Could also be mineral oil wicking up the cable, there are the absolute madmen who opt for oil immersion cooling their rig

zacher_glachl ,

Agreed, the only argument for oil immersion cooling is, AFAIK, better energy efficiency which is of course not a real consideration for high end consumer grade hardware. A previous iteration of our national compute cluster was oil immersion cooled but the tradeoffs in maintainability etc. were not even close to sensible so the next iteration went back to regular server racks. And the iteration after that needed the floor space and finally dialed in the end of oily door handles and eerily quiet but oppressively hot server rooms.

zacher_glachl ,

As you freely admit you have no money and seem to have no specific qualifications.

Even with those boxes checked I would never ever consider moving across country without a signed employment contract at the target location. The risks seem insane and completely outsized to me. But if you’re a way, way more adventurous type than me, at the very least you’d need enough savings to keep you off the streets for a few months if you are planning to start job hunting only after moving. Anything less would just be stupid.

zacher_glachl ,

Or, it could be that there’s like 300x more non-Aussies than Aussies so constraining the ability of foreigners to speculate on Australian real estate could be seen as a priority by an institution who’s literal job it is to serve the Australian people, first and foremost.

zacher_glachl ,

Good. I hope there are further tests of the applicants’ world view in place, but that’s a start.

zacher_glachl , (edited )

I did specify world view, did I not? A credible commitment to the rule of law, democracy, secular politics, and to the rules-based international order would be a start. I don’t think we should award citizenship to anyone who can’t even make lip service to these principles.

edit: smart selection process on the part of that German state actually. Screening out people who would deny Israel the right to exist probably also catches a lot of those who would fail some of the above requirements.

zacher_glachl ,

Not for much longer.

zacher_glachl ,

I wouldn’t know, haven’t seen an ad on youtube in like 10 years.

zacher_glachl ,

On lemmy.ml at least, there’s a very good reason cause the admins are authoritarians. Can’t even say “bitch” without it getting removed.

zacher_glachl ,

There are plenty of people who are completely comfortable with their partners being strippers or porn stars.

From a purely logical standpoint, given the number of strippers and porn stars out there, that statement must be true. It’s not quite something I can wrap my head around though.

zacher_glachl ,

As a python developer and user of websites, please no. The web is already a slow mess and my laptop is already spinning up fans on some websites that really shouldn’t do anything much more complicated than load text and images from a database and display them. CPython would make it exponentially worse. At least pick a sensible performance focused implementation.

can I be a Free Software advocate but still use non-free software??

I’m asking this because one time, while browsing the GNU website, I noticed that some of the members’ emails had “gmail” on them!! And I asked myself how would that be possible?? And I think other members of the FSF had Gmail too. Why? Richard Stallman is against Gmail, so why would those memberse use it?? Would that...

zacher_glachl ,

I mean, ever tried hosting your own email server in ${CURRENT_YEAR}? Might as well write those mails to a thumb drive and throw it out of the window.

zacher_glachl ,

Unless you jump through a crazy number of hoops, your domain just gets blacklisted by every spam filter under the sun.

Arch user should be an aeropress: people can’t seem to shut the hell up about how great it supposedly is

zacher_glachl ,

As you say, 25 is not old at all. As long as you keep socializing with friends and coworkers, pursue IRL hobbies ideally social ones, etc. as you mention, I don’t think it matters much if it takes you 6 months or >5 years to reach your fitness goals.

The only people I’d consider “”“lost cases”“” I know personally are shut-ins who have long mentally parted ways with baseline humanity. An inability to have a decent conversation with people is harder to fix than being overweight and becomes more of a problem with each year of age. But you seem to be on the right track there!

zacher_glachl ,

I’d probably ask for a much better metagenome assembler and binner. there’s enough groundwork and data out there with exponentially more created each year. If an AGI could compress the 20 or so PhD student-years needed to really leverage that into something outstanding into a few hours that would be really nice.

If cannabis gets rescheduled to III, how can it ever get the state - federal differences resolved when it comes to the recreational market?

The feds will still go after it as an illegal drug when presented as recreational and the will keep the stigma going on forever. Furthermore it will keep a lot of talented people out of good job opportunities for smoking a joint after work instead of having a glass of wine.

zacher_glachl ,

A better job at what, getting you high? Pretty sure they already have that, and while it doesn’t net them 10k per dose the Sacklers would have liked that very much no doubt.

zacher_glachl ,

I can (and do) just read the ~/ssh/.config file if needed, it’s quite legible. In most cases however zsh autocompletion does all the heavy lifting for me (ssh ser(tab) -> ssh servername).

Still a cool idea for a script, and if it works well for you more power to you, just saying there’s more ergonomic and universally applicable solutions. (Only mentioning this since you said “I couldn’t find a decent solution to this problem”).

You gotta be able to acknowledge and discuss this stuff.

If the only way to advocate for climate action is to also try and turn people into pacifist commies, we can just stop trying.

edit: the laughable failure to understand basic human psychology in this thread, lmao

Cigarette-style climate warnings on food could cut meat consumption, study suggests (www.theguardian.com)

People are used to seeing stark warnings on tobacco products alerting them about the potentially deadly risks to health. Now a study suggests similar labelling on food could help them make wiser choices about not just their health, but the health of the planet....

zacher_glachl , (edited )

I wonder who is your target audience for posts like this. People who made the choice to eat meat on the basis of rational deliberation but are missing some key facts?

Pretty much everyone hopefully knows that meat is not great for the environment, is more wasteful to produce simply due to thermodynamics, that red meat is not very healthy, and that the ethics of eating meat are pretty clear cut.

We just don’t care cause it’s tasty as fuck. No amount of facts and sound ethical arguments will make a steak not taste amazing.

edit: for what it’s worth, I don’t care if they put warnings on meat. Doesn’t make it any less tasty.

zacher_glachl ,

I take selfish and nihilistic but not sadistic. I don’t enjoy the fact that animals suffer for my enjoyment. It just doesn’t bother me all that much. It’s just part of life.

Literally who gives a shit about Twitter at this point.

anyone willing to walk a noob through getting some services running?

I’ve tried to figure some of this stuff out but I really don’t know what I’m doing. Most documentation is written with a vocabulary I don’t understand. Tutorials assume a high-level understanding of coding, software, CLI and a bunch of other stuff....

why linux will never be a viable solution on the desktop

Has been pretty viable for me for the last 7 years or so.

why self hosting will never take off

Literally who cares, the community stands to gain nothing from another few million novice users who don’t even know or care to learn how to formulate a question or usable bug report.

zacher_glachl ,

According to estimates, PV including battery storage will be the cheapest energy source to develop for nearly every country in the world by the 2030s. Surely even the most determined doomsayers won’t go so far as to say we’ll “kill the planet” until then.

zacher_glachl , (edited )

The more pessimistic (already prior to this report unlikely!) projections of climate change are conditional on sustained heavy investment and development of fossil energy sources, which seems to me would make little sense if the alternative is significantly cheaper. So there’s now an even lower chance we’re in one of those truly apocalyptic timelines.

zacher_glachl ,

I was recently on holiday where most of the other guests in our hotel were 50-70 year old Germans.

The breakfast buffet at our hotel had a large scale coffee maker which could do some surprisingly good freshly ground coffee. What it could also do is spit instant coffee into your mug and pour hot water on top.

In two weeks I never saw someone (other than me) draw anything but fucking instant coffee from that thing.

If only I knew…

The same way I deal with morning sleepiness. A quadruple espresso.

and an industry grade internet connection if you plan on sharing your library with a few friends. Otherwise, fully agreed

edit: if you have mostly full HD stuff it might be pretty feasible with regular internet

zacher_glachl ,

Agreed, as long as you handle the HTTPS or VPN setup, and set up any automatic media downloading ( jellyseer, sonarr and radarr and jackett) the end product is certifiably wife approved and works nicely out of the box

I have a Chromecast Ultra connected by ethernet to my network. There’s an android app with a cast functionality which we both use with our respective accounts. I also hear good things about the Android TV and roku clients (but have neither myself)

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine made me realize the fundamental wisdom of the saying “Speak softly and carry a big stick”.

Did we kill Linux's killer feature?

A few years ago we were able to upgrade everything (OS and Apps) using a single command. I remember this was something we boasted about when talking to Windows and Mac fans. It was such an amazing feature. Something that users of proprietary systems hadn’t even heard about. We had this on desktops before things like Apple’s...

No need to overcomplicate things, just write a small shell script or even just an alias. I use this daily:

alias get-rekt=“sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y && sudo apt autoremove -y && flatpak update -y && flatpak remove --unused --delete-data -y”

adjust accordingly for Fedora and/or snaps. Obviously doesn’t work for appimages or manually compiled stuff which should be a last resort if there’s no other sensible way to install stuff. Append any other package managers you care about.

edit: voyager shat the bed with the code block but you get the point

zacher_glachl ,

How is that a complicated alias? Seems pretty straightforward to me. But again, if you prefer a shell script which does the same thing but separated line by line, also fine

Do you pirate? And do you justify pirating? i.e., what is your piracy philosophy?

Well, my friend, he’s kinda poor he can’t afford some books and some streaming services, so he pirates. He pirate books, audiobook and videos and other stuff. Sometimes he buys books he likes a lot out of loyalty to the author (yeah, I don’t understand it either), he likes to read physical books, but yeah, if he hates the...

zacher_glachl ,

My justification: nobody has stopped me yet🤷

zacher_glachl ,

Yeah, RIP German piracy community. Always a huge PITA to find German movies online. I wasn’t aware one company is driving most of those lawsuits though, what a wild story. Can’t fault them for finding a great business model though

zacher_glachl ,

Depends on your needs. If you expect to grow fast and unpredictably, or have extreme burst workloads (at my company it fluctuates between requiring ~10 cpus to ~50,000, and between 0 GPUs and dozens) or if you need several complex types of services and no people at hand who can manage them, it can be way cheaper. If you just need a few servers, a tape backup and a database, actual hardware has always been cheaper.

zacher_glachl ,

Do you really wanna make a species close to self annihilation multiplanetary though? It’s probably pretty easy to nudge a few asteroids the wrong way given the right drive technology…so not sure space colonies would change the likelihood of doom.

zacher_glachl ,

Great question which is not at all a promotion!

TIL it’s now illegal to be a racist twat in private.

Remote or hybrid workers, would you rather work a 4 day week on site, or WFH completely for 5 days a week, for the same pay?

I know this will vary a lot, so hypothetically let’s say you currently WFH/work remotely at least 3 days a week. Your commute to work takes an hour max (door to door) each way. If you were given the choice of a 4 day week working onsite, or a 5 day week WFH (or as many days as you’d like) for the same pay, which would you...

zacher_glachl , (edited )

I have a 25 min commute by subway and I enjoy banter with my colleagues. Due to covid I also know that I devolve into a troglodyte on full WFH so

zacher_glachl ,

Not if I have good reason to believe I won’t get another one like the old any time soon.

zacher_glachl ,

I don’t think a civilization which would destroy their home with the single-minded goal of spreading throughout the universe in the blink of an eye should be allowed to spread beyond their local star system at all. Maybe re-evaluate after giving them a few centuries to mature.
