I can’t seem to read the article, so forgive me if they answer this question, but how would a gun work in space? Most firearms I’m familiar with use oxidation reactions to propel ammunition. Were the shells filled with self-oxidizing propellant, or did they just use a completely different system?

An_Zombie ,

Fun fact! All gunpowder is self oxidizing

OptimusPhillip ,
@OptimusPhillip@lemmy.world avatar

I guess today is a learning day for all of us! I knew gunpowder contained nitrates, but I didn’t realize that was its purpose, or that it allowed it to work in a vacuum.

general_kitten ,

basically all explosives are fuel combined with it’s own oxidizer

Cethin ,

Pretty much anything explosive need to be self oxidizing. If air can’t get in to continue to feed the burning of the material (which never can during an explosion) than the oxygen needs to come from another source.

superkret ,

Firearms generally work in space at least once.
A semi-auto probably won’t cycle correctly in zero G, and any gun will likely overheat from the first couple shots in a vacuum, but you can always get one shot out.

I loved QuickBASIC. I’d write Assembly Language routines in Turbo Assembler and call them from QuickBASIC.

I wrote a DeskMate clone for fun and it was actually pretty decent; TASM gave it decent performance.

I tried writing an “operating system” in QBasic. Yes, I was that ignorant and optimistic at the same time. I still have the code. Standard VESA driver, high resolutions. Wrote my own terrible scripting language. But it was fun doing that. These days I rarely find any programming fun. It’s all tedious and dealing with middleware issues.

I went to watch this movie last weekend. I like movies but I’m not an expert or anything, and I don’t have the best taste so take my opinion with a grain of salt. We went because my wife wanted to watch it.

I liked it. I have to confess that I expected less, but it was funny, it was entertaining, I think there was a jump scare that got me but overall, while it doesn’t feel like a proper horror movie, the “scary” scenes don’t feel silly.

I liked the characters dynamic and LaKeith Stanfield is definitely a great actor, even here where the material doesn’t require too much acting, he definitely elevates the film. He’s the straight man and even then, he stands out among the rest of the quirky characters.

The only moment I felt like something was missing or wasn’t very well done was the scene where

spoilerLaKeith’s character is trying to convince the child to not go to “his father”. I felt like we got a couple of scenes of them together where convincing him is believable, but nothing that was said seemed to me enough to actually convince him. We know that it’s not his father but the child doesn’t and LaKeith never says that, we know that if the kid goes there he’ll die and the bad guy will take his soul but the child doesn’t know that and LaKeith doesn’t say it, we know LaKeith cares a lot for the child and his mom (that’s why we have those previous scenes) but, again, he doesn’t say that. He just convinces the kid by being persistent on saying “you have to come with me”.

I don’t know if it’s actually a big problem but I remember thinking about that scene while I was actually watching the movie. Just a small and maybe ridiculous complaint I wanted to get off my chest.

After the cinema my wife was really excited explaining to me the lore and the references, so I think it’s a better experience if you’re familiar with the ride and the previous movies, but it’s still a fun movie to watch.

I’m not a fan of the Turtles but I do like them. I went to see this because my youngest had obviously got wind of it on YouTube and something about it grabbed him.

For a bit of perspective, I enjoyed the 90s cartoon, the first live action film (I love the animatronics) and the CGI film TMNT.

Mutant Mayhem was a brilliant film, even if your not a die hard fan. I love the colourful art style as well which was so fresh and different from anything else. It’s probably going to be a 4K release for me, that art needs to be appreciated.

The story went in a direction I wasn’t expecting and I loved Jackie Chan as Splinter. His fight scene involving an office chair was very Chan in style.

Of course there’s a mid credit tease and considering they were a character I was expecting to see all through the film, I hope we get a sequel.

Espi , to linux in NTFS turns 30 years old today! I hear it's still in use by some crufty old legacy operating systems 😁

I can't believe Microsoft is still using this piece of crap filesystem. If they had a CoW filesystem they could even paper over the mess that is Windows Update without having to actually fix it, they could save petabytes of storage over the world and significantly improve reliability all in one go. Let's not even mention how NTFS is amazingly slow on hard drives, manages to fragment to hell and back without doing anything, requires offline repairs like it was FAT32 and its compression barely does anything while massively slowing down the computer.

Yet here I am envying btrfs, APFS, ZFS and even fucking XFS for their reflinks and CoW.

In fact, not even WSL uses a modern FS, I think Microsoft is allergic to modern FSs.

beefcat ,
@beefcat@kbin.social avatar

None of these problems are really dealbreakers for a consumer-oriented file system in 2023. Not even ext4 supports CoW. Now that everyone boots off an SSD, things like file fragmentation no longer matter, and most of NTFS' continued slowness has more to do with Windows itself than the actual file system.

ReFS is Microsoft's new file system meant for more advanced use cases. It supports many but not all of these advanced features. Starting with Windows 11, you can actually boot off a ReFS drive, though I'm not sure that is a recommended configuration.

RunningInRVA , to technology in NTFS turns 30 years old today! I hear it's still in use by some crufty old legacy operating systems 😁

Does NTFS allow for merging of disks into a single partition? Apple was able to do this by combing a larger HDD with a smaller SSD into a single virtual HFS+ volume.

d3Xt3r ,

Yep. You need to convert the disk into a “dynamic disk” (no data loss btw) and then you can create a “spanned volume” across the disks. You can also create a striped volume for performance, which is basically RAID 0.

But apparently dynamic disks are now deprecated and Microsoft wants you to use “storage spaces” instead, which is basically RAID and not just simple spanned volumes. The problem with this, IIRC, is that you’ll need at least two extra drives (in addition to the drive where Windows is installed).

Spotlight7573 ,

I don’t think a spanned volume is quite what they were after. I’m pretty sure macOS uses the SSD part as a cache and it’s used mainly for increasing the performance of the relatively slow but large capacity HDD. Nowadays though you might as well just go with all SSD in most cases if performance matters.

nicman24 ,

can you boot from that ?
