MargotRobbie , to nostupidquestions in How do you choose an instance and does that have a significant effect on your Lemmy experience?
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

I like the instance policy here on world mostly, it’s open to all, and that the admins are reasonable with the rules and are quick to respond to issues.

SamSpudd , to selfhosted in Fellow self-hosters of Lemmy, what is your domain name?

Mine, though it says 202 users, is only actually 2, me and a test account, cause it got botted due to me leaving open registration. Luckily found out about 10 seconds after it started, but still, annoying. Though yea, just myself on here for now. :D

b3nsn0w ,
@b3nsn0w@pricefield.org avatar

you might wanna clean up your database there. at least purge anyone from the local_user table who doesn’t belong there so that they can’t log in. if you also remove all the relevant entries from person it will fix the displayed user count as well.

SamSpudd ,

Hey, it’s been a while, but just wanted to say that following this fixed my instance, and numbers are now normal again. Thanks! 💛

Lantern , to technology in How do I know if someone has physically accessed my phone?

It would depend on the type of phone. Is it an iPhone or Android?

Hamano OP ,

It’s an Android.

Lantern ,

Check for apps that are running in the background after you have closed everything.

Hamano OP ,

From what I understood, it didn’t just happened. A certain person knows things about him that he never told, or something like that.

Thanks for the suggestion, though. That’s a nice idea.

Lantern ,

It could be semi-public details. A google search and someone’s social media can give you a lot of information on a person, depending on how safe their internet practices are. Generally all you need are two or three details to find out more personal information if you wanted to.

sanmarzano , to technology in Is Flatpaks the future for Linux?

I'm a software engineer, but when it comes to configuring and managing my OS I think I have more in common with the average user than a power user. I just want to install programs and I want them to work.

The other day I wanted to install valgrind. Should be easy, right? I'm on the latest LTS version of Xubuntu. That should be the easiest thing in the world, just sudo apt install valgrind. Lo and behold, apparently I'm in an unresolvable dependency hell.

But turns out there's a snap version of valgrind. Worked fine!

So what am I supposed to think? People bitch about snap, even here, but it works every time for me. Flatpak is the same thing to a guy like me.

PrimalHero ,
@PrimalHero@kbin.social avatar

Same for me, snaps work everytime, flatpacks rarely do.

Beauty standards for women focus on what men find attractive. Beauty standards for men also focus on what men find attractive.

Syrc ,

As far as I know there’s not much difference in beauty canons between women and gay men or men and lesbians. So it’s not really saying much.

HardlightCereal ,

That’s not true at all. I’m a nonbinary femme attracted to nonbinary femmes, and I have a similar sense of beauty to many lesbians, when it comes to pretty women. When I see an image of a woman that’s framed to appeal to male sexuality, I feel a sense of revulsion. Sapphic porn is way more respectful, more humanising, and way more hot to myself and lesbians than porn made for straight men.

Women have similar taste in men to gay men, because both are sexually attracted to men. When I say beauty standards for men focus on what men find attractive, I’m talking about the average man. A straight one. Movie stars like The Rock appeal to a straight male power fantasy, rather than to sexual desire. Beauty standards for women are about sex. Beauty standards for men are about power.

Why not get a better charger? They’re cheap and you won’t have a battery sitting in a hot card which wears them out really quickly.

Yeah, I’d recommend that they take their vehicle to a mechanic that can fix or replace the cigarette lighter thingy.

I second this. A more powerful 12V.socket adapter is far better than a battery pack. Like this

citizen , to selfhosted in Help: pihole local DNS record transfer to Opnsense router

If you have adguard on port 53 that will be your first hop and main DNS server. If you setup rewrite on adguard to point *.local.my domain.con to 192.168.1.777 that should be good. Next ensure your DHCP server sets correct DNS server for clients.

docs.opnsense.org/manual/dhcp.html

Next I would ensure that the client you’re testing with is pointing to the adguard DNS. In this case your open sense router on port 53.

Depending what you’re testing with on Linux you can check /etc/resolv.conf

You can run dig command to point directly to your adguard server to verify it works and you have connectivity

dig @192.168.1.1 something.local.my domain.com

daruma OP , (edited )

Thank you that was very informative, I went through again and found out that my Unbound is using the port 53 and Adguard is using 5353.

That means Unbound is the main DNS server on my case. Where would I put my (*.local.domain.com to 192.168.1.**) rule

edit: I followed a guide on how to install Adguard with unbound. youtu.be/7RC7q5WOYC0

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Since unbound is your primary DNS where clients connect, set the override there.

daruma OP ,

Where would I have to input my domain name

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Go to Services > Unbound > Overrides, and add a host override. Then you’ll get a window to put the host, domain, and IP.

DrJenkem , to selfhosted in I know nothing about self-hosting, only want to self-host my photos
@DrJenkem@lemmy.blugatch.tube avatar

Yeah I’m not a big fan of NAS’s. I agree they’re a bit of a ripoff, you’re paying for convenience. The only reason to go with a NAS imo is if you’re unable and unwilling to learn to use linux. Raspi4 are pretty cheap, 4gb model is like $55 iirc. If you’re paying more you’re probably getting ripped off. It’s definitely going to be lower power usage than a NUC or mini PC. But maybe you can find a cheap used one.

But since you’re only hosting photos, pretty much anything should work.

TheTechNerd OP ,
@TheTechNerd@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know why the Pi is so expensive where I live. It is like $200 USD equivalent.

Stillhart , to linux in Distro suggestions?

I’m not linux expert. But I have been messing around with it again lately, trying to get it working on my gaming laptop. I was using Nobara for a bit, which I liked quite a bit. It’s a Fedora-based distro that’s put together by the GloriousEggroll guys so it comes with Nvidia drivers and tons of gaming stuff preinstalled.

I ended up ditching it mainly for one reason: it didn’t handle my hybrid graphics well. Some games worked fine, some refused to even start.

I ended up swapping to Pop!_OS because it supports hybrid Nvidia graphics with no issues. The guys who make the distro sell laptops with hybrid graphics so they have incentive to have it work well. All the games that wouldn’t start in Nobara work seamlessly in Pop.

I’m not a huge fan of the desktop environment but I’m getting used to it and there’s definitely something to be said for everything just working.

shinnoodles , to linux in How do you keep track of all apps you install and their configurations?
@shinnoodles@lemmy.world avatar

I just check my Nix.config, but most distros don’t have that privilege.

Idk how it works for most other distros, but I know on Arch you can check all packages manually installed by pacman and your AUR helper.

odium ,

Iirc pacman -Qe does something like this

cynar , to selfhosted in Are NUC hardware good for self hosting?

I hit the limit of my Raspberry Pi 4. It would periodically crash itself by overheating (Heatsink was hot to the touch) I now use a NUC. It runs excellently, and handles my home automation setup fine. Unless I start doing something extreme, I can see myself overloading it.

One of the less mentioned things with self hosting is running costs. A Pi is extremely cheap to run. A NUC is a bit more, but still well below a full blown PC. Servers can actually pull a significant load, even when idle.

OptimisticPrime ,
@OptimisticPrime@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

Thanks for mentioning running costs, I was curious about that. How much more do you think the NUC is costing you compared to a Pi?

cynar ,

From memory, I think it worked out 50-80% more power draw, on average. I might be wrong on that however, I’ve yet to do a will watt measurement with like for like loads. My testing was closer to both idling.

The NUC can draw more power, but has far more advanced power saving features too. I ended up budgeting using 20W.

Cenzorrll ,

Not op, but a nuc idles around 5 watts, and at load can use up to 100 watts depending on specs. A raspberry pi4 idles somewhere around 3.5 watts and at load is still under 10 watts.

Mine as well. Same internals as new 3ds, more rugged and rounded design and no cluttery layout. Plus being the newest model means it being less worn out potentially especially when you buy it second hand
