So ginkgo’s that do fruit. The fruit smells like dead fish, vomit, or rancid butter. They smell HORRIBLE and apparently that was a very attractive scent to the prehistoric animals and insects that did eat them. Yum yum.

Luckily most Ginkgo’s sold for landscaping these days are unable to produce fruit.

I have had the displeasure of smelling ginkgo fruit, because fun fact #2, a lot of cities decided years back they were very cheap and urban friendly to plant the OG ginkgo’s during city planning, but were unaware of the horror they would reek once they matured. Ginkgo’s grow very slowly. So something like 30+ years later, city planners realized their horrible mistakes and had to chop a lot down once they started dropping fruit. Still everyone in these cities would suffer a few years of the city smelling like a sewage dump every late summer.

I do not claim to be an expert ginkgoligist, but those are some fun tid bits I learned.

Tyoda ,

Ginkgos are dioecious, so there are boy trees and girl trees. The girls produce the fruit, so they are rarely planted.

VelvetStorm ,

My local park has nothing but the female trees, and that fruit is stanky but still not as bad as a Bradford pear tree, which smells like a dead asshole.

klemptor ,
@klemptor@startrek.website avatar

Yup - I went to Temple University and the whole sidewalk from the train station to campus was lined with these. The leaves are beautiful but the berries are just horrendous. We called them shitberries. It was really hard to avoid them and sometimes you’d step on one, and end up apologizing the rest of the day because that stench sticks around.

I think they got rid of those trees. The students now don’t know what they’re missing out on!

Confused_Emus ,

My college had a single female ginkgo tree, known sort-of-affectionately as The Poo Tree to most on campus.

Tikiporch ,

It should be “horror they would wreak”, but honestly yours fits the context pretty good too!

Cypher ,

Im still baffled that Seoul in South Korea has so many fruiting Gingko trees. They make the whole city smell like an open sewer and I couldn’t stand it.

VelvetStorm ,

The ones in my local park fruit and it does smell super bad. The trees also take like 20 years before they can start fruiting.

mojofrododojo ,

This unintended consequences aspect is rearing its head where I live - they planted hundreds or thousands of gum trees that are now mature and each one drops shittons and shittons of spikey gum balls every fall - but about 20% don’t come out of the trees and just rot on the limb. You can’t even rake them out. And the 80% that do come down kill the grass and clog the gutters and drains. It’s a real shit show.

That, if true, doesn’t invalidate that the guy is rich, immature, and makes a living from attracting people to pay him attention so he gets paid even more money. I said it because that’s what he is.

Self proclaimed degenerate (it’s in an interview I saw) pretending to care about people by making squid game a reality.

Delta_V , to games in Do you prefer RPGs or FPS games?

I like action games, including FPS, with RPG elements.

Borderlands and Diablo - I like that you can just jump in and start blasting without really having to read anything about the setting or characters

Fallout and Cyberpunk 2077 - slower paced and less immediately fun than the previous two, but the action does keep the story interesting

Pure RPGs can be fun as an engineering project - twisting the game’s systems to create unbalanced character builds.

SEND THIS TO LOUIS ROSSMANN. He absolutely will rake them a new one and companies tend to magically “fix” errors in their favor when people make a huge PR stink about it.

It will help bring Adobe down faster too, because unilaterally revoking previously purchased licenses no matter how old is a great way to lose all trust from your corporate customers.

Edit: also cs5 is universally pirated, this is now your legal perogative to pirate it to retain access to the copy you PAID FOR.

I will say that this is horribly fucked, nobody should have to burn through their 15 minutes of Fame in order to receive the basic goods and services that they have paid for.

Kanzar , to technology in What kind of lights should i get to make the insides of the houses light up in a semi-realistic (and configurable via computer) way.

The lighting systems for Lego kits use teeny tiny LEDs and use very thin cables. Perhaps there are generic options available?

I just googled miniatures LED and some leads popped up for me.

cubism_pitta , to technology in What kind of lights should i get to make the insides of the houses light up in a semi-realistic (and configurable via computer) way.

I use WLED a lot with strip lights and things and it works great

If you do WLED you should have no need for a bread board. Just get an ESP8266 with male headers and a nice(ish) 12V power supply that can run your strip. From Arduino to LED strip you only need to connect the data pin and ensure 12V PSU ground and 5V PSU ground are connected.

I am leaving the hiding of wires out because I have no clue.

I am curious as to what strip you are planning to use as you will need to (at least from my perspective) hack it apart and extend it with wires to get it nice.

(I advocate for RGB LEDs even though you only need warm white; the stupid stuff you can do with RGB on top of it having warm white is worth it)

db2 ,

Fiber might be a good option, with diffusers on the business end.

cubism_pitta ,

That could be an awesome solution to OPs biggest challenge

Blisterexe OP , (edited )

ooh, shielded fiber looks like a great option, thanks

edit: i might not be able to find one at a price i can afford

that part’s easy

i may not have been clear, that was the question, im not sure how to get a rgb strip with big enough gaps between the leds

cubism_pitta ,

WLED its built to work with ESP8266 / ESP32 So I recommend just getting an ESP8266; its the older and cheaper of the two at $15 for 5 (clone)

I was asking about RGB strip because using WLED effectively means you will be using one of some sort. I don’t think I would build it the same way but if I wanted to solve the problem with LED Strips I would get this

www.amazon.com/…/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9…

This strip is nice because it has cutlines after every LED (some strips have the cut lines at every 3) If you are comfortable soldering you can cut the LEDs apart and use wire to connect them together to get things from house to house

Blisterexe OP ,

that sounds like a good idea, my goal is to have one (or several) leds in each house, and be able to control them seperately, if i cant find anything else ill use your solution, but ill try and find something that doesnt require soldering first.

Ill probably use a ESP32 because theyre like 20 bucks with a wifi module and ship fast.

It’s been a long, loooong time since I’ve uttered these words, but: THAT ABSOLUTELY KICKS ASS. (or Romulan pastrami, whatever)

Now, there’s always going to be a quibble, so here’s mine: Leonard Nimoy was about 6’ in actual height, and I believe Jon Frakes is about 6’3" - 6’4," right around Michael Dorn’s height, for example.

Still-- I get it. If the artist is trying to suggest the outsized influence of Spock, I understand. I mean, Shatner was utterly magnificent in his role, but Nimoy was also right there with him, a brilliant, iconic presence that helped turn TOS in to what might have otherwise been “Lost in Space.”
