scytale , to nostupidquestions in Why are weather apps so bad at telling you the current weather?

Weather Underground allows you to filter down to your zip code. Not accurate down to your exact vicinity, but better than the weather forecast for your entire city.

kent_eh ,

I was also going to suggest Weather Underground.

The sensors include crowdsourced information from personal weather instruments that people have installed themselves.

There are 3 measuring stations within a 5 min walk of my current location, and a large number of them all across my city.

The only downside I see is that the app is ad supported.

Nastybutler , to asklemmy in What is it like to live in a an extreme climate area like Alaska? How os i different than the lower 48 States?

Depends on what part of Alaska you’re talking about. South Central is all connected by a road system (yes, it’s paved) but there really aren’t many alternative routes, so if there’s a bad car accident or a landslide, you’re effectively cut off.

Another difference is the distance between places. When I travel to the lowered 48 I’m always reminded of that fact as pretty much every few miles is an exit to a new town but they all seem to have the same shitty strip/outlet malls and chain restaurants, like carbon copies of the next town over.

Here there tend to be small communities along the highways but all the communities seem to have a distinct vibe and flavor as other than a few pockets of larger communities there aren’t many chains until you get to the more populated areas.

Plus no billboards obstructing the views as you drive along the highways so it’s very scenic most of the time. Mountains everywhere for most of the road system.

Outside the road system the communities tend to be pretty small and very rural as they’re usually native Alaskan villages or small towns along the panhandle in the South East. They’re close to BC so very similar climate and topography.

Along the coast are many fishing towns that all tend to be similar. Harbor, bars near said harbor, churches, and small homes. With a general store and maybe a library.

Up north is where the climate sucks most of the year, except for about 2 weeks in the summer. Not many people other than Alaskan Natives are brave enough to live up there full time. I’ve worked up there on a 2 week rotation schedule but if I had to be up there full time, I’d go insane.

EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted , to asklemmy in What email provider do you use? Would you recommend it?
@EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

ProtonMail. Works great for the most part.

Except their desktop “app”, which is total shit. It’s just a webview in an electron framework. If I wanted to keep a webview, I’d just keep a tab open in my browser. Or a separate browser window if I wanted to keep it separate.

finestnothing ,

If you use the paid version of proton you can use basically any third party client (I use thunderbird)

Resol ,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

This is exactly what I’m doing too.

EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted ,
@EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I am aware. But I feel like just a reasonable client shouldn’t necessarily be considered a premium feature.

PlexSheep ,

I’ve hosted my Mail with them for over a year, still have them as my backup. I wouldn’t really recommend them, as they don’t adhere to the standard protocols which infuriates me. As a result, you can only use a proper email client on PC with the back they call bridge, you cannot use a proper client on phones, forget syncing of calendar and contacts.

There is more, especially for the non-mail products.

EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted ,
@EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

as they don’t adhere to the standard protocols

To what standards protocols do you refer? (I’m honestly asking; I’m not very knowledgeable about email architectures.)

As a result, you can only use a proper email client on PC with the back they call bridge

I thought that is kind of required simply due to the nature of their email service being end-to-end encrypted and with the decryption key being stored locally only.

Am I misunderstanding something?

timbuck2themoon ,

You’re not. The whole point is encryption so the bridge is a must.

PlexSheep ,

I meant IMAP, SMTP, POP3. It’s true that they do some encryption shenanigans, but firstly I don’t really see the benefit over just using encrypted SMTP and encrypted IMAP, and secondly we already have PGP for that, IMO it would be better if they made that more accessible.

Some people might not be bothered by this, but it bothers me a lot. Which is why I left. The reduction of usability is not tolerable.

Besides that, they also don’t support CalDAV and CardDAV (syncing of contacts and calendar), which is something that groupware absolutely needs to be viable for me.

You might disagree or not care, if so, good for you, there is definitely much worse than proton.

EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted ,
@EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

shenanigans

To call it “shenanigans” IMO doesn’t give it due credit.

As for the PGP thing, I’ve been with ProtonMail since they were in beta way back in 2013-ish and one of their founding goals was to provide encryption that was accessible to even casual users.

And like it or not, PGP is a thing that is quite confusing to most people, assuming they even know what it is.

Besides that, they also don’t support CalDAV and CardDAV (syncing of contacts and calendar), which is something that groupware absolutely needs to be viable for me.

Couldn’t agree more. They really need to extend Bridge to support calendar sync.

PlexSheep ,

If bridge could have the DAVs and we could host it on a non localhost IP, it would be a compromise I could live with. As it is now, you’d have to install it in any VM you have, and of course it also doesn’t run on phones.

I don’t like that this chart makes it seem like all are valid. Science is literally defined by method. Material realism is maybe less strict, but it can’t be science if the scientific method isn’t followed.

whydudothatdrcrane OP ,

As the author of the meme I disagree that such impression is given as to “toddlers destroying their toys” or “French surrealism” and Marxism being equivalent. May I draw your attention to these neatly distinguishable squares that break the chart up to ample separable plots? They are there to separate things rather than showing their equivalence.

HollowNaught ,
@HollowNaught@lemmy.world avatar

These kinds of charts are usually used to compare things that, in this case, wouldn’t be science, but humourously could be considered science if given a chance

But the other guy is right-if you don’t follow the scientific method and don’t try to describe your findings in ways that attempt to better understand the universe, then that’s not science. That’s bias

How do you prove it’s not you in either case? Photoshop doesn’t make a whole video of you fucking a sheep. But AI can and is actively being used that way. With Photoshop it was a matter of getting ahold of the file and inspecting it. Even the best Photoshop jobs have some key tells. Artifacting, layering, all kinds of shading and lighting, how big the file is, etc.

Dell/HP SFF? 7th-9th gen CPUs, super cheap, quiet, should idle at 10-15W.

Only issue is 4x 3.5" drives for sure won’t fit, you need a pretty unique case to do that in mini-ITX size I think

Not sure which ones have NVMe slots, would have to research that.

sugar_in_your_tea OP ,

As long as it has the ports, I can look into options for cases. I only need 2x 3.5" drives for now, the other two are just for upgrade options (e.g. buy two bigger drives, copy from existing array to new array, remove old drives, etc).

I’ll have to check those out.

moriquende , (edited ) to asklemmy in TV nerds: what should I watch

Some shows I really enjoyed in recent years:

  • Arcane (amazing animation, world, and story - you don’t need to know anything about the game to enjoy it)
  • Peaky Blinders (it’s finished and so good throughout)
  • Travelers (also finished, extremely underrated)
  • The Expanse (6 seasons of some of the best sci-fi ever)
  • Stranger Things (ongoing but highly recommend)
  • Beef (limited series so finished, so good)
  • The Bear (very good, raw characters and emotions)
  • Ted Lasso (no need to care for football, just extremely lovable characters and heartwarming story)
  • Breaking Bad (if you haven’t watched this, it’s a must - best TV imo)
  • The Last of Us (no need to know the game)
  • Andor (best star wars since the original trilogy, mature, dark, and suspenseful)

They’re in no particular order, and I’m sure I’m forgetting a lot, but I definitely think all of the above are must watch.

eightpix ,
@eightpix@lemmy.world avatar

Travelers, The Expanse (noted by OP), Beef, and Breaking Bad are all solid. Add Mare of Easttown, the Morning Show, and the Newsroom and you’ve got half of my favourite shows of the past 15 years.

Ted Lasso was the big surprise to me here. The characters are lovable, caring, and well-crafted, and the story is simple but compelling. In all, only the most heartless, isolate, human beings would get nothing from this show.

ours ,

“Very good” is an understatement for The Bear.

And recent seasons just keep stacking up the talent.

showmeyourkizinti ,

Travelers is such an underrated show! Really good premise, tight well thought out time travel, solid storytelling and some great performances by lesser known actors. I really want to second its recommendations. Honestly it’s not top tier prestige TV but damn it’s good.

Also some of their software becomes badly dated (like Lemmy).

But for the most part it’s super easy deployment for stuff you want exposed.
