I keep seeing here people say “Its better here, because reddit has power hungry mods”.

But…what checks are in place here besides “create a new instance, and run your own duplicate community”?

To me, thats like the nuclear option. It’s something that ultimately hurts the fediverse. 1 community with 50 users is a lot stronger than 5 communities that all post essentially the same content with 10 users each.

And ok, maybe the time comes where you DO need to create the alternative duplicate community. Maybe the Lemmy mod has gotten power hungry. So a second community is created. Whats to say the second community won’t have power hungry mods as THAT community grows? Now you need a third community…and, you see where this is going.

I haven’t seen any power hungry mods on here YET, but everytime I ask the question how would it be handled, the answer is always “you could always create another instance/community.”

But in my opinion, that hurts Lemmy. So the thing you’re solving better be 10x more harmful than the harm you’re creating by fractioning the userbase.

I had this when I was at my old working place ( nurse for elderly care) after every shift. Went on a hiatus on nursing for a year . Now, I work in an intensive care unit with 9 people total living here, with tracheostoma. I have to take care of 3 people in a 12 hour shift. No more sore muscles!

You go when (1) biologically needed, and (2) it is convenient.

Stress hormones suppress the desire at work but at home you feel relaxed 😎.

I’m thinking specifically targeting the “Live Laugh Love” Rae Dunn kind of aesthetic.

Weird tangent: I was asked to design and build a dining room cupboard for my parents’ house. So I went out to the internet to look at examples to come up with design elements I liked, and I noticed something: I couldn’t find any evidence that anyone actually uses dining room cabinets for anything. It’s supposed to be a buffet or server with dish storage above, but they’re only ever used as trophy cases to consumerism. Set dressing to make the Tiktok studio look like a home. And I really want to graffiti a cock and balls on the very concept itself.

Do something like this but hang the cute little ceramic pig on a cute little steel meathook, write “BABY FACTORY” and “SPERM DONOR” on the mugs, make the signs say things like “Purchase” and “Keep Up Appearances” and “Like Share Subscribe Follow”, use fake dead plants, stuff like that.

It’s the closest thing to art I’ve had the desire to do.

I think back when people had less space and fewer things, they would hold the good fancy items for special events. Whereas now everyone has far more than they need… except ironically health insurance, a stable job, oh yeah a place to live, food, etc.

captain_aggravated ,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

Everyone everywhere stores their actual dishes in their built-in kitchen cabinets and have for longer than I’ve been alive.

Since the dawn of the 20th century, the dining room cupboard went through the following stages of evolution:

  • That’s where we keep the dishes, and when we serve dinner we put the food there on the cabinet’s countertop so you can get your plate and serve yourself right there nice and convenient.
  • That’s the case where we keep mom’s good china, we use those for special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas and when the pastor comes over for dinner, the normal dishes we got from Sears are in the kitchen.
  • Those dishes were ordered from a catalog in the 1950’s for your grandmother and are therefore more sacred than the lining of God’s ballsack. Even thinking of eating off of them is a heresy.
  • Millennials are killing the fine china industry
  • 10 unbelievable tips for reducing generational clutter, number 7 will shock you.
  • I bought this mass produced coffee mug available at national retail chains for $14 from a scalper on eBay for $290. It says JOY written in Skellington Sans.
OpenStars ,
@OpenStars@discuss.online avatar

Yup - maybe if the pastor came over you could break that China out of its jail but otherwise it’s too sacred to actually “use”, for such shitty people as (checks notes) your children.

But heaven forbid the children don’t use or want it - think of all the “memories” of the times that it could have been (but never was) used!?

It’s not like anyone else’s feelings matter in the slightest. The American Dream feasts upon us all, long live The American Dream™.

I never really understood that. Then COVID happened and now I see it perfectly. They are sacrificing their children to that great beast, which they themselves barely attained, and now they want to keep the dream alive… at any cost (even their own families). After all, if the pastor + TV + radio says so, then it must be a good thing.

I remember there was actually a scientific article written about this. If I recall, it’s something about your brain/subconscious knowing that you are close to a toilet

usualsuspect191 ,

It’s not just about being close to any toilet though, specifically the one at home is different. Coming home from a trip and I’ll need to go to the bathroom even though I’ve had plenty of good access the whole time.

finley ,

It probably has something to do with the guarantee of access mixed with the urgency and relaxed retention that comes with being in a comfortable environment. It’s unlikely to be any one thing, but, instead, a combination of factors.

yum ,

Can we use that ability to track down hidden facilities that contain a toilet (say, in the desert)?

Unfortunately this method only works if you already know where the toilet is.

I got permabanned. They IP ban you so there isn’t really a way to get back. One way was if you got banned on your computer, you could make a new account on your phone and be fine. A vpn is also possible but the free vpns suck and paying to get back to Reddit is dumb.

I think Costco glasses are a good deal, even if you have to buy a one-year membership to get them. Don’t know if they’re available online, but don’t you want to try glasses on in person to make sure they fit and are comfortable?

FlyingSquid OP ,

No Costco around here unfortunately. I don’t want any glasses touching me unless they are the ultra lightweight ones. They weren’t available at the optometrist, which is who my insurance covered.

Just checked, it looks like you can buy Costco frames online, I got my glasses in the physical store and they were super cheap (like ~$60 for the lenses and ~$40 for the frames), it came out a bit over $100, I highly recommend.

I bought glasses out of insurance from a company that I don’t think sells out of insurance glasses anymore. But it cost like $120 (getting glasses the normal way would’ve probably been a 4 digit number, so I consider $120 cheap for glassss), all I had to do was find my old prescription numbers then increase them by like 1 increment. Saved tons of money. Your eye doctor will refuse to tell you your prescription numbers if it’s been more than 1 year since your last appointment but there are ways to measure the lens curvature using light and shadows. You can’t get them any cheaper without becoming a glass blowing expert and doing it yourself, and you’d have to diy a lot of other far fetched stuff while you’re at it, so good luck with that

Myxomatosis , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in Has anyone here ever been permanently banned from reddit? If so, is there any way to get unbanned?

Only way I’ve found is to make a new email account and use a VPN every time. I miss r/politics and a few other subs sometimes but I don’t find it worth the effort. Lemmy has less traffic than Reddit but it also has less bots and dickhead mods. There’s been a huge influx of Russian trolls and MAGA tools on Reddit who like to get people banned.

Apytele , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in What are some things you can do to maintain your teeth when you don't have health insurance and can't afford dental care?

Disclaimer: I’m a psych nurse not a dental professional, but I’m commenting because my patients are a high-risk demographic for dental disease for a bunch of different reasons including poverty, decreased self-care, and medication side effects (particularly dry mouth and teeth grinding but I’ll get to that) so these are the tips I give to my patients.

Brushing and flossing, obvs. I’m not going to elaborate on this one too much because there’s plenty of actual experts on this that you can find that will explain the ideal techniques much better than I ever could.

Chewing gum and tic tacs / mints that have xylitol (and NO real sugar) in them because xylitol is particularly known to stimulate your salivary glands. Normally we associate increased moisture with bacterial growth, but your saliva is actually slightly antimicrobial and an important part of your oral immune system, so the dryer your mouth is the more hospitable it actually is to bacteria. So while you don’t want to be drooling everywhere, you do want to make sure your mouth is nice and wet most of the time. Both stimulant medications (often given for ADHD) and antidepressants can cause dry mouth.

BUT if you’re straight up eating the xylitol it can have an osmotic laxative effect (pulls water into your gut and makes your shit watery, pretty much all fake sugars do that) so you definitely want to select a xylitol product you can suck on or chew on for an extended period (as opposed to just eating and immediately swallowing like gummy bears or something) to maximize salivary stimulation with the least laxative effect.

It also helps to practice breathing through your nose (which has the added benefit of reducing anxiety), and they even make little sticker thingies to help your mouth stay shut while you sleep. Speaking of which, if you grind your teeth, you’ll also want to wear a mouthguard while you sleep. Grinding your teeth can be caused by a lot of different things but the two biggest things I see are anxiety and certain medications (particularly stimulants and antipsychotics).

And lastly this is kind of anecdotal but the biggest thing that helped my oral hygiene was having to mask at work during the pandemic because I could smell my breath all the time. I had never really been good about routine oral hygiene before that, but I started having to brush my teeth before I left the house every single day to be able to tolerate wearing a mask, and for a while I was even brushing my teeth after lunch, but eventually to save time I switched to mouthwash then I’d head back out on the floor while chewing a sugar free xylitol gum behind my mask.
