I remember seeing some chatter about tunneling over XMPP. Most plane wifi allows chat protocols, and it should be possible to encapsulate your traffic as ascii text in XMPP packets. You “just” need to set up the endpoints to do the bridging.

Of I were to do it, I’d run a a script that sets up a tun/tap interface that everything else on my laptop will communicate through. This script also connects to my xmpp server at home. Any data coming in on the tun/tap is encoded to ascii strings and sent as chat messages to my xmpp server. The same script can also do the reverse. At home a similar script does, mirroring that on my laptop. Make sure prerouting is set up accordingly in both ends.

From what I’ve seen on planes, it’s mostly down to captive portals using mac addresses to track clients. In theory it should also be able to sneak through by spoofing hardware addresses of someone who’s paid for the service.

You will get that on airplanes anyways

vettnerk ,

I had forgotten all about that game until your description made uneasy memories of those boss battles awaken.

vettnerk ,

I gave in to the hype and bought BG3. And this is the first time in ages where I’ve bought a brand new AAA game and not been disappointed.

I have a brand new PC, so it’s about time I ran something more demanding than Factorio on it.

vettnerk ,

I know. I have an angelbob megabase save that clocks in at 788MB. To play it I need to add an additional 16GB of swap. I figured that it was about time the GPU did some heavy lifting too.

I’ll let Randall Munroe decide that himself, considering the fact that he provides URLs for hotlinking below the comics

github.com/canboat/canboat

Allows me to interface a PC to a canbus in an efficient manner. I wrote an autopilot in perl using that, but I would like to see the project mature to the point where it is stable enough for production environments.

Why does everyone make such a fuss about privacy?

In the context of VPNs for example. Some VPNs store and provide information about what sites you go to third parties. Third parties analyze it and figure out what adds to show you. Hmm… then let them show me those adds they want to show me. I do hate adds as a whole and use an add blocker, thus. But I couldn’t care less what...

Can you guarantee that everything legal you do now will remain legal next year? In 10 years? In 30? Data storage is cheap…

I have a typical smart people career, and my coworkers are pretty smart too. I therefore like to believe that I’m at least somewhat smart… but there’s too much evidence to the contrary.

Languages in the EU

I’m about to sound like the ignorant American I am, so I apologize in advance! We’re looking at a trip to Germany, and possibly Prague, and we’ve noticed that a lot of the hotel names are French and a couple hotels that aren’t named in French have replied to comments with things like “Bonjour! etc etc” What’s up...

vettnerk ,

I lived there for two years, and I think I met one french speaking expat during that time. Czech is the official language (surprise!), and “everyone” speaks it (apart from yours truly).

One thing I found interesting while living there was that it was usually a safe bet to assume everyone older than me knew russian as a second language, while everyone my age or younger spoke english.

I lived in Brno, which doesn’t have much tourism (just a bunch of expats), but in Prague you’ll have no problem with English, I’m sure.

vettnerk ,

Love it, great job!

If I had to provide points of possible improvement:

  • N connector instead of PL259
  • RG214 cable

I’m sure there’s a joke about Colorado in there somewhere.

EDIT: As you can probably tell, I know fuck all about Colorado. My only point of contact to the state is a coworker who lives there (born and raised, I believe). When asked about whether he’d make it easier for himself and move closer to one of our bases, Quote: “Nah, I like my mountain”. I live in similar terrain, and as such it is my right to shit on others practically living in the middle of nowhere.

I think the biggest thing learned during Iran hostage crisis is that a C130 with rockets pointing everywhere is 100% doable, and should totally be done this time around.

I think the Luka news about hospitalization were true, though. I might be wrong, but IIRC, it was verified by several sources. Presumably he was in the hospital for “normal” reasons, and got better.

vettnerk , (edited )

Valid, but rarely used, as it’s usually just as fast to say “two hundred meters” instead of “two hecto meters”.

However, those prefixes have other (non-SI) uses. A hectare is common way of referring to a 100x100 meter area. And a decare is 10 ares, i.e. 0.1 hectare.

vettnerk ,

Right, forgot about that one.

vettnerk ,

So much this. Chainshot was highly effective at taking down masts and sails, effectively immobilizing the target. If you fired a chainshot towards the mast, chances were really high that each ball would hit 9n each side of the mast, with the chain tearing off the mast itself. And even if you missed and hit only sail, the chain would rip out a huge chunk of sail and any rigging it hit as well.

New guy at my job, polish dude. He seemed decent enough, just a bit… odd… but most of us were; after all, we were the kind of people who are willing to work on ships on the wrong side of the world for weeks, sometimes months at a time.

I trained him to do the job I did, so he could run opposite of my shift, with some assistance from the chief tech and various others. The rest of the crew were pretty experienced, so it made it easier when he needed help with the more complex stuff. He did reasonably OK for a newhire. Nothing spectacularly good, but nothing spectacularly bad either.

Until the crewing department told us he had been arrested back home, multiple counts of murder, and we were unlikely to have him onboard again, so we needed to train his replacement.

Turned out he was a serial killer who killed people for their properties. He’s in prison now, and I’m sure you can google the person. I’m not sure what his actual name was, but we called him Winny. Any poles here who happen to remember the case and could link a news article? This happened roughly 10 years ago.

vettnerk , (edited )

Agree. There’s more to my interpretation of “Monkey Island-like” than being point & click:

  • Cartoonish style <– They seem to have a similar art style, I’ll give them that.
  • Absurd humor
  • Pirate themed
  • Satirical
  • Undead
  • Voodoo

Following the articles logic, I would say that Minecraft or Skyrim is Quake-like, seeing as they’re both first person view.

Further down in the linked article it instead calls it “Monkey Island-inspired” and that’s probably a much better description to have in the title.

Confirming this.

I was in an accident when I was 15, severing the nerves for two of my facial muscles (levator labii superioris and zygomaticus minor, to be specific). I am now 40, and my smile is crooked because of this.

The nerves have healed, as confirmed by various tests, but my brain has simply forgotten how to control these muscles. It’s hard to explain, but on the right side of my face I can control those muscles just fine… I just cannot translate the same action into something for the left side.

It’s not really a disability, so I don’t really care that much, but I have considered asking my doctor if he can send me to a neurologist or something.

True, but now and then, stupid shit by stupid people pays off:

  • "I’m sick of foraging. Imma dive into the water and pry open that thing on the rock down there" -> Oysters
  • "Why the fuck are you burning perfectly good mammoth?" -> BBQ
