Surely this can’t be accurate…right?

Masimatutu OP , (edited )

Here’s the article: metro.co.uk/…/a-toddler-has-now-shot-someone-ever…

Edit: yes, the headline is misleading. The article only claimed there had been at least as many toddler shootings as weeks for two consecutive years.

LetterboxPancake ,

No I don’t think they are. They lack the strength to aim properly and they can’t take the recoil. But at close range? It’s enough for sure.

Changetheview ,

Shockingly, it is accurate as long as you consider age 3 and under a toddler. I also don’t think they’re literally tracking it by day but rather just more than 52/year. No matter the pedantic concerns, the deaths from guns in the US is sickening.

The evidence for this article was even investigated by Snopes and found to be true. They framed it as “more toddlers kill in the US than foreign terrorists.” This was all from 2015/2016. And it’s only gotten worse since then. snopes.com/…/toddlers-killed-americans-terrorists…

Gun deaths in the US are astronomical. In 2021, 184 deaths by guns from children 5 and under. More than 3 per week. From kids under 5 alone. This is a good read about gun violence in US children overall: pewresearch.org/…/gun-deaths-among-us-kids-rose-5…

Damn near 50,000 US gun deaths overall in 2021. That is more than 130 people PER DAY. Just utterly depressing. And leaders still fail to bring about any significant change. pewresearch.org/…/what-the-data-says-about-gun-de…

unoriginalsin ,

How am I supposed to be expected to defend myself from these killer toddlers if I’m unable to carry my AR into the Piggly Wiggly?

PowerCrazy ,

Well when the leaders see things like this and their go to is to yell about “assault rifles” and then provide unlimited funding for military contractors who are the people who build “assault rifles” it’s not really a surprise that the problem continues. If a congress person mentions “assault weapons” they should never be voted for again, because they clearly do not understand the problem.

Okay then how come the internet isn’t wired up globally. 2023 and there are still places without

slazer2au ,

As with everything it is because of money.

From a business point of view why should I spend $1,000 per quarter mile to install a fibre cable that will make maybe $120/month in revenue so my profit per service is maybe $30-$40/m

This is a vastly oversimplified as there are multiplexing technologies like GPON to lower the cost per mile but then there are support costs for faults, backhaul and internet exchange point costs I have to pay.

buzz86us ,

Then why do they feel right to complain?

slazer2au ,

Because when a company is not making enough money it is not the fault of sales not meeting expectations, it is the fault of government regulations and administration costs.

Trainguyrom ,

We did it with electricity and telephone service about 100-200 years ago depending on where you look. We can do it again with a technology that literally can share cables with telephone and electricity

slazer2au ,

In some EU countries, Australia, new Zealand, and the UK those initial networks were rolled out as government departments so the government did not expect an initial return.

Fun thing, the Australian and UK telephone networks were rolled out under the direction of the postal services before being split off to their own departments.

Since the 80s most western governments are trying to sell off assets under the guise of Privation so we are very unlikely to see another initiative like it. There have been exceptions like the Australian National Broadband Network but those are planned to be broken up and sold again anyway.

Fluffy_Ruffs , to assholedesign in Oil draining over the hot exhaust? Sounds good guys, let's sign it off and start production!

Next time just rotate the bike 90° so the oil drains straight out and misses the exhaust. Problem solved!

4am ,

Yeah my first though as well is the bike is probably supposed to be tipped when draining?

Resistentialism ,

Tipping it over could cause a drop, which could be costly to replace. And if you’re just holding it to one side. You’d need a second person to either hold it, or take the plug out.

Red_October ,

Alternatively redirecting gravity by 90° would also solve the problem, without the difficulty of needing to reposition the bite.

motsu , to assholedesign in Oil draining over the hot exhaust? Sounds good guys, let's sign it off and start production!

Doesn’t help for this (or the next) oil change… But look into a fujimoto drain plug. Its a mini ball valve that is spring loaded (so you have to press the leaver up before you can turn it… Also has a 2nd safety in the form of a plastic clip that prevents it from being pressed up). Makes oil changes so easy. For your bike, it might still be too recessed, but the valve has a hose barb on it too so you can direct the oil into the drain pan

quinkin ,

Fumoto, but yes.

CADmonkey ,

I like the fumoto valves for another reason - if tou have an aluminum oil pan, the valve will keep you from wearing out the threads.

thepianistfroggollum ,

I like not having to have to use a jack to get enough clearance to use a wrench.

thepianistfroggollum ,

I’m 100% buying another fumoto valve when my free oil change plan is up. I never even had to jack up my old car to change its oil.

My one complaint was that without seeing the valve, it’s super hard to remember which way you push and which way to turn. Not fun to figure out when your oil is at highway temps and you’re fumbling around between hot parts with a glove that’s getting hotter and hotter.

But that’s mostly because I’m stubborn.

Lilnino , to mildlyinteresting in A very useful guide to buying gelato from a Italian local

I’m not sure she’s correct about milk melting faster than cream or that the “deflates” if you whip too much air into it.

One of the three main differences between the ice cream and gelato is air content. ice cream has more air and doesn’t loose it over night; it would be bubbly too with all the air escaping. Gelato melts quicker because it is served 10 to 15 degrees F warmer than ice cream (this main differences).

Low air content and warmer temp is why gelato is smoother.

Source: My Italian wife and I have had long discussions and Internet searches on the finer points of this topic. I’m not an expert, I could be wrong.
