@sovietknuckles@hexbear.net avatar

Am I missing something? How can I make using Arch Linux my personality when once it’s set up it’s just like any other computer?

IMO there’s nothing about Arch, or any other distro, that makes it worth using, beyond whatever goals you have. If Arch helps you accomplish that goals, great. If not, pick a different distro that does.

In my case, I want to use the latest version of software and use my own configs without inadvertently breaking stuff, based on some arbitrary set of assumptions that distros like Ubuntu or Fedora have made about how their own distro should be used, and Arch has been the easiest way to do that for me.

Also, as others have said, AUR and PKGBUILDs

Unless both products had the same amount of sales and generates the same amount of revenue, the lowest seller with the lowest margin would be cut.

If there’s a replacement product somewhere it might be brought in and the cycle would start again OR the shelf space of the “winner” would increase to take over the now empty spot if the products were shelved in the same set.

A mathematical law is very different from a theorem. A law is something that is fundamentally accepted to be true but it cannot be proven. A theorem can be proven to be true (or false) using the laws of mathematics.

English being weird strikes again. You’d think they’d be swapped but no.

Carrolade ,

English was not engineered from the ground up to be sensible and consistent. Instead it evolved slowly over time, as new things got tacked on year after year, and other things died out or drifted in pronunciation.

Here’s what Middle English sounded like:

“Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote, The droghte of March hath perced to the roote, And bathed every veyne in swich licóur Of which vertú engendred is the flour.”

-Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales

I think this is straight forward. In our everyday life laws aren’t derived from something else either. They just are. And OP seemed to have a hierarchical view of them as well. They were just under the assumption that a theorem could be “promoted”.

I guess a real-life analogy would be a judge making a ruling under some laws. That would make a precedent in many countries but not a law. If then a new law were passed it could invalidate that precedent similar to someone disproving a theorem.

fubo ,

A law is something that is fundamentally accepted to be true but it cannot be proven.

Counterexamples: The law of sines and law of cosines in trigonometry.

You have reached the pinnacle of Linux, every other distro you try from now on will seem bland. 🧗🏼

nek0d3r , to linux in So I installed Arch Linux... Is this it?
@nek0d3r@lemmy.world avatar

That’s basically it. Some Arch users are genuinely just picky about what they want on their system and desire to make their setup as minimal as possible. However, a lot of people who make it their personality just get a superiority complex over having something that’s less accessible to the average user.

Auzy , to android in Are you excited about the upcoming Pixel 9, or have you given up on Google hardware?

I have an 8. Also owned a 7 (but I do lots of hiking and broke the glass on the 7, so couldn’t trust the waterproofing anymore, so upgraded).

Why would I give up on their hardware though?

Shiggles , to asklemmy in If you like romance in fiction, how do you like it? Realistic or Idealistic?

You’re practically asking if you should write your work in French or German. Both are valid artistic choices, but one’s probably going to come more naturally to you.

I do have one idea that you might enjoy though - if you write from both of their perspectives, you could have one woman view everything through an idealistic lens, while the other has a much more grounded view? That dynamic might take over what you already had planned a little bit too much but I thought it was a neat concept.

NONE_dc OP ,
@NONE_dc@lemmy.world avatar

Holy crap! That’s an excellent idea! And it fits wonderfully with how I plan the personalities of the protagonists would be! Thank you so much!

Shiggles ,

Of course, best of luck!

Carighan , to asklemmy in If you like romance in fiction, how do you like it? Realistic or Idealistic?
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Ouuuuff… either?

Depends on context?

Depends on writing?

Difficult to really say what my preference is. “Well written”, I would say. Believable, but in the context of the fiction, so if the fiction is a magical fairyland, then a believable romance would be utterly idealistic. Etc.

I use Prometheus and grafana at home because i use it at work, so I’m familiar with it

macabrett , to asklemmy in Is it wrong to report email as spam when you previously opted out and they either add a new subscription/newsletter, etc.?

I’ll mark them as spam even if I technically signed up for whatever bullshit they’re sending because I didn’t notice the box to uncheck when making an account. It’s a shitty tactic and they’ve all ruined email with it.

Yeah, this is basically my line. If I intentionally subscribed I will be sure to unsubscribe properly once (maybe twice). But if it was unsolicited then it will be marked as spam.

HonkTonkWoman ,

Yup. I’ll sign up just to get the initial discount & still mark it all as spam.

Mora , to selfhosted in Why Prometheus + Grafana over other monitoring options?

Part of self hosting is to decide yourself what you want or need.

I am very happy with Beszel (github.com/henrygd/beszel) as it is enough for my use case.

That being said compatibility is huge in the GrafProm Stack. A lot of software has Prometheus compatible end points which can then be visualised with Grafana.

Want to know how many requests are hitting your server? Count Diamond blocks mined per player on a Minecraft server? Want to track your weight and workout time? Or do you want to count yellow cars driving by your house? Grafana & Prometheus got you.

BradleyUffner , to android in Are you excited about the upcoming Pixel 9, or have you given up on Google hardware?

3rd option. I’m not excited about the 9, but I’m sticking with the Pixel 8 I already own. I’ll upgrade to whatever Pixel number adds enough new features to justify the cost.

pwnicholson , to android in Are you excited about the upcoming Pixel 9, or have you given up on Google hardware?

Pixel phones have been too big for me for a while. They won’t fit in my pockets comfortably and I don’t want to have to stretch to reach the top of the screen. Come out with something 5.75" tall or less and I’ll re-engage.

root ,

Yes. My Zenfone 8 is “small” but I want it even more compact. My old Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is the perfect size!

It’s pretty easy to strip most of it off. It’s definitely an adjustment, but I got used to it (the remaining things I couldn’t change) pretty quickly
