FLAC is best if space is no concern. But when your collection starts getting very big, there are better options like AAC (which I use). It’s a lot less space than FLAC and mp3, and higher quality than mp3 as well.
To add to the audio compression: it isn’t possible to further compress an mp3 file without losing any quality. You can either:
Recompress to a lossy codec (mp3, aac, opus). This will lead to smaller file sizes if you set the bitrate lower than that of the input file, but it will always worsen the quality, no matter the bitrate.
Recompress to a lossless format (flac easily being the best one). Going from a lossy to a lossless format will increase the file size (sometimes by quite a substantial amount), while keeping the same quality. There is very little reason for you to do this
keep the original files (my recommendation)
If you’re willing to spend some extra time learning about audio compression, you can download lossless files and compress those directly to whatever format and bitrate you want. The quality will be better than option 1 above, as the audio is only lossely compressed once instead of twice.
It’s possible for a certain hardware/software setup not to support a certain codec. For example, my jellyfin client (Finamp) uses the iOS native decoders (afaik), which means opus files are practically broken. My music library (8000+ songs) contained exactly 1 lossy file, which just so happened to be an opus file. I decided to spend the extra ~20MB to standardise my entire library to flac files, ensuring I could play every song on all my devices.
Edit cause I posted too soon: you are generally correct; only in very specific circumstances will you encounter compatibility issues like this one in the modern world. This is 100% apple being apple, and you can expect pretty much every other (reasonably modern) device to support all codecs you might encounter in the wild.
What’s the best way to compress mp3 files but still retain the quality (even possible)?
If you’re not starting from a lossless format (like FLAC), you shouldn’t really be compressing anything. When compressing from a lossless format to MP3, it’s totally subjective. When I was more into ripping CDs, I’d do V0 or 320 - there’s probably plenty of internet arguments by people more knowledgeable than me if you need a breakdown in different MP3 compressions.
I played a little bit of it, and it definitely does seem like a pretty impressive mod. However, even with Buffout installed, I kept crashing at the train. I’m hoping to revisit it once they’ve managed to put out a patch addressing some of the technical issues.
Did you install the prerequisite mods that Buffout needs? address library and xse plugin preloader? and have F4SE running? (you can tell its running if you get a little terminal window pop up when you launch the game, but before the game loads. If you dont see this and you have F4SE installed, switch to a GE Proton. I use GE proton 9-5)
Buffout fixed it for me, but i heard another alternative was to lower your graphics quality until you meet the guy after the train (tryin to be vague for spoilers), then you can crank them back up.
I did install all the dependencies. My guess is that I probably made a mistake somewhere while installing them. Regardless, I wasn’t able to get it working, and I didn’t have enough time to really mess with it further.
I might try it again from scratch this weekend if I have time. Maybe try the graphics quality trick if I can’t get Buffout to work, so thank you for that suggestion.
Make sure that your Fallout4>Data>F4SE folder only has 1 plugins folder. I ended up with two, Plugins, and plugins, somehow.
If you have that, move everything in Plugins, to plugins, and delete Plugins.
Library Addons goes into plugins, Plugin Preloader goes into /Fallout4, where the Fallout4.exe and f4se_loader.exe files are.
I think I ended up with two plugin folders from just dragging the folders into data from the archives of the mods, instead of moving the files inside of them.
This assumes you are installing the mods manually and not with mo2… but even with mo2 its better to check than be sorry, I guess.
Its “Walz”, no t, and yeah, Daily Show already made that association yesterday. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1geBpDjYb7c within the first minute of the clip.
