jjjalljs , to asklemmy in What's an immediate turn off in a person?

So many things.

  • queer phobic. I’m not queer but many of my friends are. I don’t need that negativity in my life.
  • smoker. Maybe a pass if they are actively trying to quit. Maybe. Most active smokers I’ve known have kind of been assholes about it, though.
  • littering. Sometimes combined with the above when smokers throw their butts on the ground
  • being a jerk about people having healthy hobbies. Like, just let someone enjoy some video games or bird watching or whatever. I can’t with people who are like “omg that’s so childish you still [play games/read fiction/go to the zoo/whatever]?”.
  • being anti-consent. I’ve met a few women who are like “just do stuff and I’ll tell you if I don’t like it” and I’m like lady there’s some “stuff” that can be done that by the time it’s happening , the damage is done. Let’s just have a conversation about what we like and what our boundaries are.
dharmacurious ,

littering.

I was going out with this guy I really liked. Probably 3rd or 4th date. We decided to take a drive, and went to a local grist mill. Walked around, had a nice time. Took the scenic route home on this road that ran along a pristine Tennessee Creek. He was drinking a Gatorade or something, and when he finished it, rolled down the window and chucked the bottle out into the creek.

I stopped the car, made him go pick it up (or I wasn’t going to drive him the 20+ miles home), and never called him again. Fuck. That. Behavior.

BonesOfTheMoon ,

Good for you. That’s disgusting behaviour.

AlecSadler ,

The fuck is wrong with going to the zoo? Other than if it’s a shitty zoo giving animals a shit life, but c’mon.

smoking

anti-consent

Can’t help but feel a “my body my choice, your body my choice” vibe from this

jjjalljs ,

I don’t understand what you are trying to say.

Jax ,

I just think it’s odd that you immediately associate smoking with being an asshole - unless they’re quitting. Like you make it very clear that personal agency is important to you - but smoking makes you a piece of shit.

jjjalljs ,

Smoking is bad for the smoker and everyone around them. If you’re not even trying to stop, you are kind of a piece of shit.

I don’t see what that has to do with asking for consent to touch someone’s butt.

vfreire85 ,

i don’t think being a smoker necessarily makes you an a*shole, but surely makes other people live with the smell and the taste of tobacco. and you can’t force people to do that.

Jax ,

I make it a point to not discuss things like this when people aren’t thinking clearly.

When you smoke a cigarette the smoke doesn’t automatically find the nearest non-smokers lungs in order to harm them. The smoke settles, and there are more than enough places far enough away from people to smoke at.

If you’re worried about secondhand smoke harming you in any context outside of smoking indoors - I’m sorry but you just aren’t thinking clearly.

richieadler ,

Nope. You literally cannot smoke without polluting others.

Azzu ,

You also literally can’t play videogames without polluting others, since some of the electricity is still generated by burning coal.

I think if someone tries to make sure not to smoke near unknown people or people that don’t want it, they’re good in my book.

Jax ,

These people are under the impression that secondhand smoke is sentient and immediately finds the nearest non-smokers lungs to pollute. I wouldn’t expect logic to get through to them.

AVincentInSpace ,

It’s fine to not be into whatever you want. If I said I wasn’t into Asians, that wouldn’t make me a racist. (I am, for the record, same as I’m into boys of every other nationality, but if I wasn’t it would still be a personal preference.)

Miaou ,

You mean smokers cannot respect consent? Agreed

You don’t need pulseaudio and pipewire at the same time because pipewire provides pulseaudio-compatible server (pipewire-pulse). Also, pipewire usually doesn’t require audio group. Did you follow the official docs or other online guide?

WolfLink , to games in Why Do People Still Play Destiny 2?

Are there aspects of the game that still offer value or enjoyment

I like the core D2 experience as much as I always have. The gunplay is great, the abilities and build crafting is great, the vibes and graphics and soundtrack are excellent.

The current season is kinda eh but they always put the weakest season they have lined up first because it launches at the same time as the campaign. The current season is more substantial than previous first seasons though, which is good since they are doing 3 seasons per year instead of 4 this time.

The main plot line is finished but there are still sub-plots that need to be resolved. Xivu is not fully defeated. We need to come to a more long-term arrangement with Savathun. (The Xivu-Savathun plot is going to be touched on later this year). Some sort of Vex alliance is long overdue. With the bigger threats out of the way, it would be neat to help the Eliksni and Cabal retake their home planets. Clovis could be a full villain any time now. Plus they are trying to sow the seeds for the new plots down the line with their “traveler/witness demise led to magic seeds being shot into space”. Plus they should answer more details about the fallout after the events of TFS.

All that being said, the main reason I’m still playing is simply because I bought the campaign + season pass combo just like I did for the past 5 years, and I intend to play the content I paid for. However there is a good chance I won’t pay for next year’s pass. There is a lot of potential left in the Destiny IP but the current state of Bungie will have to prove they can still tap into it.

It’s also worth mentioning that I’ve definitely been playing less of it lately than I used to.

billwashere , to technology in Student dorm does not allow wifi routers

I work in university IT so I have some experience here. Some schools are better than others but in general providing IT services for students is like trying to wrangle a herd of starving feral cats who are all in heat.

First of all I have never seen 802.1x implemented (Ethernet authentication) in the wild that wasn’t almost immediately removed. It’s a shitty protocol that’s terrible to debug. I totally get why they restrict APs … my god if every student had one it would be a pain. It would be like standing in a crowded room with everyone shouting and you’re trying to pick out one conversation 20 ft away.

My guess is you’re basically in a situation like my son was at ECU. It’s likely not really a university dorm but closely affiliated hence the reason of a third party. Or the central university IT is abysmal and can’t be bothered. Either way the only reason to use 802.1X is because they think it’s more secure, when in fact it’s way more trouble than it’s worth. You can do the same thing by controlling downstream routing or MAC filtering. The ECU “dorm” did that and it wasn’t much better honestly. You had to go into a website to add your MAC address to get access to the WiFi. Firstly how do you do that when your computer can’t talk to anything. Chicken and egg problem. Secondly for the ones who figured out how to do that using your phone, good luck getting a history major to figure what even what a MAC address was.

My suggestion is don’t bother. If they’ve implemented 802.1x they’re a micromanaged IT and will catch you eventually. I’d also guess they have completely overtaxed their egress traffic and your speeds are abysmal.

On a related note, when you graduate never ever rent from an apt complex that generously process WiFi or Ethernet. It will almost always suck, they will have no one to provide adequate tech support, and they are just using it as another revenue stream.

Sorry I don’t have better advice but if they control the network there isn’t really much you can do.

amanda ,
@amanda@aggregatet.org avatar

I was once responsible for a student house (we don’t have dorms in the US sense, this is the closest we have) and I have similar experiences but less extreme. My favourite was when I had forgotten to configure DHCP filtering and someone plugged in a router the wrong way so it started offering DHCP (that didn’t work) to everyone in the building, in a race with our upstream ISP.

amanda ,
@amanda@aggregatet.org avatar

Also, the times rats got into the networking room and ate random cables. I should add the network was built by volunteer students in the ‘90s.

billwashere ,

I did this a work one time… sorta the same thing. I installed pfsense VM and left the DHCp server on. I killed the network in our office for about 15 minutes.

lord_ryvan ,

I agree. But wishing death upon someone because you (and perhaps many others) don’t like them, is hate speech by definition. I kind of understand the ban.
