damn… does this count? like generally we want to avoid plastic cups in the ocean, but would it be bad to take something like this from say, a hermit crab? if we take the cup where will it go? chances are it will just end up somewhere else it shouldn’t, but this time without being made use of by crabs. my knee jerk reaction was to say animals using plastics don’t count, but that’s clearly not true when we reuse garbage intentionally to create animal habitat like artificial reefs. can we really say that only humans have the capacity to reuse their own garbage effectively?

DrDominate ,
@DrDominate@lemmy.world avatar

Plastic cups are not good protection for animals that use shells. These divers dont forcefully take the cup shell either. They’ll happily give up their plastic cups for the new shells being offered as long as they like it. Then the plastic cup is thrown away.

There’s a difference from scientists trying to make artificial reefs (which even then like the tire reef fiasco turned out to be a terrible idea) and random trash being picked up and used by the local wildlife.

brbposting ,

Our trash is going to be an inferior product, I would imagine. Petroleum-based, breaks down into microplastic particles. Might not offer the same protection of the harder shell, either in hardness or camouflage from predators.

Obviously, this raises a new question. Is it a big deal to litter titanium shells? Properly anodized for camouflage, of course. :)

I wouldn’t run everyday if I were you. Maybe start with 2-3 times a week. Honestly, you don’t need to run much to be in pretty good shape. 30 mins a couple times a week and you’ll be golden.

What helps me most is to find a comfortable rhythm, which is a combination of stride cadence and breathing. I’ve read advice on counting strides, and matching breaths to certain steps. It’s hard for me to coordinate all that so I go by feel. If you’re not feeling comfortable maybe try going slower.

When your legs don’t want to move it could mean that your muscles aren’t warmed up. You might feel better after taking it easy at the start of the run. Or your muscles might be tired from recent exercise. Either way make sure you’re hydrated.

mryessir ,

About breathing (opinionated): Two/four/six steps slowly intake through nose, half that time out through the mouth. It syncs exactly with the steps. If it doesn’t you may need to increase or decrease the pace. At each step your in- or out breathing flattens. I use this as my rhythm.

Oh extra fucking rant, I though the drag and drop was bad on Linux, probably because Ark just was 50/50 if it let me.

Oh boy, I now realized how much better Linux had it… Sure, there are a few cases, but dragging files from application to application just works unless it’s not developed. Right now on Windows, it actually just doesn’t work like I remembered it. It’s actually refusing randomly. This is a clean install, properly installed with their installer on another windows machine. No disable scripts or whatever used, real windows key and all…

TimeSquirrel ,
@TimeSquirrel@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Something is incredibly borked on your machine, hardware or software wise. Yeah Windows sucks, but it's not THAT flaky. Most people aren't having these issues. Linux may just be hiding a hardware issue or something and working around it better than Windows can.

I've noticed that before with stuff like bad RAM, where Windows will blue screen immediately on boot but Linux will make it all the way to the desktop but slowly degrade with use.

Trikami OP ,

Most of the issues I have worked through. The few that are there, still don’t work how they did before. It could be a botched install or my CPU, which I kind of doubt. I did have a segfault issue ages ago, which was patched by a bios update. Before switching to Linux, W10 worked better than it did now. On Linux, it was consistent issues with Debian and Endeavour.

This is the first time installing W10 on top of an existing one, so it should work. Maybe it’s my hardware that caused it, maybe my router just blocked the update. Either way, that was the experience.

DNF is as easy as APT. Now many distros start to use wayland by default Thanks to great Improvement with stability.

Sounds like you should get a Mac.

Be that as it may, I would like to be constructive for a change:

Why does every distro need yet another package manager? Yay/pacman I get because it seems to build it. Though I don’t understand why, other than AUR. APT is so nice and easy… I hope DNF is the same.

RPM - which DNF uses - is the standard package format for Linux ;-) The problem seems to me to be that every distribution does not attach any importance to something like common standards.

Trikami OP ,

Even if a meme, I’m already having trouble keeping up with my Android phone. A mac would be a nightmare, in the worst case it “would just work”. Unacceptable.

That sounds exactly like the reason why Linux behaves like it does. ;-)

mryessir , to asklemmy in Running: tips and advice?

Sounds ridiculous but when starting out just focus on lifting your upper leg. The rest of the muscle chain will focus on stability intuitively. Once you archive the effortlessness while running you can think about other ways to improve form (like keeping your hip under your upper body). Also don’t stretch before running. Instead start by walking and maybe at traffic lights simply use the full motion range of your joints.

I wouldn’t recommend music. It could imply a bad pace, breathing and/or focus. Listening to the world is one of the benefits of running imo.

Also: Intention. Each run of mine goes to a landmark of choice. Once there I go with the flow and enjoy nature, think about x or start pushing my pace.

Last point of return is if my body comes to peak, then I reroute back accordingly.

fjordbasa , to asklemmy in Running: tips and advice?

Like others have said - couch to 5K or similar, definitely follow a plan. Following a plan can help prevent injury from overuse or burnout if you’re not making progress. I would also suggest active stretches as you get ready to run. Swinging your legs, high stepping, butt kickers, side lunges, walking lunges, etc. The idea is not to increase flexibility with these, but rather to warm up- and don’t do anything that hurts! There’s no need to go nuts. Just to get muscles moving a bit before running

Use an interval running app.

I’ve never been a runner (had knee problems that weren’t discovered and fixed till I was almost 40), started with a simple interval running app (Just Run), and was stunned by how quickly I went from barely being able to run for 1 or 2 minutes to doing a full 2k (though not fast).

A couple other apps:

Map Runner

Zombie Run (uses a story of zombies chasing you to setup the intervals, like listening to a podcast or a movie while running)
