I’m looking for a Mastodon app. The official app and website really sucks for viewing threads. I prefer the comments to be nested like on Lemmy, but the official one stacks them all. Are there any recommendations?

Zaphodquixote ,
@Zaphodquixote@sh.itjust.works avatar

Have you tried megalodon? Does more than the official app, but with a similar layout so the learning curve is a non issue.

falkerie71 ,
@falkerie71@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’ll take a look. Thanks!

Edit: It still stacks all comments like the official one. Maybe I’m too used to the Reddit/Lemmy comment nesting style. That’s the gold bar for me, but at least something like what Twitter has would be better.

I use Fedilab, since I prefer a native app to a PWA

Just here to note two details I appreciated:

  1. La'an still doesn't know what a Romulan looks like after her adventure. The only one she met was surgically altered to look human, although Sera did drop a hint by complaining about the ears. Still, there's plenty of aliens with non-human ears, so not really much to go on.
  2. If she was paying attention, though, La'an did get another clue about Romulan physiology: When she shot Sera, the blood spray was green! Of course, Sera remembered her grandma's old recipe for molecular solvent, so La'an may have thought that was the reason for the coloration.

Some old story classics: BioShock (play 1 then the others if you like 1 enough), Mass Effect, Half Life 2 (You don’t need to play 1 first).

aluminium , to android in How does everyone feel about Sony (+Ericsson) Phones?

I can’t really comment much on current phones but as a dev I have come to own the Xperia Z3, Z5, Z5 Compact, XZ, XZ1 Compact, XZ1 Premium, XZ2 and XZ2 Compact for testing websites and Apps and I have here in Austria seen them in the wild from time to time due to Sony phones having been promoted quite a lot by local carrier - but that all was 5 or more years ago. These days I barley see them, and even if its always older Models from XZ times.

One of the things Sony through all these years always got right in my opinion is the Software. Sony’s Software IS what reviewers say Oxygen OS is. Its 90% Stock and performance is always top notch and mega consistent for the given chipset. Even the Z5 despite having the controversial Snapdragon 810 puts out a solid and most importantly **consistent **performance to this day. Its not like with Galaxy S6 which is equally if not more powerful on paper but sometimes bogs down for no reason.

My biggest issue with these older Sony phones is their Screens. For some reason 6 out of my 8 Sony phones have some kind LCD related issues (Sony was also really late in using OLED) . My XZ1 compact has quite a few dead pixels and the other 5 have some brighter areas on the LCD which can look distracting. And yes some other brands have it too but maybe I got unlucky or something but Sony phones from my experience seem to by far the worst.

With their latest phones - I think they are in a great spot. They are a boutique Manufacturer with a clear audience in mind far away from the mainstream. I think unlike LG they recognized in time that they can’t compete anymore in the mainstream and downsized the whole operation to what it is today instead of shutting the doors completely. This way people who really enjoy high-end notchless phones with a headphone jack and cameras that aim for authentic pictures still have very pricy option instead of none at all.

I am still a bit perplexed however on who buys the Xperia 10 phones for them to continue making them.

lemmyvore ,

I do! 🙂 They’re amazing value for money. I usually buy them one year late and they’re super cheap (about 200-250€). Not sure what you think is wrong with them? They have debloated ROMs, OLED HD screens, 5G, dual-sim, IP65/IP68, 128GB, 6GB RAM, good cameras (wide/normal/tele), amazing battery optimization…

aluminium ,

Thats cool, but when you get them one year late at a massive discount I doubt they make a profit on them. But good for you, for sure!

I don’t understand: did something serious happened, or it’s them overreacting?

jack ,

It’s just down to Lemmy not having good enough mod tools yet. Beehaw is a carefully curated walled garden instance that hosts some high quality communities; they are availing themselves of the only real tool they have to curb an influx of bad actors from other instances.

Here’s hoping its temporary. The admin team here at sh.itjust.works clearly operates in good faith.

NuMetalAlchemist ,

They have stated as much, and are open to refederating once the mod tools can handle the influx of people joining instances with open sign-ups. Side effect of the reddit refugee crisis.

Manticore ,
@Manticore@lemmy.nz avatar

They defederated because they were both large Lemmy instances with zero review process for joining users, and they’d rapidly starting acquiring bots and bad actors. Because of federation, these accounts could interact on Beehaw’s server like they were locals.

Beehaw on the other hand, has a human-powered review process for signup. It isn’t strict, but it keeps out bots or low-effort users. Beehaw’s community goal means that reducing the amount of bots, bad actors, and low-effort users on the platform is a priority for them. Their moderating is also human-powered, and very involved - not outright banning/blocking. They reach out to users to discuss their content’s intent, and issue warnings/requests personally as needed.

That level of moderation is fantastic for fostering community and is compassionate for ignorance and error; but it isn’t scalable when being hammered by bots and an influx of new accounts. Beehaw’s only protection from instances that shelter bots and bad actors was to defederate from them until those instances were able to address them somehow.

The Beehaw admins have reached out to the admins of the other instances; their hope is to find a solution that reduces the amount of bots and spam accounts creating on .world and .works. They don’t want defederation to be a permanent solution, it’s just the only feasible one they had.

Riaz ,

There sign up process was nearly successful in putting me off from ever trying Lemmy. I almost gave up finding instances which would let me join without filling in a completely stupid form where I have to state what communities I will join when I haven’t even had a chance to get to know what communities are out there!!.

BURN ,

Same here. The signup process for Lemmy sucks. It’s confusing and instances make no logical sense for account management. Personally I have no interest in other instances, so eventually I just picked the biggest and that’s what I’m sticking with.

If someone from lemmy.world posts to a BeeHaw community right now, I know BeeHaw users won't be able to see the post, but what about other lemmy.world users? What about users from kbin.social or any other instance? If people from other instances can still see the comments that seems like you could still have a conversation, just with a group of people that can't see it. Not sure how it works though, so curious if anyone here knows for sure.

My understanding is that other users on the same home instance would still be able to see each other's content.

-hypnotoad- ,
@-hypnotoad-@kbin.social avatar

I assume someone from a third community federated with both sh.itjust.works and beehaw would see a disjointed conversation that includes both beehaw and sh.itjust.works replies. I do agree that it's still valuable to subscribe as those conversations are still valuable and they will probably refederate in the future.

Soullioness ,
@Soullioness@atosoul.asuscomm.com avatar

If you’re from Lemmy.World and post in a Beehaw.org community then Lemmy.World users will still see your post. But no other instance will. This is because all other instances look to Beehaw to get Beehaw posts. And without Beehaw federation your post never makes it to Beehaw and therefore it never reaches/gets relayed to other instances.

Phones that run mainline Linux are seldom. The only ones that come to my mind are PinePhone Pro (outdated hardware, 400 bucks) and Librem 5 (also outdated hardware, incredibly expensive 1300$ !). If you are serious get the PinePhone Pro. But expect pitfalls because you can't just run Android apps.

Nextcloud is still the best option for self hosted cloud services.

professor_entropy , to youshouldknow in YSK: If you're on Lemmy.World or Sh.itjust.works you should not subscribe to any Beehaw communities

Why does Lemmy make it look harder than it is? It’s not a massive load compared to what modern servers and applications are designed to handle.

I couldn’t sign up on beehaw and lemmy.ml after multiple tries. It feels worse than a simple centralised platform one can build in a month.

Is there alternative to reddit for people like me who don’t need this kind of decentralisation (Lemmy feels like centralisation, just multiple number of it, if any instance can cut off like this.) but likes the (text heavy)interface of Lemmy?

cynar ,

Unfortunately, they all seem to have died to the “Nazi bar” problem or other issues. A centralised Lemmy variant would likely either lurch to the extreme right, or be rapidly pumped for profit, like Reddit is doing.

One of the advantages of federation is the ability to disconnect groups that won’t mix well. This has already happened with Lemmy. Both extreme right wing (Nazi) and left wing (communist) groups have been de-federated. They are allowed to continue happily, just away from the bulk of users. The fragmented nature also allows for server cost, and workloads to be distributed.

Additionally, Lemmy wasn’t quite ready for the mainstream when Reddit decided to sh#t the bed. I’ve watched it improve impressively, over the last few weeks though. Once it streamlines, it should hopefully provide all of us our fix.

peelon_musk ,

What are some of the far left groups?

cynar ,

Sorry for the slow reply, apparently I don’t get notifications of messages through the app I’m currently using.

The left wing group of note is Lemmygrad. It was de-federated from lemmy.world before I joined, apparently by mutual agreement. It’s basically a communist haven. Server updates have made it appear for a while, and them seem a lot more friendly than the far right equivalent groups.

I look at them akin to nudists. They have every right to their own space. At the same time, they happily understand that it’s socially inappropriate to hold their meetings outside the local school.

AngrilyEatingMuffins ,

just ignore the fed aspect? it doesn't really impact user experience at all.

professor_entropy ,

Good point but the community I like may be on another instance which would prevent similar community to grown elsewhere. If I get invested in it I run the risk of losing access to it.

delial , to linux in Switch to Linux phone?
@delial@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Because phone manufacturers don’t open source their firmware, you probably won’t be able to get Linux on an off-the-shelf phone. (Please someone correct me if I’m wrong).

Your best bet, if you want to go down thus route, is to get the PinePhone Pro. It’s relatively affordable.

Before you try anything, think hard about your relationship with your phone and what you expect from it. Does work require you have an app installed? What kind of apps do you use regularly? You won’t have things like: CVS for meds, AA for flying, Steam for 2fa, Signal, Telegram, google maps, etc. Some you might be able to use their webapps, but the browser might be a bit sluggish because it’s the full desktop version. Firefox isnt fully mobile friendly. Battery life won’t be what you’re used to. Linux on the phone is just like your regular Linux, so you’ll have the stuff your used to from there, and you’ll having calling, sms, mms, and voicemail.

I have the PinePhone and the Librem 5, but I still use my android.

boonhet ,

There are a couple of phones that can run Linux. Oneplus 6 for an example. But most can’t indeed. PostmarketOS has a list of devices that their distro works on.
