This isn’t happening it’s just grandstanding before the summit. Sweden said they’ll put in a good word for Turkey to join the EU, Erdogan said he’ll put in a good word to Turkish parliament. After the conference someone will do something trivial and they’ll fake outrage and go back to Sweden not joining.

MagicShel , to news in Venezuela election: Maduro declared winner in disputed vote

That is wildly incongruent with the exit polling that showed Maduro losing by over a 2:1 margin.

memfree OP ,

Yeah, not only did they prevent the actual opposition leader from running, they’ve really made the vote count look suspicious. From APnews :

The official results came as a shock to opposition members who had celebrated, online and outside a few voting centers, what they believed was a landslide victory for González.

“I’m so happy,” said Merling Fernández, a 31-year-old bank employee, as a representative for the opposition campaign walked out of one voting center in a working class neighborhood of Caracas to announce results showing González more than doubled Maduro’s vote count. Dozens standing nearby erupted in an impromptu rendition of the national anthem.

Authorities delayed releasing the results from each of the 30,000 polling booths nationwide, promising only to do so in the “coming hours,” hampering attempts to verify the results.

After finally claiming to have won, Maduro accused unidentified foreign enemies of trying to hack the voting system.

MagicShel , (edited )

I don’t really know anything about the situation there. I don’t know if you know the answers but I have questions.

Realistically, is there any hope for democracy to prevail? What is the likelihood the military would step in? Not that military coups are a good thing, either. It sounds like people are more keen to escape than to rise up.

Edit: assuming the exit polls aren’t the thing being manipulated.

The_Che_Banana ,

No chance since Chavez took power. My wife was part of Amnesty International cou ti g bodies during his first couple attemp, before he was released from jail and won his first election.

And thats why you don’t vote for populist dictator wannabes, because this is what you get.

Andrzej ,

Not saying that nothing fishy has gone down, but that ‘exit poll’ was conducted by the opposition, and that margin seems ridiculous considering the crowds that Maduro has been drawing

MagicShel ,

Right. Great point. I had that in the back of my head but forgot to mention it.

memfree OP ,

That particular exit poll APnews was reporting on was just for one polling place, so it doesn’t mean much, but yes, it was an opposition campaigner.

That said, we shouldn’t have to speculate. All the votes should be available for review – at least for voting centers where the results are in dispute.

On the other hand, we’ve been seeing that ‘big money’ wants the opposition to win because Maria Machado (the opposition leader who was kept off the ballot) “—derided by the Chavista leadership for her pro-market views and her upper-class background” —has promised pro-business changes.

Andrzej ,

For ‘pro-business’ read ‘swingeing privatisation’ but yeah the whole thing is a mess, and I’m not sure it’s possible to have ‘free and fair’ (whatever that means) elections under such conditions.

Wrt reasons to doubt the result, electronic vote counting/voting machines are reason enough imho — but that throws a load of other democracies into question 🤷

memfree OP ,

IMO, all voting should be on paper so that a hand recount can be done if the machines are questioned.

Andrzej ,

Yes I agree 100%. There’s no other way to do it.

This is why I blocked lemmy.ml, along with hexbear.net and lemmygrad.ml - too bad those user blocks are so ineffective and still show every comment from every user from there.

wizardbeard ,

Blocking the instance is not blocking the users of that instance. Confusing, but it’s separate functionality. Instance blocking blocks all posts from the instance showing up in your feeds. Doesn’t block comments or users, you still have to do that individually.

Probably should be renamed as an option, because logically you would think it would block everything from that instance, not just posts/communities.

OpenStars ,
@OpenStars@discuss.online avatar

Right, you basically cannot block all comments from those instances. Though it does prevent notifications if they reply to you. The only way to avoid wasting your time with them is to block each and every single person that comes along, including every single new one. Which also does nothing to stop them from downvoting you. In short, unless an entire instance defederates from them and you join it - which none of the well-known instances do, and it is not entirely so trivial to spin up your own - there is nothing that an individual user can do about the situation, atm.

And sometimes I even have enjoyable conversations with people on those instances - still, those are in the extreme minority (fewer than 1/1000) and I would choose to sacrifice that to have the option to walk away entirely, if I could. Especially since I could always have an alt account elsewhere to get the best of both worlds. As they also do in turn (several have openly admitted this), to get around the instance defederations.

tal , (edited ) to technology in Elon Musk's SpaceX contracted to destroy retired space station - BBC News
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

IIRC Russia was talking about detaching their modules and using them to help bootstrap some new station. So I dunno if those will get brought down.

That being said, that was also when that rather pugnacious guy was running Roscosmos, and I dunno if doing a new space station is the top of Russia’s priority list for their limited budget.

kagis

Dmitry Rogozin.

kagis further

It looks like they canceled the idea of reusing the Russian ISS modules back in 2021. So I guess those are destined for SpaceX’s deorbit too.

en.wikipedia.org/…/Orbital_Piloted_Assembly_and_E…

The Orbital Piloted Assembly and Experiment Complex (Russian: Орбитальный Пилотируемый Сборочно-Экспериментальный Комплекс, Orbital’nyj Pilotirujemyj Sborochno-Eksperimental’nyj Kompleks;[1][2] ОПСЭК, OPSEK) was a 2009–2017 proposed third-generation Russian modular space station for low Earth orbit. The concept was to use OPSEK to assemble components of crewed interplanetary spacecraft destined for the Moon, Mars, and possibly Saturn. The returning crew could also recover on the station before landing on Earth. Thus, OPSEK could form part of a future network of stations supporting crewed exploration of the Solar System.

In early plans, the station was to consist initially of several modules from the Russian Orbital Segment (ROS) of the International Space Station (ISS). However, after studying the feasibility of this, the head of Roscosmos stated in September 2017 the intention to continue working together on the ISS.[3] In April 2021, Roscosmos officials announced plans to exit from the ISS programme after 2024, stating concerns about the condition of its aging modules. The OPSEK concept had by then evolved into plans for the Russian Orbital Service Station (ROSS), which would be built without modules from the ISS, and was anticipated to be launched starting in the mid-2020s.[4][5]

en.wikipedia.org/…/Russian_Orbital_Service_Statio…

The Russian Orbital Service Station (Russian: Российская орбитальная служебная станция, Rossiyskaya orbital’naya sluzhebnaya stantsiya) (ROSS, Russian: РОСС)[3] is a proposed Russian orbital space station scheduled to begin construction in 2027. Initially an evolution of the Orbital Piloted Assembly and Experiment Complex (OPSEK) concept, ROSS developed into plans for a new standalone Russian space station built from scratch without modules from the Russian Orbital Segment of the ISS.[4]

I still dunno if they’re gonna get the money for a new space station. Like, deciding to have a war in Ukraine may have kind of killed off the viability of doing a new space station.

zhunk ,

There’s no way Russia builds a new station. The timeline for them getting Nauka to orbit basically proves that it’s impossible. They’ve been trying to buddy up with China to visit theirs, though.
