I personally slap pop-shell and flypie radial menu on it, and I really love it

wgs , to selfhosted in What do you recommend to selfhost code repositories?
@wgs@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I use stagit. It runs whenever I push code to a repo, and then serves everything as static HTML pages.

It only provides a web interface for git repos though, and for the master branch.

Trains and short range motor bikes or human powered bikes can definitely replace cars. The problem is the city needs to be designed for it. It can’t replace it in most places in the US because all infrastructure has been biased towards cars for more than 100 years. But if you imagine a city built from the ground up with trains and bikes in mind it is completely doable.

It’s going to take another century to undo the car centric society we have built in the US.

I prefer proton pass since I pay for proton and get access to everything so it’s convenient and it makes alias emails for me. It’s usually better not to keep all your eggs in one basket though.

flamingmongoose , to gaming in Outer Wilds and BOTW/TOTK

I desperately want to play Outer Wilds but that would involve spending money on modern machine

julianh OP ,

You have a console? It’s available on most of them (and eventually the switch… probably…)

flamingmongoose ,

Yeah just a switch haha. They announced that port a good while ago and not a lot has come of it

@Leon@beehaw.org avatar

if you ever end up getting a steam deck, outer wilds runs well on it. you won’t get 60fps on highest settings or anything but I played through the whole thing with the frame rate limited to 45 and it was a great experience.

PeachMan , to technology in Bitwarden or Proton Pass

Bitwarden is an open source, very popular choice, tried and tested. The Firefox extension works great, as do the mobile apps. The free version includes most of the features if you want to try it out.

If you’re considering paying for the most polished experience, 1Password is the nicest in my opinion. Stay away from LastPass. No opinion on Proton Pass, it’s still new. But I still choose Bitwarden because I like that it’s open source, and I COULD choose to self-host a server if I got paranoid (I probably won’t).

leftabitcharlie , to moviesandtv in Have you noticed how movies are getting longer?

I believe Peter Jackson has a lot to answer for in this regard. I feel like the LotR films were the watershed films for longlongfilm acceptance, and they are actually worth the watch in their longest forms.

But then The Hobbit films happened. I remember feeling that 3 films sounded ridiculous and that they were all unnecessarily long considering the length of the book and, compared to the original trilogy, they were rather horrible to look at.

havuq , (edited ) to technology in Bitwarden or Proton Pass

I like Bitwarden because I can host my own server and control it all. Not sure if the other service does set-hosting. Maybe you can do the same with that?

Vorticity ,

I’ve been thinking of setting up my own server. Does hosting your own server feel secure? I feel capable of setting up my own server but I’m not sure if I trust myself to secure it appropriately.

havuq ,

Yes, it’s secure and of course can be further secured by other services, like vpn and scanners and such. I front my stuff with Cloudflare certs on their free tier as well.

Just use complex passwords for the admin and logins. They also support two-factor authentication which is easy to setup.

joolez , to nostupidquestions in Why do most gaming laptops have vents on the bottom?
@joolez@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

The Sides are mostly “reserved” for I/O or the inner space ist already used by the battery. The Back IS possible and often used but mostly blocked by the display too. Front also blocked by the battery.

So what remains ist the bottom and the manufacurers try to minimize the problem with lifted feets which is mostly useless ob the lap.

But I consider gaming laptops not as mobility foccussed. They’re more foccussed on the ability to carry around but using on a desk.

SeeJayEmm ,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

Not to mention imaging using a laptop that vents hot air out the front.

joolez ,
@joolez@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Yes, farting noises from hot air squeezed through the muffin top are the worst.

RisingSwell ,

Having used my gaming laptop on my lap, honestly it doesn’t really block the vents. Like 50% of the bottom is vent, so either I have my legs together and there are gaps at the side, or I have my legs apart and there is a gap in the middle.

But also yes, it’s about packing it up and setting it up significantly easier and faster, as opposed to actually doing things on the go. If I let my laptop use full performance on its battery, I would expect sub-30 minute battery life, as opposed to the ~2 hours I get when the GPU is turned off.
