Apple has said that 8gb was enough for “general use,” meaning if you use the out-of-the-box applications (Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, etc.) then 8gb is enough for general use to get basic things done. Apple is not going to say how much RAM is required for a third party application to run. That would be impossible. (Especially Chrome).

This article says that the limitation is occurring when running Xcode 16 with code completion. This is outside the definition of general use. Most people who are buying 8gb Macs are not going to be running Xcode at all.

The article and most of these comments are way, way outside the realm of common sense and simply looking for a reason to attack Apple.

If you don’t want to buy Apple, don’t buy it… and in the process, shut the fuck up.

I have a friend who is self-employed. He uses an iPhone and a MacBook Air. He only uses iMessage, Numbers, Safari and Apple Music for entertainment. He gets away with 8gb just fine and rarely has to reboot.

He probably could use a Chromebook or something even lighter, but the support and ecosystem were enough for him to pay the premium. His time is valuable to him so it was worth it to him.

I actually like Apple’s approach to AI more than all of the others. I don’t care for Microsoft’s implementation at all. I just try to avoid Microsoft in general on top of that, so no need to complain about it.

But I do think Apple’s approach to AI from a privacy and implementation perspective is what I would prefer from a software vendor.

It’s really not as bad as people portray. Most sites do work in Safari. There are some problems, but they’ve been pretty good about licking them over time. It’s passable enough that I only have to punt to an alternate browser once in a while.

I’ve tried to use Firefox, I really have. But Firefox absolutely murders my battery and I’m sorry, but they need to do some serious usability improvements… especially around the container implementation and tab management. It’s confusing as fuck (to me).

I’m sure that is the case, however I no longer use chromium browsers due to Google’s behavior and I only use Firefox as a backup. If a site is going to be this egregious to prevent me from reading their content, I am no longer interested in what they have to say.

You can parent your children all day long and everything is just fine at home. As soon as your kids are unleashed into the world of school, it’s anything goes. Facebook will never die. Too many people in third-world countries rely on Facebook for internet access. Facebook is happy to provide free connectivity to keep people hooked in countries like Philippines. They mask the images and videos in FB Messenger, but then provide a very ad-heavy Facebook lite experience for free. They brokered a deal with the carriers in these countries for this. Facebook is here to stay for a very, very long time.

240v dedicated taps don’t come cheap. Having two 240v taps installed this morning, will cost about $1300. That’s without a proprietary charger. I decided to just use standard 240v chargers for our Mach-E. It’s slower than the proprietary Ford charger, but not by much.
