinking about? be detailed

Slightly toast two slices of whole grain bread in a buttered pan, between them, you put butter fried chanterelle mushrooms, sprinkle with a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Bonus points if you found the the chanterelles yourself.

RBWells , to asklemmy in What's your most profound "small world" moment?

My second daughter saw her middle school French teacher in CDG airport when she (my kid) was on her way to visit Italy with my mom. The teacher was leading a bunch of the students from her school on some school trip. One of the pricey ones my kids couldn’t ever go on, lol.

I’ve had a few things happen that made me wonder about the nature of reality, honestly. Had a ridiculous sex dream about a friend of ours who we hadn’t talked to in years and he called the next day (he is not someone I wanted to have sex with) and I also told my best friend I was pregnant in a dream (I hadn’t told anyone and this was pre social media) and she called me the next day to congratulate me. Prophetic dreams when I used to record them. I’m not sure any of that stuff is coincidence though.

Resonosity , to asklemmy in Do you approve sex work? Why or why not?

There are other ways in which we sell our bodies in exchange for resources. A lot of people point to soldiers, but for those of us in knowledge work, we sell our brains in exchange for stress and depression if things aren’t in balance. Think about construction workers who break their wrists drilling down floorboards, or caregivers that expose their immune systems to a high quantity of kids who are likely to spread any bugs they pick up because they don’t know better.

Sex work just involves people selling entertainment or enjoyment in a more intimate setting. The fact that it is intimate doesn’t change that it’s work, and that resources can be exchanged for service.

I think this all comes down to stereotypes specific to a certain culture. Hoping I see my culture in America make it more legal so we don’t have some of the issues that come from this market not being legal

VMware, Virtualbox for OSes that hate VMware, and Qemu for emulating OSes that only run on obscure platforms.

chameleon , to linux in How have you automated configuring your machines in terms of packages and dotfiles so it works cross-distro?
@chameleon@fedia.io avatar

My dotfiles aren't distro-specific because they're symlinks into a git repo (or tarball) + a homegrown shell script to make them, and that's about the end of it.

My NixOS configuration is split between must-have CLI tools/nice-to-have CLI tools/hardware-related CLI tools/GUI tools and functions as a suitable reference for non-Nix distros, even having a few comments on what the package names are elsewhere, but installation is ultimately still manual.

paddirn , to asklemmy in Do you approve sex work? Why or why not?

I think it should be legal, with extra protections for the workers to protect them from exploitation and abuse. Unfortunately though, our entire economic system is exploitative, so I’m not sure if it would ever entirely be by choice that somebody turned to prostitution, though labor itself is never entirely by choice. I only work at my job because I have to, not because I really want to. A worker selling their body to perform legal labor for money is on par with a person selling their body for another’s sexual gratification. Making it illegal just makes it worse for the workers, since they’re obviously going to do it anyways and won’t get any protections from the law.

Sex doesn’t always have to be for love, equating it with love is something religious people have forced on the world to get over their own religion-induced guilt over the whole thing. Bonobos have a crazy amount of sex and use it for all sorts of social interactions, it’s something animals do to feel good and relieve stress. There’s instances of other primates even engaging in prostitution as well, where they trade sex for food, and prostitution is one of, if not the oldest job among humans.

occhionaut ,

No matter what happens, so long as humans exist, they will want to fuck how they like. Its natural for a product of evolution to do it, the taboos against it exist only in our minds (aside from age limitations and informed consent; we still need to be rational) The more it gets stigmatized the worse it’ll get for people not already on top of the social heap.

Good point, thanks. I seem to recall another one as well – although both were widely defederated so I suspect most people on those instances didn’t wind up seeing them.
