crowsby , to nostupidquestions in How did Lemmy.world become more popular than Lemmy.ml?
@crowsby@kbin.social avatar

I see a lot of posts about how lemmy.ml admins are deleting any posts critical of Russia & China. Are there any receipts for those claims? I haven't seen any actual proof, just a whole lot of people saying tankie.

Probably just confirmation bias (or maybe it’s called something else) as you never see videos of people properly yielding or stopping at red lights.

Chadarius , to nostupidquestions in So how long until the Fediverse is monetized?

Think of the Fediverse much more like Wikipedia than anything else. It is run in donations and volunteers. It is not for profit and for the benefit of all people.

The other thing they don’t say during cpr class is that the resuscitation rate for an out of hospital cardiac arrest is 9.1%.

One of the biggest factors in survivability is the time to initiate CPR in the time the compressions are interrupted. My EMS department has moved away from a AHA to high performance CPR.

Vorticity ,

What is an AHA and what is high performance CPR?

Zikeji , to nostupidquestions in Are there really that many terrible drivers out there?
@Zikeji@programming.dev avatar

Yes. People get so used to driving that they react poorly in new situations (like tunnel vision but on a grand scale). Driving became a chore and muscle memory to them.

The thing with driving though is it is very dynamic, you can’t simply half ass your way through it forever.

One of the first things I learned when getting my motorcycle license was to treat every driver as a threat, and I’ve applied that to my driving as well.

Just remain vigilant and aware while driving.

appropriateinside , to nostupidquestions in So how long until the Fediverse is monetized?

Don’t even mention how risky it is having various people running the servers themselves.

Security? Backups? Due diligence? Ability to pay? Awol?

All different person to person.

Idk a good solution, but the fediverse has big problems to solve. One of which is that instances are single servers, there is no distributed compute model, which means they crumple under load and can only scale so far. Not to mention the unsustainable costs that start coming with it…

If Lemmy in general grows to the user base of reddit, infrastructure costs(if it was optimized via scale) would be in the tens of millions/year. Given that it’s a hogepoge of mixed providers using expensive AF hosting probably hundreds of millions.

TheLurker ,

Account one day old with the first comment being about how the Fediverse is fundamentally flawed and wrought with risk. Further general fear mongering and lack of understanding how the technology works.

Found the Reddit marketing team. Please be sure to pass on to spez our most sinsere get fucked sentiment.

appropriateinside ,

Instead of having a technical and factual discussion about it, let’s instead attack people!

No one here needs your flavor of toxicity…

If you can’t attack the argument or idea, attacking the person to rub your ego is a pretty toxic and nonproductive thing to do.

It’s your choice to be offended and to respond aggressively instead of treating it as a discussion on how we can improve the platform, what deficiencies are concerning, and how those will affect the users and instance owners.

TheLurker ,

Oh please. Don’t try and play the victim card here. You roll into this place with clearly no understanding of the Fediverse or Federated services and general and start spewing hyperbole and engaging in general fear mongering.

Then you cry foul when you get called out on it. Don’t for a minute think your tired old cliche of making inflammatory statements then playing victim will wash for even one second.

appropriateinside ,

M8, I’m not here to have slap fights with people like you.

You clearly are talking in bad faith, you claim I’m making inflammatory despite you failing, entirely, twice now, to attack my argument and not me.

And after pushing you to not be an ass, here you are again, being an ass. How about you try and engage on the topic, instead of stooping to interpersonal politics?

I have little idea, yeah, that’s why I’m actually talking about it to kick off some conversation that either shows me why/how I’m wrong or otherwise increases my understanding. You have done neither, you have no leg to stand on to complain there as you have done nothing about it.

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with technical conversation and common discourse/argument? Because toxicity is not how you carry one on.

TheLurker ,

I’m talking in bad faith? Says the person who comes in swinging then instantly shifts to victim mode.

You didn’t have an idea, you had an accusation. That accusation was called out, slapped down and now you are trying to build some narrative about being some “poor defenseless commentary just looking to discussed and idea”. Bullshit!

I’m done with you. Truth is where it needs to be. Your attempt to slander the Fediverse failed. Learn to live with your failures.

whatsuphotdog ,

Is there a setting to disable gifs and other images in comments? Or at least minimize them so I have to click before they appear?

RemembertheApollo ,

Still pretty raw and there’s a lot of things that would need to change if people want a more reddit-app like experience. Reporting posts, collapsing comment chains, nsfw designation, automatic image display opt out, etc.

The platform is gaining users and people are implementing changes frequently, so if it continues to grow I’d expect to see a more familiar set of tools appear.

rdavis , to nostupidquestions in Subscribe pending?

I believe that your subscriptions are pending if the community you’re subscribing to belongs to another Lemmy instance. I’m guessing that a moderator might need to approve your membership. But I could be entirely wrong!

DevCat , to nostupidquestions in Are there really that many terrible drivers out there?
@DevCat@lemmy.world avatar

If one out of every 10,000 drivers is a complete idiot who got their license in a box of Cracker Jacks, in the US there are about 36,000 idiots on the road. This is only full-time idiots, there are part-timers who do so only as a side hustle.

Metacortechs , to nostupidquestions in Are there really that many terrible drivers out there?

Where I live, absolutely. Everytime I hit the road I see at least 5 idiots turning left from the far right lane, driving half the speed limit, running red lights, having no idea what the right of way is or how intersections with only one stop sign work.

And I don't drive that much, in 2.5 years I've put 20k miles on, 3k of which were road trips and Im not counting those drives in my idiot count.

luthis , to nostupidquestions in Is there an instance that deals with questions regarding uploading videos to the fediverse?

Please report back when you find out!

AFAIK, there is no way to embed videos in Lemmy which is pretty lame.

I have used catbox.moe, but there’s probably a better option that links you to a player, rather than a download link.

I’ve also uploaded to peertube (peertube.nz) you could try that too

Just be mindful that Owncast does not integrate VOD storage, it’s up to each user to record and upload VODs elsewhere after the stream is over.
