The article relates to the share of advertising revenue these Maga guys get. Musk and his dozens of shareholders earn Xitter’s bottom line, of course, but this is a different story.

Flyberius , to unitedkingdom in How a hybrid war with China could hurt UK consumers
@Flyberius@hexbear.net avatar

China is not going to invade you fucking war mongering ghouls. They literally have no need to.

echodot ,

You are correct China have no need to invade Taiwan. They could just not do it but they probably are going to anyway because they are like that they are expansionists, Communists always are.

Flax_vert ,

“communists”

wewbull ,

Like they didn’t invade Tibet, or exert their dominance over Hong Kong?

Flyberius , (edited )
@Flyberius@hexbear.net avatar

You know tibet was a feudal slave state before right? It made sense that, whilst throwing off their own shackles, they popped next door and got rid of those liege lords as well. You also know that the only people from Hong Kong who actually complain are rich business owners upset that they can’t exploit the poor like they could under British rule?

Taiwan was been a nationalist hold out ruled under a military dictatorship for most of its existence. Their leadership does not represent the will of the Chinese people, they are literally just a US puppet.

They will reintegrate with the mainland peacefully, despite western attempts to stir up a regional war. All the US can offer is blood and subjugation under capital. China offers progress and peace.

wewbull , to unitedkingdom in How a hybrid war with China could hurt UK consumers

“Won’t somebody think of the consumers?!?!”

echodot ,

I don’t think the vast majority of people pulled in the UK would support China invading Taiwan so it’s weird that they’re framing it like this, as if that’s the only way that anyone would care.

Oneeightnine , to unitedkingdom in Pensioners will need £8,000 more than last year to have a modest retirement

The thought of even having a pension worth £14k a year seems so far fetched to me. Guess I’ll just drop my hours from 45 to 39?

Yup, my pension contribution is about £5k a year and I feel damn lucky to have that!

Imagine having a final salary pension and than allowing it to be voted away for future generations!

WatTyler , to unitedkingdom in Sunak attacks Starmer on trans rights as Brianna Ghey’s mother visits Parliament

Yet another moment in British politics that has flooded me with anger and upset, followed by despair that there’s nothing I can do to rid us of malevolent, hateful bigots like Rishi Sunak.

JoBo ,

It’s not even like he was caught unawares doing his usual schtick without realising Ms Ghey was present. Not that it would be OK anyway. But Starmer literally introduced her at the start of PMQs. Grotesque. Absolutely grotesque.

WatTyler ,

For Brianna’s mother’s sake, I’m relieved that Sunak used the correct pronouns when he spoke about Brianna at the end. However, what does it say about Sunak and this bullshit, culture war transphobia that he did use the correct pronouns for Brianna?

The whole thrust of the attack was to imply that Starmer doesn’t know what a woman is but then when it’s convenient, Sunak tacitly agrees with Starmer that Brianna was a woman.

I’d almost have more sympathy for Sunak if I thought he was a misinformed transphobe. I resent him more because I don’t believe he genuinely cares, like some do. I have never had any reason to believe he thinks there is any problem with trans people. Yet, he is willing to endanger the lives of these beleaguered, threatened innocent people, for what? For the fucking Conservative and Unionist party. A reprehensible institution that has done infinitely more damage in the real world than any trans person has caused in the most batshit, unhinged nightmares of a Mail Online commenter.

mannycalavera , to unitedkingdom in Inflation set to rise back above 2% Bank of England target this week
@mannycalavera@feddit.uk avatar

Not unexpected it would seem, but also probably a reason why the election was rushed through. Inflation down to 2% is a better slogan than down to 2.3%, or 2.75%

The major reason for this is that inflation is measured based on the growth in prices over the past year, so a large part of the figure is based on what prices were 12 months ago.

In April, the energy price cap – the maximum most households pay for each unit of gas or electricity used – was cut by the regulator Ofgem. In April 2023, the amount people were paying for their energy was at the highest level on record, but the cap fell in July 2023.

So while energy prices deflated dramatically in the 12 months leading up to April to June 2024, dragging the headline inflation figure down, the deflation is less dramatic in July.

And also

It predicted at the beginning of August that inflation will rise to 2.75 per cent by the end of 2024 and stay high for the foreseeable future before dropping to below 2 per cent again in the summer of 2026

Very interesting analysis. Thanks 👍.

wewbull ,

That all suggests that everything apart from energy is still inflating really quickly.

mannycalavera ,
@mannycalavera@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah it’s higher than energy, correct. But not stupidly high.

Forecasters expect core CPI, which excludes energy and food prices, to stay at around 3.5 per cent and services CPI, which measures items such as rail tickets and hospitality costs, to drop a little, with Deutsche Bank and Pantheon Macroeconomics saying it could go from 5.7 to 5.5 per cent.

“Positive base effects, mainly from energy prices, will likely push headline inflation higher through the second half of 2024. But there is good news. Services inflation, we expect, should continue its descent – albeit gradually,” said Sanjay Raja of Deutsche Bank Research.

wewbull ,

Excluding energy AND food takes away the area I’ve personally perceived as rising. Food.

tal ,
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

really quickly

Unless there are some factors that I am not aware of affecting the UK, I don’t think that inflation will reach particularly high levels – like, of the COVID-19 sort – in the near future. And inflation normally does bounce around a bit.

Luvs2Spuj , to unitedkingdom in Two in five not saving enough in pension for even basic retirement

I don’t expect to reach retirement age as it will keep increasing. If I do make it that far, I expect having to work so long to get there that I will be pretty much a husk of a human.

That isn’t to say I’m not paying into one, but I probably am in the ‘not adequately saving’ group because I want to enjoy the time I have now as best I can.

The future is terrifying and causes a lot of anxiety…

Edit: also wasn’t the state pension supposed to cover a basic retirement!? Fuck.

I’ll take garden variety disagreements about economic policies over power seizure any day of the week. Compromise and not getting all the things you want is a hallmark of a healthy democracy.

This is how low the bar is and I lay 100% blame on authoritarians more interested in grabbing power than compromising themselves.

Democracy is when everything sucks and gets worse every year while centrists keep eyeing Nazis as possible better allies than the left.

If you force the government to improve society in any what you’re an “authoritarian” (oooh, how scary. btw, I’m pretty sure “authoritarian” as a cudgel against the left that equates them to the right is against board rules).

FuckyWucky , (edited ) to worldnews in The French left faces a reality check over 90% wealth tax and lavish spending

“The most immediate risk is a financial crisis and France’s economic decline,” he said. “The application of the New Popular Front’s disruptive programme would destroy the results of the policies that we have pursued for seven years … This project is exorbitant, ineffective and dated. Its legitimacy is weak and circumstantial. It must not be applied.”

“Several economic and fiscal measures put forward by the New Popular Front are either unconstitutional or against EU rules, so very legally challenging.

A wealth tax doesn’t have much impact on real production. It is money hoarded and not being used for anything. I have doubts on its efficacy since France is in the EU and the capital flows are open, they have no control over the Euro. Which is why they’ll likely need to leave the Eurozone before doing anything ‘radical’.

With the capitalist pulling money out of France and taxes staying uncollected, the only way for them to fund their new welfare plans is with bond issuance (assuming the markets still want French Euro bonds). which EU rules limit to 3%, so not possible at all.

Remember what they did to Greece

Dolores ,
@Dolores@hexbear.net avatar

can they really leverage something like Greece on the second economy of the EU? and how well can capital actually avoid tax while staying within the benefits of the EU? if it were elementary to cart off to a more friendly EU country wouldn’t EU firms be swirling between memberstates after like every election?
