jws_shadotak , (edited ) to linux in What portable utilities do you carry with you.

Hiren’s boot CD

It’s a small ISO with tons of utilities on it. It’s great for recovering data if shit goes really south. I always have one handy.

Edit: toss it onto your ventoy stick

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Which Hiren’s boot? The old official 15.2 or the new PE version?

jws_shadotak ,

I use the new PE version since it’s still maintained and has had something to fix any of my problems so far.

Hiren’s boot CD is still kicking around?

LastoftheDinosaurs , to linux in Which DE would be a better fit for awesomeWM?
@LastoftheDinosaurs@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve never used a DE with Awesome. How would you even do that?

minicx OP ,

Just use session manager like lxsession

wonderfulvoltaire , to linux in Plan on getting a Linux laptop: any suggestions?
@wonderfulvoltaire@lemmy.world avatar

Novacustom looks pretty good. Wish it had amd GPU options but other than that the prices are right for the hardware.

eugenia , to linux in Europe is doing so well regarding Linux smartphones
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

I use the Murena /e/ OS (developed in France). It’s android-based, but totally degoogled (more so than LineageOS). Happy with it so far. I also installed Ubuntu Touch in an older phone, but it’s definitely not ready.

lnxtx ,
@lnxtx@feddit.nl avatar

Me too! /e/OS rock stable, even on my second-hand Samsung A5 (2017).

muddybulldog , to lemmyshitpost in So, apparently shit post mods will just remove posts with positive upvotes without any mod mail or explanation.

Read the modlog: “I don’t this fits the content of lemmy shitposting.”

Cabrio OP ,

What mod log? How do I view this on jerboa? Why don’t I receive a notification of mod action?

oshitwaddup ,

It’s on the bottom of the page on web, it’s a log of moderator activity. Can’t view on jerboa, and probably nobody programmed a notification like that, either not having time or just nobody thought to

muddybulldog , (edited )

There’s no facility to be notified on mod action. If you care, you can read the modlog.

<instanceurl>/modlog

Cabrio OP ,

I only engage through Jerboa, how do I know that an action was mod action to then go to another access portal to hunt down why my post has disappeared? Seems counterintuitive.

muddybulldog ,

You can always write the code required and create a PR.

Cabrio OP ,

Sorry, I’m just a new user trying to make sense of a social media platform.

keep “beta” in mind here. its all volunteer made, originally by just a small group. its going to be clunky initially. so was reddit.

Pyroglyph , to selfhosted in What is your machine naming scheme?
@Pyroglyph@lemmy.world avatar

I tend to name mine after their physical appearance, though I’m leaning towards space-related names now.

I’ll copy a Discord message I sent someone while explaining my naming scheme:

in chronological order: my very old laptop was black and grey so it was Batman my first build had orange/gold fans so it was Aurum my next build was black and white so it was Mono my current build had lots of RGB so it was Nova (like supernova) my home server has the BitFenix wings logo so it was Flight my laptop is sleek and pretty speedy so it was Comet

snrkl ,

First macbook air was ethereal, nas was bitbucket, first macbook pros deathstar then dreadnaught, second bigger nas was abyss…

More recently I’ve been using Neal Stevenson characters and themes.

Mobile wass “primer”, high spec laptop was “reason”, workhorse laptop was “chevaline”…

Work servers I’ve always liked two themes:

Chaos or medications:

Anarchy, bedlam, disturbed, chaos, mayhem, futility, entropy, maelstrom,

Sudafed, NyQuil, Tylenol, advil, codeine, morphine, panadol, Valium,

Pyroglyph ,
@Pyroglyph@lemmy.world avatar

I like the name of the 2nd NAS because you can say “I’m just gonna chuck these files into the abyss”

TCB13 , to linux in Plan on getting a Linux laptop: any suggestions?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been running Debian 11 and now 12 on an HP EliteBook 840 G5 (i7 8550U) and everything works out flawlessly out of the box. When I say everything I really mean everything, even special keyboard keys for brightness, volume working after install. Battery lasts way longer than under Windows and the computer runs much colder.

I’m using voyager and it’s a good Apollo replacement as well!

I don’t think you can interact with Mastodon from Lemmy, but you can do the reverse.

@crunchpaste@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Probably offtopic, but are there any popular old android tablets that run linux proper?

Not android but I ended up going with a surface go 2 running pop os. It’s a little tricky to get going but works great so far.

check the postmarketos wiki. they have a couple of options...dunno how well supported though.

pezhore , to linux in How do you keep track of all apps you install and their configurations?
@pezhore@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh! I can participate!

Everything I have/configure is 100% in Ansible. I learned the hard way that rebuilding a workstation from scratch sucks if I only depend on my brain to remember things.

It takes some effort to keep it updated - if I’m trying out a new app, I have to remember to add it to my config.

The other thing that I’ve started doing is using Restic for file level backups. That’s relatively easy to set up, it supports a multitude of backend storage, and works well with a cron job for braindead backups.

habanhero , to lemmyshitpost in Whenever I sort by "Hot", I never get an erection. Do I have to turn NSFW filters off in my settings? If so, why is "sort by Hot" even still there?

DO NOT answer the door after sorting by “Top”.

I like having the conversation organized around topics instead of people

Izzy ,
@Izzy@lemmy.world avatar

I agree as I generally don’t care about individuals opinions. I prefer to follow topics rather than people.

RedstoneValley ,

This. If you like to follow people (Twitter-style) then Mastodon is the right tool for you. If you are focused on topics and don’t care much who supplies the content (Reddit-style) then Lemmy is what you want.

jkmooney ,
@jkmooney@kbin.social avatar
