Apple iPhone 16 Pro tipped to feature a glossy titanium frame (lemdro.id)

Apple launched the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max with titanium frames with brushed finish. According to a new rumor, the iPhone 16 Pro duo will keep the titanium body but will move to a more polished glossy frame. https://lemdro.id/pictrs/image/de80a8e4-b37a-4036-8e4d-51d8897fc74e.jpeg...

I think they really nailed the natural titanium colour. Looking forward to the new colours in September.

The actual total two-way communication distance between Zhang and his patient was more than 20,000km, a considerable challenge since longer distances can cause more latency, or delay, between the surgeon’s console in one location, and the response of the robotic arms at the other location.

In this case, China’s 5G telecommunication network helped to lower the delay to a 135 millisecond latency, less that the 200 millisecond latency that various studies have identified as ideal for telesurgery.

I never would have guessed Cyber Surgeon could be on the Work From Home bingo card.

Some company heads hoped return-to-office mandates would make people quit, survey says (arstechnica.com)

Nearly two in five (37 percent) managers, directors, and executives believe their organization enacted layoffs in the last year because fewer employees than they expected quit during their RTO. And their beliefs are well-founded: One in four (25 percent) VP and C-suite executives and one in five (18 percent) HR pros admit they...

fediverse platform for a schools community network

I am looking to host a fediverse platform for a community of non-tech people. These people use mostly ig and some still fb. These people are from a network of schools which are ideologically aligned with libre software and decentralisation. It will include adults and also teenagers, who mostly use IG. This is part of a plan of a...

Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, again (www.engadget.com)

Spotify is officially raising its Premium subscription rates in the US come July, following reports of the move in April. The platform is increasing its Individual plan from $11 to $12 monthly and its Duo plan from $15 to $17 monthly — the same jump as last year’s $1 and $2 price hikes, respectively. However, its Family plan...

So, it’s clear that a small subpopulation is preferentially tweeting links to sources of misinformation, and for many users, they’re the most significant source of exposure to these sites. So who are these people?

They’re a bit more likely to be female. While both the comparison groups were roughly evenly split between male and female, the superspreaders were 60 percent female. They’re also older, on average 58 years old, nearly 20 years older than the sample as a whole. And, while much of the misinformation about the election largely circulated within Republican circles, only 64 percent of the superspreaders were registered Republicans (nearly 20 percent were registered as Democrats).

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

as reported in Vietnam.net, it’s possible Steam has been taken down in Vietnam after local game developers complained about the scope and size of Steam’s vast portfolio of games, claiming Vietnamese devs cannot compete with Steam’s releases given they are subject to government approval and thousands of international games on Steam are not.

Citing it as “an injustice to domestic publishers”, Vietnamese studios reportedly say that local game development “will die” if Steam is able to keep releasing games without the same government scrutiny as domestic games.

The sources, however, claimed that Android-based smartphones, mostly those from Samsung Electronics, will be exempted from the ban, while the document explicitly states that “bringing in iPhones will be completely prohibited”.

The reason is purportedly because iPhones do not fully comply with the restrictions outlined by the National Defence Mobile Security, a mobile device management application operated by the military authorities.

For instance, when activating the security app, it begins to restrict several smartphone functions, including the camera, Wi-Fi, tethering, USB functions and the microphone.

According to this analysis—and, I have to warn you, it’s kinda funny—liberals and conservatives have markedly different facial morphology. Liberals have “smaller lower faces” and “lips and noses [that] are shifted downward,” and chins that “are smaller” than conservatives, researchers write. Researchers repeat the key conclusion later on: “liberals tended to have smaller faces.”

So, according to this theory, if you have a tiny face, you’re probably a progressive. Or, by contrast, if you have a big fat face, there’s a good chance you might be a Trump voter.

The film is “set decades before the original 2009 Star Trek film.” Toby Haynes (Andor, Black Mirror “USS Callister”) is directing based on a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith (The Lego Batman Movie), with J.J. Abrams returning as producer.

[…] the origin story movie is set to start filming by the end of the year. There are no details yet on the plot, specific time setting, or cast. If Paramount can move fast enough they could get the origin movie into theaters by 2026—in time for Star Trek’s 60th anniversary.

I’d be down for an Andor-styled origin story.
