olafurp , to linux in How to move from Windows to Linux?

Best way to not lose data is to never delete it. Buying a new hard drive can definitely do that but backing up everything you want is completely fine too.

If you don’t want to lose data you have to keep it somewhere. Current hard drive is a good choice.

Best way I know of is to share them to Grayjay, and then add it to Grayjay one by one. I don’t think there’s a way of exporting them quicker than that.

monovergent , to linux in Which CLI app/utility you wish there was a GUI for?

yt-dlp. Too many options to remember and look up every time, but all useful and missing from GUIs when you just want to dowload audio or ‘good enough’ quality video in batches without re-encoding.

While nmtui is perfectly fine for the CLI-uninitiated, I sometimes wonder why the nm-connection-editor window doesn’t provide the same level of functionality.

everett ,

Too many options to remember and look up every time

This is a good use case for shell aliases. If you can identify a few of your use cases, you can give each bundle of options its own command.

amanneedsamaid ,

I do exactly this for downloading music, I aliased my preferred options to ‘yt-audio’

mfat OP ,

Would you mind sharing your command?

amanneedsamaid ,

This is what I use (with zsh):

<span style="color:#323232;">yt-audio() {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">	   yt-dlp --no-playlist -f 'ba' -x --audio-format mp3 $1
</span><span style="color:#323232;">}
</span><span style="color:#323232;">yt-audio-playlist() {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">	   yt-dlp -f 'ba' -x --audio-format mp3 $1
</span><span style="color:#323232;">}
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span>

It takes the best quality available and downloads it to mp3.

I believe ytDownloader might be what you’re looking for. It’s a yt-dlp frontend, you can export to video/audio pretty easily. And it’s in active development. I’ve used it to export short clips to WAV a few times, nothing too fancy, but so far it works pretty well.

The company I work for has a decent professional culture that emphasizes teamwork without any weird gimmicks. But I don’t get paid to make friends with these people. If anything, the people that think they’re there to socialize usually put the work second and make things harder for the rest of the team.

There’s nothing wrong with sharing jokes and having fun at work. As long as you understand that there’s also value in keeping your personal life seperate.

UnfortunateShort , to news in Media Bias Fact Check - Automation

The amount of people that can’t handle a super basic rating of a news outlet is chilling.

I know and accept that I rely on biased media, because all of it is biased. It’s media, not scientific papers (which are also often biased btw.). Having a bias does not automatically make it bad.

I care a lot about factual reporting tho. And I want to see the same news from different POVs, with different biases, because they will highlight different things. If you don’t, mute the bot, get your daily dose of whatever propaganda you like so much and stfu.

And no, this is not ‘centrism’. I’m pretty sure most people who use that word don’t even know what it means. Historically, centrism describes a moderate left-wing view. Centrists are the center of left.

AVincentInSpace , to linux in How to move from Windows to Linux?

OP, please don’t let the other users scare you off. I’ve installed Linux dozens of times on dozens of different computers and have never once lost data while doing it, not unless I explicitly choose the option installer telling it there was nothing I wanted to keep (which is labelled “DANGER - YOU WILL LOSE DATA” in red letters). Linux Mint installer has an option to let you keep your existing OS and install Linux alongside it in a “dual-boot” configuration. This means that when you install, you permanently set aside a portion of the capacity of your boot disk (hard drive, SSD etc.) for use by Linux. The total capacity of your Windows partition will shrink by that much and Linux will live in a new partition in that space (e.g. if you have a 1TB SSD and set aside 250GB for Linux, from then on Windows will start seeing your C: drive as being 750GB large and Linux will have a brand new 250GB volume as its equivalent of the C drive). You can change how much space each OS has down the line, but it’s really annoying and requires you to boot off a flash drive and not be able to use your computer for several hours while it rearranges its data.

After that, each time you turn your computer on, you’ll be asked whether you want to boot into Windows or Linux. (This will come in very handy if Linux borks itself and you need something working to be able to Google for solutions and use your computer as a computer until you can figure out how to fix it. Or if you decide down the road that the Linux way of doing things just gets under your skin and you want to go back to how your computer was before.) While booted into Linux, you’ll be able to access all the files on your Windows C: drive as though it were an external drive, but not vice versa. If you want to send files from Linux to Windows, you’ll have to boot into Linux and copy them over. Note that from the perspective of any apps you install on either OS, your Windows and Linux partitions are two totally separate computers, so expect to be asked to sign in again.

All that said, having backups is never a bad idea if you can afford it. If you can’t, a surefire way to keep Linux installer from erasing your Windows files is to put two SSDs in your machine, one for Windows and one for Linux, and disconnect the Windows one until you’ve finished installing Linux. This is what I usually do, and as a bonus gives more space for both OSes, although it’s by no means necessary.

So, part of it is, that if one attractive person finds you attractive, other people are more likely to find you attractive.

Humans are an odd bunch, like that.

The other side of it, is that a truly astonishing number of people go through life being told- and believing- that they need to have a “serious” relationship to be happy/successful/not a total waste, and then there’s the biological hardwiring that more or less confirms this is true.

Sometimes, to the point that they jump from one shitty relationship straight into the next.

TeNppa ,

It is well known that, when you’re single nobody wants you, but the second you manage to fool someone into relationship with you, you’re the most wanted man around.

atro_city ,

It's a well known myth, yes.

cheesymoonshadow ,
@cheesymoonshadow@lemmings.world avatar

I’m just speculating here based on my own experience, but I wonder if part of it is also something subtle in your attitude that others pick up on.

When I met the man who is now my husband, I wasn’t even looking for a relationship. I was just enjoying my life, exploring new hobbies, and was in a good place mentally – that is, I was fine if I ended up single for the rest of my life.

I imagine married people also tend to be in a similar frame of mind where they aren’t looking for a relationship, and maybe there’s a confidence that comes out of that that is attractive to others.

frezik ,

As someone in an ENM relationship, no. If you’re an awkward nerd who happened to hit it off with one person, you’re still an awkward nerd when trying to hit it off with a second.

It really depends where you work. I’ve seen places where nobody says anything because they can’t trust each other, and others where we say whatever we want because we all understand each other.

The more corporate the place is, the more restrictions you’ll have on interactions to “protect the brand”.

Obligatory “wet food is much better for cats if for no other reason than the moisture content”

Cats are apparently one of those species that’s used to getting most of their fluids via their prey, and can be bad at drinking enough water when fed a dry food diet (in my experience this is highly dependent on the individual cat: some are “picky drinkers”).

redisdead ,

Also a water fountain is better for cats than the traditional drinking bowl.
