A lot? Trichinosis has almost been eliminated in pork. An old study looking for a particular parasite found little to none depending on the product. Here is another study showing very low incidence of parasites in meat products, but also includes fresh produce in the study which had higher rates than some meats.

So I disagree that "A lot" is correct.

What would be the consequences of a smallsword wound to the belly?

I’m 20, I practice fencing. My height is 192 cm, I usually fence against shorter opponents. They often manage to drive their smallsword into my belly. That’s why I’m curious: what would it be like to get wounded into the belly by a real smallsword? How lethal would it be? How painful? How would I react?

Assuming it perforates the intestine - big infection from fecal matter getting into the abdominal cavity. It's called peritonitis, and AFAIK it's pretty much fatal if untreated. Severe abdominal pain as the infection spreads, all the vomiting and diarrhea cleans you out, and then the infection starts to shut your intestines and the rest of your organs fail while you go into sepsis and die. It's not fast, either. It can take several days.

If the news could get their collective heads out of their asses and stop validating the right wing freakshow by giving them tons of airtime, then yes, students could also potentially sway the election.

Elon Musk says it's his turn to have the remote (www.engadget.com)

[Xitter] just announced a smart TV app for streaming video. Or, more accurately, that it claims it’s building one, with absolutely no launch date mentioned. The appropriately-named [Xitter] TV wants to be “your go-to companion for a high-quality, immersive entertainment experience on a larger screen.”

"Xitter"?

Reads like "chitter", sounds creepy enough.

Picked up near the Ukrainian border, they say?

Wonder how much further they will go to tie this to Ukraine. Hasn't ISIS already claimed responsibility?

I think you're right. I messed up. I read it as the rights of the LGBTQ were enforced by restricting others.

Boeing's safety culture falls short despite the company's efforts to fix it, according to experts (apnews.com)

When it comes to safety culture at Boeing, there is a “disconnect” between senior management and workers, and employees responsible for checking the company’s planes question whether they can raise issues without fear of retaliation, according to a panel of outside experts....

RemembertheApollo ,

In Boeing's case that's probably the reality of the last couple decades. The beancounters have gotten in the way of Safety.

There were several missteps by vaccine proponents that undermined their case. There was also a lot of hyperbole from vaccine hesitant people that made them look hysterical.

Really. What missteps were made? The hysteria from hesitant anti-vaxxers and political fear mongerers were real, I would call "hesitant" people the ones who realize vaccines are a likely necessity but didn't understand how the COVID vaccines worked and were probably influenced by lies from the ant-vax crowd.

What middle ground could possibly be made here regarding "truth"? Vaccine risks are known and fairly well established. The risks of early COVID strains were known. The only people straddling a fence in the middle are those who lack the knowledge of the risks or have objectively real medical problem with vaccines, not some made-up junk about mercury or something.

Vaccines are neither a 100% safe panacea, nor are they injectable death.

OMG this is binary JAQing off. Nobody suggests either of these and it's ridiculous to even posit this phrase.

But according to Putin Russia is an awesome place. How could they need assistance with military hardware from Iran?

Go ahead and buy. Shares generally tank pretty quick after IPO for companies that don't actually make anything, the dot bust ensured that. Only time will tell if Reddit shares improve or flounder around not going anywhere. An additional thought - Reddit would do well to do things like get rid of old.reddit, go after ad blockers, and maybe implement a "verified" fee program like Xwitter to boost their stock potential. And also ensure I'll never return.

I'm 100% for mandatory safe storage laws and prosecution of those who fail to do so, especially if that failure leads to injury, death, of theft of said firearm and that gun is used in a crime.

Unsecured handguns account for the majority of firearm suicide deaths in the United States, study finds

Overall, firearms used in unintentional injury deaths were often stored loaded (74%) and unlocked (76%) and were most commonly accessed from nightstands and other sleeping areas (30%).

It is difficult to ascertain the exact number of guns that are stolen from individuals in the United States because many of these thefts are not reported to law enforcement. However, estimates from a number of survey studies indicate that roughly 200,000 to 400,000 guns are stolen from individuals each year....Whether taken from gun stores or from individual gun owners, a firearm is stolen every 2 minutes. These stolen guns are often diverted directly into illegal trafficking networks and end up being used in the commission of violent crimes.

The Largest Source of Stolen Guns? Parked Cars.

All stolen guns are available to criminals by definition. Recent studies of adult and juvenile offenders show that many have either stolen a firearm or kept, sold, or traded a stolen firearm: According to the 1991 Survey of State Prison Inmates, among those inmates who possessed a handgun, 9% had acquired it through theft, and 28% had acquired it through an illegal market such as a drug dealer or fence. Of all inmates, 10% had stolen at least one gun, and 11% had sold or traded stolen guns.

The Southern [of the USA] region has the highest percentage of house-holds with firearms and the least safe storage practices (Okoro et al. 2005). Not surprisingly, most Southern states are “exporters” of guns traced in crime (Mayors Against Illegal Guns 2010).

So the assholes that need to have guns with them, constantly available, unsecured, because the "might need to access them instantly" or some such nonsense are the very people feeding guns into criminals hands and causing death and injury via accidental shootings and suicides.

Running wires is expensive. That's why most people opt for wireless, and on top of that, the convenience systems like Ring offer with their app, no NVR/DVR, none of the typical security system hardware cluttering things up.

All the countries with space programs have people in some form of dire strait. Starving, homeless, lack of medical care… Are you saying achievements like this aren’t allowed to take place at all until every problem is taken care of? I can assure you that at no point in civilization has there been times where someone wasn’t in a bad spot while society moved forward. Yeah, India has some big problems, and huge wealth disparity is a problem that many places face alongside India, but you can’t shut down progress because all the other problems can’t be solved.

The problem is you’d have to tear up a shitton of infrastructure to do it because built-up areas have no room to extend road widths safely to accommodate bike lanes. The driver behind that problem (pun intended) is the car culture and lack of public transportation. They can’t get rid of car lanes to hand them over to walking/biking dedicated areas because there’s too many cars and people that rely upon them to get around. There would never be enough people that would vote for or support such a project. Rural areas DGAF and are too poor to build bicycle infrastructure.

It’s not that we can’T be bothered, it’s the usual problem of Americans not wanting to pay for anything that they don’t use themselves or that might inconvenience them even though it’s good to get cars off the roads and keep people safe.

Not worried about being dead, really. I didn’t exist for millennia, I got my time in the sun, I won’t exist for the rest of time. It hasn’t bothered me.

Dying on the other hand sounds like a painful, grief-ridden, stress filled misery. I really don’t want to have anything to do with a drawn-out death. That’s what bothers me.

Wow. Reading the heavyhanded corporate plays by people like musk, Reddit’s c-suite, and now the fears about Threads it’s like the corporatocracy is trying to crush and/or consume independent social media.

Do you find that you're on the fed more than you were on r/ just because you're really really excited to watch your favorite communities become more active?

I do, but as more people join I’m also feeling a little republican - i got my spot and this is good; everyone on the outside can go fuck off now. I don’t want it to get so big that it’s what we left. No intended disrespect or lack of acknowledgment to those who were here before.

RemembertheApollo ,

Yep. Not as busy as r/, but that also means a lot less noise. Really enjoying seeing the old communities reappear in their original or new, fresh forms along with some crazy new stuff that we’ll just have to see if it sticks. YSK: wefwef is a web app that look very similar to Apollo and works on both android and ios (lemmy.world)

Why YSK: looks very similar and functions like Apollo, if you’re used to Apollo that’s a great app for you, even if you do not, it’s still one of the best apps for lemmy You can install the web app here: wefwef.app/settings/install or just use it on your browser here wefwef.app

Nimona (2023) is probably the second best movie I've seen this year! Have you/will you see it? (lemmy.world)

I watched Nimona on the weekend, it kind of took over my life briefly. It was a blue sky project that spent several years in development before being sold on when the studio closed, bought up by netflix, set to release during the pandemic, then delayed. Let’s say my expectations were low but a depth chage came along and blew...

RemembertheApollo ,

Enjoyed this movie far more than I thought I would. Her character by far is the best written and CGM does a great job voicing her. Really steals the show. Weakest part of it is the beginning that falls to the trope of “if the main character was simply able to form a complete sentence we probably would have a much shorter film”.

Still pretty raw and there’s a lot of things that would need to change if people want a more reddit-app like experience. Reporting posts, collapsing comment chains, nsfw designation, automatic image display opt out, etc.

The platform is gaining users and people are implementing changes frequently, so if it continues to grow I’d expect to see a more familiar set of tools appear.

RemembertheApollo ,

The BS idea of infinite growth that our financial system revolves around. The stock market and investments all demand endless growth, and that pressure on company quarterly reports drives everything from unbundling, to suppressing wages and benefits, to squeezing users for more money in any way possible- and for us that’s ad revenue to be extracted from our browsers and apps.

For anyone thinking this is not so great - you can buy velcro wraps that go around table legs, or in this case newels or balusters, made of scratchable things like sisal that will protect your furniture and keep kitty happy.
