I’m not the person you’re replying to, but actually, I didn’t know that; I just went and read up the history of the word and it’s pretty interesting (for a nerd like me), so thank you for highlighting this. I admit, it used to confuse/irk me to hear Americans pronouncing aluminium like aluminum, so it pleases me to realise that I was wrong and that Americans are actually just pronouncing aluminum like aluminum.
I think I didn’t realise this in part because apparently aluminium is generally used in American scientific writing. This is interesting to me because many journals style guidelines demand American spellings of words (My mind blanks of specific examples right now, but I often have to replace s with z when Americanising my writing). I don’t know why, but I find it neat to imagine a kinship with a hypothetical American scholar who curses as they “correct” aluminum to aluminium before submitting their paper.
Edit: I can’t believe I literally wrote an example of a word with the relevant s/z thing and didn’t notice. Americanise/Americanize
The same people who presumably fill balloons with helum, want to cut down on sodum in their diet, prevent Iran from refining uranum, power their phones with lithum batteries, and enjoy singing David Guetta’s house classic Titanum
Also learned this the hard way, when i was starting my “homelab” , I bought a box of (not knowingly that its bad) cheap CCA(copper clad alum) cat6 cables and im wondering why are my access points not negotiating to gigabit, turns out cca are trash and shouldn’t be used on POE or even on high speed trunks, learned my lesson now and swapped my cables to pure copper, they are more expensive like 100$ more expensive but at least they do the job.
CCA shouldn’t be used anywhere ever. It’s garbage cable for garbage people who will pinch a penny and end up spending ten times that in dealing with the issues and the eventual replacement.
That’s one thing Microsoft can’t do: give us a check box that says “always do this” on some of the shut down hangs. My audio drive does it here and there…not enough of an issue to go mess with it. Still, my computer will patiently wait for me to click the damn button.
Bought an automatic door opener (the type for handicapped people in wheelchairs) so the dogs can come and go as they please to/from the back yard. I setup infrared sensors inside and outside near the dogs level (off to the side outside) and they quickly figured out how to open the door on their own.
Was like $600 but man was it worth it! Never have to worry about them being locked in or pestering me to go out. My big dog also gets a huge kick out of sneaking up on the pool guy and barking at him (just once!) when he’s not looking 🤣
My partner still believes but sees the BS in religion. I feel she just can’t say she is atheist. We met after our kids were adults and out of the house. My kids are atheists though I never discussed religion with them. Her son is atheist and her daughter probably doesn’t believe (from our conversations) but is raising her kids Catholic because it is important to her husband who was raised in a very religious household.
